Ankara Crescent Gunboat 100% VCs
The AC GB 100% VC SRG was something I ran on vDip a while ago, and it was very well received due to the novelty of the idea. The problem with it being based around novelty is, of course, that the novelty wears off, so since most vDippers have now played it the interest over there has died down. In an attempt to revive my variant (at least for a while), I'm inviting any WebDippers who want to to try it out.

Any chess fans? World Chess Championship starts in a week.
Vishy "old Timer" Anand vs Magnus "young gun" Carlsen

It will be very interesting. I'm not even vaguely good enough to follow the subtleties of such a wonderful match, but the storyline is compelling, and the games will be very interesting to examine.

He's the champion, Putin, but Carlsen is ranked #1.

In past Anand/Carlsen games, Anand has an overwhelmingly better record over Carlsen. Carlsen, especially when he has black pieces, plays wimpy defensive lines and prays for a draw. It would be nice if Carlsen finally takes his gloves off and plays like a grandmaster, not a 2200 player begging for a draw

If there are enough of us, I think it could be fun to have a little mini round robin on game knot. I currently have a game going with ffax which was pretty fun but is looking like a draw now.

with some commentators (Lawrence Trent and Nigel Short come to mind), watching live can be very interesting.

As for a tournament on gameknot, I'd be in but I've hardly played on that site at all.
steephie22 (182 D(S))

I'd be in for the tournament too although I know pretty damn sure I'll get my ass kicked because I retired from chess a few years ago, and I wasn't that good back then either, and since then I played 2 games of fast chess with a dude who only played that so... Well, we were done pretty quick :P

Well, it's been a pretty interesting tournament so far -- certainly a dramatic turn on Saturday. Does anybody think the Berlin defense will get far more popular after this?
Putin33 (111 D)
17 Nov 13 UTC

Looks like all is lost for Anand. Defeated with white pieces? And he was lucky in one of the earlier games to escape with a draw.
Putin33 (111 D)

Berlin defense is pretty, non-aggressive? I can't believe he won with it.
Putin33 (111 D)

After reviewing that game, it appears that Vishy lost it more than Carlsen won it. And he lost it with a bad rook move in the end game. Vishy did not play to attack at all and the thing looked to be a dull draw until the crack-up at the end.

Yes, Putin, Ra4 was a final blunder. If he played b4 he would have a chance.

Did anybody else stay up and watch this game? It was gut-wrenching, though very exciting. It really seemed like Anand would pull something out. It's sad that he spent 40 minutes on Qf4 -- I think the time pressure really got to him, or he probably would have taken the knight move slower and seen the problem.
FolliesOfSpain (113 D)
21 Nov 13 UTC

semck83, in Spain, the game starts at 11 A.M., so it's difficult to watch to me, have to work.

It was a nice game, but Anand blundered again :(. If he played Bf1 Carlsen would have to sac his new queen to avoid mate according to Houdini.
mendax (321 D)
21 Nov 13 UTC

It was probably fairly level before the blunder, but the match had already gone from Anand.

Carlsen era begins. How dreadful for chess. Anand game a good show at least in game 9.
FolliesOfSpain (113 D)

Why do you say dreadful? Carlsen is not my favourite player for the World Champion (I prefer Kramnik, Caruana or even Nakamura), but he deserved it.
Putin33 (111 D)
22 Nov 13 UTC

Deserved it sure, but his style is boring. Painfully so. He basically wins by boring his opponents to death.

Hieronimus (191 D)

He did it! :D

Here in Norway everyone is watching even at work, and all major news channels had live covrage. This guy is really a phenomenon. He beat Karpov at age 13. He plays on when all expects a remis, and he gets wins. Haters gonna hate.

Open Letter to an Idiot Co-Worker
[rant] Dear idiot co-worker: When you say, "I'll be in around mid-day," most normal people assume that means before 1:00. It most certainly does not mean 3:45. Your co-workers do not enjoy sitting on their thumbs waiting for the document you promised them just so you can sit around having coffee in your jammies til 11:15 then enjoy a two-martini lunch. Sincerely, Hecks. [/rant]
