Let's Stop Bullying on WebDip!
Because bullying hurts :(

Bullying is a world wide problem and, yes, you may not believe, but it happens right here on this very forum. What's wrong with bullying you ask? Well, it's wrong and it isn't very nice. Who likes to be called libt*rd just because your soft hearted and you care? Bullying hurts. Heck even the mods get bullied some times.

Let's all agree to put a stop to it whenever and where ever you see bullying. If we all stand up to the bullies, we can win!

I've long been a believer in this: there is no such thing as internet bullying. Now, there are such things as people you know in real life bullying you on the internet, but that's a vastly different thing.

I can't think of a single problem I've had on webdip that can't be solved by the tried-and-true progression of:

1) ridiculing the offender
2) engaging the offender in serious debate until he's trapped and humiliated
3) ridiculing the offender
4) muting the offender

Needless to say, I've never even needed #4.

muting seems like it would defeat the whole purpose of this here forum

I sometimes wonder if the point of this Forum isn't just to see who can go the longest without muting at least one person.

just a joke. You said you "wonder if the point of the Forum isn't just to see who can go the longest without muting . . . " and I said, as if you proposed an actual contest, "can the admins make it so you can win points that way?"

get it?

Whilst I'm sure the internet allows traditional bullying to be extended to into the home and causes much damage, I doubt that bullying that is entirely internet based (i.e. One anonymous person laying into another) has much impact whatsoever.

If the bullies drop the anonymity it may well start to have a bit of in impact, as it starts to make it more personal. The same if you have been in contact with the bully for a while and feel you, on a certain level, know them. There may also be an impact if there are a huge number of bullies that give the impression that the nation/world has turned against you (more of a celebrity issue, although no doubt this forum is filled with the famous and powerful). In most cases, however, I find it hard to imagine how there could be much impact.

@Octavious - did you see I'm a celebrity get me out of here last night? [no I'm not a regular viewer, my wife was watching it whilst I was in the room]

You should see how remarks made over the internet can affect someone who, judging by her status as a gold medalist olympiad, you wouldn't think was a weak person.

I think sometimes our casual remarks which we give little thought to can have a huge effect on others.
Octavious (2802 D)

@ Maniac

I heard it mentioned on the radio this morning. Like I say, if there are huge numbers an impact is understandable (and clearly has happened in this case), but such things are few and far between, especially for those who don't seek the media spotlight.

We are growing a Nation....world....of woosies. The epedemic of whiny bitchy little kids running to the Principle becuase Johhny made a joke is pathetic, and it diminishes the *real* instances of actual bullying.

Sorry dirge - if you are going to get you panties in a bunch because I call you a Libtard, then you are just a soft woos. Now, if I corner you on the playground and punch you in the nose every day and steal your lunch money....come talk to me.

Seriously...you kiddies need to grow a little thicker skin, and cope with the fact the "bullying" isn't some modern invention; it's a facet of humanity, of being human. Hell, it's a facet of being a conscious creature - go watch some documentaries on monkey. Get yourself a little of kittens and watch the runt get the shit beat out of it by the biggest kitten in the batch. Watch 16 month old toddlers in a nursery...and you will see the very natural act of the larger kid having his way with the smaller, whiny babies...

**Sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can never hurt me**

You are "bullied" on the internet because you empower people with your overly-sensitive whining. Dirge, I defy you to bully me. I defy you to offend me --- you can't, because I don't allow you past my skin. Oh, you can chase me around and say things to me...but you can't bully me, because I don't let you.

It's time to be big boys and girls and stop playing the victim card every time something happens and running off to find someone to fight your imaginary battles for you.

Krellin, what is a "woos"? Do you mean "wuss" ?
krellin (80 DX)

Huh...yes indeed, I do believe I meant "wuss"....What an odd brain thing that was that I typed "woos" and it looked terribly wrong, but for the life of my I just couldn't come up with "wuss". Maybe the "wuss" is so antithetical to my belief that my brain has blocked it...

Ankara Crescent Gunboat 100% VCs
The AC GB 100% VC SRG was something I ran on vDip a while ago, and it was very well received due to the novelty of the idea. The problem with it being based around novelty is, of course, that the novelty wears off, so since most vDippers have now played it the interest over there has died down. In an attempt to revive my variant (at least for a while), I'm inviting any WebDippers who want to to try it out.

Open Letter to an Idiot Co-Worker
[rant] Dear idiot co-worker: When you say, "I'll be in around mid-day," most normal people assume that means before 1:00. It most certainly does not mean 3:45. Your co-workers do not enjoy sitting on their thumbs waiting for the document you promised them just so you can sit around having coffee in your jammies til 11:15 then enjoy a two-martini lunch. Sincerely, Hecks. [/rant]
