@hecks - If you will note, I did say "Great day for the kid!" or some such sentiment.
But generally speaking, most of the do-gooders that would support this type of thing are the ones the want to see equal <pick your cause> for all, blah blah blah....
...and then they single out a sick kid and make a big show of giving him something the rest of the sick kids don't have.
I would be interested to see what the background is of the "winners" of the make-a-wish type things. You know...socio-economic, racial make-up. I hate to be a <bad word> about this, but I think the fair-minded types around here might suffer a moment of gut-wrenching come-to-Jesus sensations if they look at who recieves the attention. I'm not implying that they are all a bunch of priveledges white kids...most likely they are not...but...
Anyway, if you will read the full extent of my comments above, wouldn't it be better to take the resources put forth for something like this and do something for a **lot** of sick and dying kids, instead of occasionally plucking one from the masses?
Kid saves Gotham City...got it. Very awesome. Wish I could have seen it yadda yadda yadda...
...but realistically, that kid would have had absolutely *zero* expectation of ever having that happen. So, if it never happened, he wouldn't have been all like, "Oh dang...here I am a dying kid, and all i want to do before I die is save a city like Batman...and I know it can happen and those rat b****rds didn't do it me. People suck!"
If instead, for example, they had taken batkid, and a bunch of other kids, and maybe, oh heck, I don't know, pick a cool activity with a bunch of dying kids, and....you get my point?
It's the same thing as this: You know (probably) that I'm not a huge fan of unions. I think they have served their purpose in the past, but what they essentially are in modern form is a monopoloy...something which otherwise would be outlawed becuase monopolies have undue power to harm others....you know, like going on strike and shutting major corporations down to squeeze every last drop of blood out of them before they go bankrupt <...cough cough...GM...cough..Delphi...cough...Chrysler....cough...Airlines...cough cough....endless stream of union labor at bankrupt corps......cough cough...>
So I have a problem with Unions....but my neighbor, the union guy - I don't begrudge him what he personally has. He's got a good deal - is he supposed to say no when they pay him more than he's worth and give him insane benefits and free legal services and etc etc etc. No...good for him. I'm glad my neighbor can pay his mortgage and of course he will take what is offered...but that doesn't mean the union itself, as a whole is a good idea.
So good for the single kid that had a great day.....I'm sure all the other sick and dying kids that watched the batkid video, though, while they coughed up blood felt a little bit worse watching it, because nobody loves them enough (in their mind) to make them batkid for a day...
As for it being a "less selfish waste"....Ha...I'm not so sure about that. It's pretty much completely focused on selfishness....the needs of a single target. And it not like the people reviewing the dying-kid applications, tallying up the donations and making the phone calls to set up the gigs is selling their house to make it all happen...
It's easy to take other people's money and spend it....
OK...I'm jaded...
I'm curious, though, what "pampered adults" are you talking about? Are you talking about people that work for a living and spend money? Like what, a vacation? What are you referring to?
