A Player Left
We're playing our first game, and a player left. Can anything be done to speed up turns since he ain't logging in? When will he dissapear as a player, when all his provinces are conquered at the end of Autumn? How many votes for Draw/Cancel are requiered? Anything else I should know on the situation?
Thanks in advance, guys!

Does my webdeplomacy account work on vdiplomacy?
The login page on vdiplomacy says to enter your webdeplomacy usrnm and pswd, but then it says my account does not exist. Yet, I see names that I recognize on that forum.

Whittle Down Tournament (on vdiplomacy)
There is a Tournament about to start on vdiplomacy.net called the whittle down tournament which needs players! The basic format is that the tourney starts on the site's largest map and players get eliminated from each round and the survivors pass to smaller and smaller maps. For more details, and to sign up, go to http://vdiplomacy.net/forum.php?viewthread=19614#19614

Serious Diplomacy Question- How nice should you be to your allies?
I am a relatively new player to Diplomacy, and often engage in (obviously) diplomacy with other players. However, I seem to find myself being to nice to my supposed allies.
When dealing with allies, how nice is too nice?
Thanks.

The Masters
Hey, I'm having trouble getting the last few games together. I apologize to those whose games are being constantly postponed. I need two volunteers minimum to keep the tournament going. It's only 1 or 2 games folks, can anyone step up?

Leaving webdiplomacy
I've been playing here for about 2 years, but started playing at playdiplomacy about a month ago, and I have to say, they have a better interface, and a community who can actually hold an intelligent discussion. See inside for more reasoning. I hope to see some of you better players over there soon!

When you have allies like this in a game, what do you think is better diplomacy? winning the game, or upholding your good word as a player? example is this very game. could have won, wish you could see the chat. excellent diplomacy and communication here. gameID=79078
Also anyone have any thoughts on how you decide when someone deserves to be part of the draw?
Sandgoose (0 DX)

good point. When should somebody be part of a draw?
When they can either prevent their being removed from the draw or prevent the draw itself.
would you not say when someone has held out from a western triple and has not given up and continued to fight till the end?

I personally tend to go with those who formulate their sentences as "lord redhouse, if it pleases thee"
Why should that matter?

The only error that I see here is drawing with a certain victory in two years' time...
because you could classify that as merit. Someone earning a profit through how they played and for how long they played.

Personally I distinguish between strategical and tactical alliances. A strategical alliance that works toward a common goal can be rewarded with a draw. A tactical alliance that includes cooperation on a lot of moves with no goal but to expand can be terminated in the blink of an eye.

I find it fascinating that the forums for a game revolved around deception and deceit get so many discussions on morals!
My priorities are win, draw, survive, defeat, shrinking draws whenever possible as much as possible. Giving away some of my share of the victory for sticking through their imminent defeat to the end doesn't really register much with me.

The answer to the OP is 'it depends'. If you play for the glory of winning and points or GR then go all out for the win, the others will understand that. If you play for enjoyment then drawing a game where you have the lock on win is fine. I have done this myself many times and enjoy it more when I give up the certain win. There is no right or wrong way to play this game contry to what some people will tell you.

Sandgoose: Certainly, if cooperation was outstanding all game, I think there is little point in stabbing at the end. There are always future games, you know, and if you have a reputation of screwing things up at the last second it backfire down the line. Look at a game like this: gameID=12882. Beleive it or not, Turkey and I were allied from Spring 1901, and meticulously staged all hostile actions against each other throughout the game. It worked amazingly, and proves that even a Turkey-Austria-Hungary alliance can be pulled off. Why would I, after over two decades of total trust and loyalty, stab?

I guess others have covered it. Eliminate all possible unless your goal is something other than maximizing your score.

Yellowjacket: But even if your goal is maximizing your score, the difference in PPSC games is often extremely minimal.

Shit:
I'm tired of going through it.
I'm tired of people acting like it.
I'm tired of people who are full of it.
Not that anyone on this site can tell it apart from something comedic.

Gingrich Promises...US Moon Colony By 2020?!?!
http://video.msnbc.msn.com/martin-bashir/46152472/#46152472
1. I thought you hated all Obama's spending...how much would a MOON COLONY cost?
2. Seriously...seriously, this is what you're resorting to now?
3. I like Star Trek, would love to hsee this happen, someday, but...no, I'm sorry--does ANYONE take this guy seriously? (Or a Moon Colony by 2020, for that matter, assuming the technology did exist, could it be built?)

Request: GR-unrated games
I think it would be a good idea to allow unrated games. After all, not all Chess games are ELO-rated for example.
A simple way to do it would be to make a new variant, say "Classic-unrated". Then, adjust the GR program so that it excludes all games of that variant.
