2. If you visit ebay you can say atari 2600 or nes or sega genesis systems with game lots that ALL work. those machines are 20 years old or more and are now collectors items. PS2 will never become a collector items. It will just be forgotten.

I think I can find lots of atari 2600s or Genesis' or SNES that don't work... Just because the one used PS2 you got doesn't work isn't exactly reason to think the product stinks as a whole. I don't think you have a large enough sample size to jump to conclusions. I loved the PS2!

Whether you want to acknowledge it or not, the CD/DVD drive in a PS2 is a mechanical device....it fails. Of all the computer hardware that I have had to replace over the years, the CD/DVD is the most consistent failure, right next to hard drives. The damned thing spins at probably 5400 RPM (not sure about PS2 spec...)....YOU spin at 5400 RPM for 11 years and then get back to me.

PS3 has a built in web browser which you can use to visit webdiplomacy. You can also plug in any USB mouse and/or keyboard to make nav and typing easier.

My PS2 had problems with blue disks and with some googling that seemed common. Are the disks you are trying to use blue or silver? In any case, a new PS2 is pretty cheep these days and you'd probably have a lot more luck.

Yeah, and the OP is an idiot. Any second hand electronics can wind up faulty. If someone is willing to just give it away, it might be suspect. Also, one sample point is not enough to condemn an entire brand.

OP, maybe the laser is not the only problem. Perhaps with an old device there are multiple issues or the tech that you are bringing it to is all too happy to keep on "fixing" it for you while taking your money.

150 Million PS2s have been sold. Even if you read 10,000 threads about ODD issues, that's less than 0.01%.

The reality is that moving parts are more fragile than non-moving parts. Also, more complicated things are more likely to break than less complicated things. Yeah, an Atari will probably last forever. But, it doesn't even come close to the complexity of a PS2. And, quite frankly, the PS2 wasn't designed to last over a decade as they came out with the PS3 to replace it.

Now, with that being said, my roommates PS2 works just fine.

I understand your frustration, but at the same time, you can get this console for $50 on ebay. They aren't exactly charging an arm and a leg for them.

If you want to complain about consoles, there's plenty: xbox red ring of death, Insecure PS network, etc.

But, ODD failure on a decade old device? ...

I once traded the Magic: the Gathering card "Fork" for a Super NES. I'd traded some random card I pulled from a pack for the forkm so the cost to me was like three fifty. That machine still works.

Later, I traded a Force of Nature MTG card for an original Playstation, Memory card slot 2 didn't work, the system as a whole lasted a month. I think I paid 5 bucks for the Force.

Clearly what this means is: never trade in-print cards for a game system.

So I bought these jeans at a second hand store, I was so excited to try them out. You guys have no idea. So I go to put them on and wouldn't you believe it the zipper broke. Fuck Antoine Bugle Boy and fuck his jeans. He's a pederast and a tax cheat.

On another note, after extended use there's a tendency for the lens to get covered in accrued dust leading to "No disc inserted" and "Disc read error". You can simply open it up and using a diluted isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free wipe gently clean it. That's what I did and it's been working without issue ever since.

I'm just sad that there isn't a "real" console anymore like super nes or genesis.
Of course Nintendo is still around but that Wi seems more like a trendy gym device for women rather than a traditional console.
if you want to buy something to play games nowadays, you better get a pc :P
