We're playing our first game, and a player left. Can anything be done to speed up turns since he ain't logging in? When will he dissapear as a player, when all his provinces are conquered at the end of Autumn? How many votes for Draw/Cancel are requiered? Anything else I should know on the situation? Thanks in advance, guys!
The login page on vdiplomacy says to enter your webdeplomacy usrnm and pswd, but then it says my account does not exist. Yet, I see names that I recognize on that forum.
http://vdiplomacy.com/board.php?gameID=5642 Come on and join the chaos variant! Standard map, with 34 players, one per SC! Total randomness! 1-1-2-3-5-8-13!!!
There is a Tournament about to start on vdiplomacy.net called the whittle down tournament which needs players! The basic format is that the tourney starts on the site's largest map and players get eliminated from each round and the survivors pass to smaller and smaller maps. Serious Diplomacy Question- How nice should you be to your allies?
I am a relatively new player to Diplomacy, and often engage in (obviously) diplomacy with other players. However, I seem to find myself being to nice to my supposed allies. When dealing with allies, how nice is too nice? Thanks.
Hey, I'm having trouble getting the last few games together. I apologize to those whose games are being constantly postponed. I need two volunteers minimum to keep the tournament going. It's only 1 or 2 games folks, can anyone step up?
I've been playing here for about 2 years, but started playing at playdiplomacy about a month ago, and I have to say, they have a better interface, and a community who can actually hold an intelligent discussion. See inside for more reasoning. I hope to see some of you better players over there soon!
When you have allies like this in a game, what do you think is better diplomacy? winning the game, or upholding your good word as a player? example is this very game. could have won, wish you could see the chat. excellent diplomacy and communication here. gameID=79078
I'm tired of going through it. I'm tired of people acting like it. I'm tired of people who are full of it. Not that anyone on this site can tell it apart from something comedic.
Since I am now a Masters sub I cannot take my one month planned vacation. Sorry everyone who looked forward to it. But I HAVE decided to limit my trolling comments to one a week or less.
http://video.msnbc.msn.com/martin-bashir/46152472/#46152472 1. I thought you hated all Obama's spending...how much would a MOON COLONY cost? 2. Seriously...seriously, this is what you're resorting to now? 3. I like Star Trek, would love to hsee this happen, someday, but...no, I'm sorry--does ANYONE take this guy seriously? (Or a Moon Colony by 2020, for that matter, assuming the technology did exist, could it be built?)
What does everybody think of Dutch policies? Saw some talk show about it and even though it was in dutch (which I am) I still could understand "Yes minister" better...
I was about to say, as an American citizen, your politicians are significantly better than ours. We can borrow yours for a sec? Next time you vote someone out, we'll draft them.
Perhaps we can organize like a politician exchange because there's some of them we like to see here. Your politicians seem a little more varied among them. Sarah Palin obviously has a different view on things (if any) than Obama. Most Dutch politicians sort of look and think the same, with minor details distinguishing them. I'll send you Job Cohen in exchange for Romney. Deal? ;)
No, please send them Geert Wilders, then we're rid of him and there would be way more chance that WW3 starts in America, and then we get rich of their war... On the other hand who would America attack to cause a WW...
Imo most Western countries 'need' a populist like Wilders, someone who stirs things up and forces the other parties/politicians to reinvent themselves and become more responsive to peoples' feelings and needs. E.g. Cohen (or Verhagen for that matter) is a prime example of how politicians used to behave; he's not particularly strong in live-debates, not charismatic, careful in his phrasing, concerned about hurting other peoples' feelings, and always seeking a compromise right from the start. Social party's leader Roemer on the other hand is open-minded, not too concerned with what people think of him, and vigorous in defending his standpoints. With more aggressive reporters, twitter and other social media keeping track of every move politicians make politicians, ministers in particular, need to be able to think on their feet, be familiar with their portfolios, and must be aware of what society looks for in politicians nowadays.
For example, former minister of integration Vogelaar completely embarrassed herself by refusing to answer to a question about her press-agent for about 3 minutes... no doubt that cost her party votes, similar to Cohen's inability to voice his opinion. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=YKUHWD7Yw4s#t=108s
She might have been very knowledgeable and all but a minister's job is to promote and defend policy- there are plenty of people on the background capable of forming and executing the finer details, after all.
While we're at it, Klaus could be send over the pond as well. He should have some fanbase in the US like Wilders. I'm thinking Heritage Foundation and such. These types always do ;)
@mr_rb: 'social party', socialistic party you mean.
I myself am very jealous of the English parlement where a real show is put on and people really need to defend their ideas. In Holland we are ruled by a bunch of technocrats and virtually every opposition is being evaded. And then I don't mean the stupid opposition of 'Doe es normaal joh' and 'Doe zelf eens normaal'. I need people who wholeheartedly disagree with eachother and afterwards drink a beer in the pub. Notably the left is just like one party of liberal democrats with slightly different flavors.
On the other hand, we've got the Animal Party in the chamber. Take that, Ron Paul!
NL is probably the most conservative nation in EU. I never understood why they see themselves as liberals. I still love to go sailing there. All the best from duitsland. (and as it seems you will also soon have the strictest drug policies in Eu...)
@ steephie, what is exactly the purpose of your question? What is it you dont understand?
i actually do think we had a history of having quite decent politicians in the Netherlands, only the last few years they are passing by to quickly. And yet again, it is proven you cant get enough good people the moment a new party is growing to fast.
@iLLuM & redhouse I agree, if I would neglect their stances on abortion, euthanasia, gay marriage, subsidized unemployment (WW), tax policy, defense, health care, promotion of unions, religious freedom. To be more precise: if you neglect all that is possible that detemines whether or not a country is conservative, I do definitely agree with you. That's changing, among others due to the recent ban on "fullface helmets, balaklavas and burqas", but to say it is conservative already, is factually wrong.
and btw, conservatism is in my opinion flawed in itself. I think current government is more able to enable people move forward, more so than previous governments. The first purple government (1994-1998) did a very good job in establishing social liberties (in my mind the only thing governments should provide) e.g. a huge health-care reform, some mentioned in my first post above. The problem right now in the Netherlands and all over the world is, we see politician don't have a clue how modern technology works and the impact of laws on those technologies. I liked the interesting debates about PIPA, SOPA and ACTA on this site, but I know the politicians either don't comprehend this or don't want to see that such legislation always will have this effect on freedom.
@steephie No, nationality doesn't matter on all levels of politics.
@carpenter: in my opinion the Dutch support liberal positions partly inspired by their "fashionability" and/or carelessness on certain issues, and also partly by how conservative they are in their own lives. Walk into an average Dutch house: you see a very orderly family, with mum and dad having very traditional roles and the children behaving very properly, all of them crying how progressive they are. I don't buy it. The Dutch vote progressive, they are at heart conservative.
my parents are like that redhouse, i can't do things just because i can't, but you can't say all dutch people are... i'm planning to make an attempt on world peace when i'm 18 and done with school... the only conservative thing about that is wanting to finish school, right? oh, and to answer the unevitable question about what my plan includes: still busy with that one but basically the Jews will have to give up Israël and wait a while and then there's peace with religions, the Jews should give it up if they truly believe in peace, then it can be as it was before the crusades, peace... i know it has some small flaws but working on it... maybe this should be an apart thread, what do you guys think?
and carpenter: really? i don't know for sure but it seems a bit weird to me like that, then the "bad" muslims could just wait until they are the biggest country and then you've got the successor of Bin Laden as president...
@redhouse- That's just your personal opinion, perhaps based on your own experiences. Your impression is also completely contradictory with my own experience of Dutch families by the way. However, apart from personal experiences, figures on all of the fields carpenter mentions indicate a progressive attitude supported by a significant part of the population.
A parliamentary system with a Grand Pensionary, as exists in the United Netherlands - compared to the older such system in the UK. These are not what is portrayed in "Yes, Minister" and the sequel "Yes Prime Minister". The 2 Britcoms highlight a dim, slow-witted minister often outwitted by a (in the Latter show, "Cabinet Secretary" thus head of all civil servants in the ministerial bureaucracies. The PM is aided by a "private parliamentary secretary." The TV shows veer towards satiric truth, but parliamentary debate - or even the weekly Prime Minister's Question Time is not portrayed in these Britcoms with which this Thread began ...
@steephie, I don't understand what you mean, but I said "not all". Presidents need to be a "natural born citizen of the US", same holds for national representatives of other nations. Last time I checked this did not apply to Bin Laden's successor. But he could become a mayor in Smalltown, CO. @redhouse I'm wondering when's the time you went there: it is commonly understood that for a large number of years kids at secondary schools [in the Netherlands] are getting worse at manners (informal to teachers (in Dutch: tutoyeren)). Some adults are even currently relocated, because they are unable to behave in a current setting. This is in complete contrast of what you said that "you see [...] children behav[e] very properly". But maybe I wasn't brought up in a traditional family, yet my parents claim to be very conservative: they personally reject almost all bans and limitations set by your (and my parents') government, yet they like to promote traditional life (say: like the 1920's), but with modern technology and current infrastructure. I think you're mixing up being strict in raising people and being a conservative: What do you think is "a true conservative"?
@steephie22: Teaser for "Yes, Prime Minister" British TV comedy: A Diplomatic Incident The Prime Minister & the French ambassador disagree. A running gag in the PM parts is that he wants to cancel Trident & build up a Land Army, so to settle Unemployment he will reinstitute Conscription. Defence and the Cabinet Secretary go ballistic. ALL the shows in both series end with the phrase, "Yes, Minister"
You say one can understand the Parliament in The Hague on streaming Live TV if one doesn't know Dutch?
Not sure if this goes here, or I'm supposed to email this to the mods, but this game needs to be unpaused: http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=73347
Anyone dare take me up on the challenge? I'm hoping to at least see The Czech, Lando, Eden, jmeyers, Barn3tt, Frank, Troodonte, Babak, Eden, Lando, rdrivera, Dunecat, uclabb, Eden, fulhamish, Troodonte, and Lando.
I think it would be a good idea to allow unrated games. After all, not all Chess games are ELO-rated for example. A simple way to do it would be to make a new variant, say "Classic-unrated". Then, adjust the GR program so that it excludes all games of that variant.
