Newbie looking for my game...
Sorry if this is obvious, but nothing in FAQs helped. I joined a game yesterday, my points went down from 100 to 75 (and still at that level) indicating that I joined.... but nothing shows up under "my games". How do I find the game I joined? Am I missing a step?

White House Hypocrisy...
They get the debt deal....and before the ink is dry, Obama is out giving his victory speech, proclaiming that the battle is not over, that everyone must sacrifice....Higher taxes are on the way. Kind of make a dude want to puke.

Is it me or am I playing gunboat idiots
Question about my time in the Summer gunboat tourney.
I know I have made bad moves, no need to point that out. This is especially true in the early game. Overall, however, I feel I played tactically and strategically sound games. Despite this fact, there was a winner in 3 of the 4 games I played, and, in my opinion, all the fault of my competitors. I would like your opinion about how culpable I was.

http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=57788#gamePanel

I used a delayed barbarossa to confront a clear Juggernaut. Yet I was stabbed, not once, but twice by England, the second which caused me to crumble under the russian onslaught and Turkey eventually stabbed russia for the win.

http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=58662#gamePanel

I played as Italy and won 1/4 share. I played cautious but I knew I needed points

http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=60551#gamePanel

Italy refused to cooperate against a growing Austria and helped him into my territory and to a win. Idiotic play if you ask me.

http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=60562#gamePanel

France makes a feeble attempt to Britain only helping in Russias growth (gives russia which was already huge, scandanavia. Russia gets a solo.

Its as if nobody has any understanding of the balance of power or their own strategic good, ridiculously frustrating. I would like to hear your opinions.

In game 60551, Italy played badly and he missed a turn as well. Germany did not see Austria as a threat. It seems like some people like to play for second best in a wta game.

I'm sure inexperience played a part in some of what you're talking about, Santa. It's an open tournament. I ran into a little bit of what you're lamenting, but I played a piss poor tourney on top of it, so no casting stones for me.
I didn't in my opinion, yet I always was next to the guy who lost the plot. This is not about casting stones this is about asking about my play. I didnt mention anyone by name.

Ok, you didn't mention names, but you did provide links and discuss certain countries. Anyway, that comment was more about my own feelings than a shot at you.

People don't always 'get' balance of power. But it is also your job to make them see it...

In a gunboat, Lando?
I wish I have a magic map marker I can draw on that will show up on everyone's map for gunboats.
trip (696 D(B))
01 Aug 11 UTC
Too true, Lando, but it's frustrating when then don't see it no matter what you do.
Yes, you're right. But you always have to try... some people will never get it.
I did try, see all the supports and support holds and the moving units away from borders, those were just occasions for them to stab me
I think giving up too much provides a much larger temptation.

I find in gunboat, if you're going to solo you really have to make an early move. If you are in tough fights and someone else is getting big, don't worry about trying to cut them down. Hold your ground and play realy patiently. That big player can get to 17 and its no different than stopping them at 12, right?
zultar (4180 DMod(P))
01 Aug 11 UTC
Yeah because stopping a 17 is the same as stopping a 12 in a gunboat game.
I don't know if you're being sarcastic, but I believe it is similar. There are countless stalemate lines on the map.
zultar (4180 DMod(P))
01 Aug 11 UTC
Yeah, I am being sarcastic. You have to have a good amount of units to stop a 17 power from winning and positions matter. Who is more likely to have better position, the near solo or the 8-12? And you cannot assume the other players also understand stalemate and not playing for second best.
But at that point it is more critical that everyone cooperates. If you go out on a limb to work against a 12 centre power you may be seen as stabbable and therefore expendable.

But I think everyone in this thread is correct, if people don't understand the game (WTA, communication via moves) it becomes ahrder to work with them.

Try and eliminate the gunboat wildcards early, I guess.

I didn't mean that as a challenge, but I've seen a few of your games, and I think I'll learn a bit and enjoy the process.

I share some of asantas frustration. I was in one of those games and france basically handed russia the solo early on. Players need to understand everything has repercussions and there is a reaction to every action. The number one thing i would like to educate new players in all dip games is that just because you CAN do something doesnt mean you SHOULD. Taking that open center because its not defended may help others even more than yourself.

Every round was seeded in some way by experience (total games played) and you played against 24 different individuals so even though it was an open first leg, every player had what I believe to be equal chances.

In my experience, the biggest mistake most gunboaters make is picking their alliance too early and then finding out the horse they backed isn't the brightest bulb in the lot. If England supports France into Belgium and then finds out France is an idiot that let Italy win, it was just as much England's fault.

The longer you wait to make an alliance, the more time you have to make sure its the right one.

There were some very- let's say inexperienced- players in my games as well... Very frustrating.
followed the advice of this thread, I just went all out in my last game and came away with the win. I think i might make it a habit

Beatles White Album
Thoroughly enjoying it at this moment...reminiscing about the various states of mind I encountered myself in low those many years ago in college when I discovered this album. That was the time in my life were I enjoyed the vision of purple jellyfish dropping their tendrils out of the sky upon an unsuspecting humanity. Ahhh....good times...

An idea inspired by the Who am I? game thread, only much simpler. Answer a trivia question. If you get it right, you get to ask the next one.

Argument is War
Left wing statists Lakoff and Johnson made the statement that "Argument is War" in their book Metaphors we live by. They were exactly right and the war has been raging between statists and realists long before the book was published.

After nearly 3.5 years, I finally finished 100 games!
I like how I still have single digit survives, since survives are my least favorite, they mean I gave up a solo while alive. I was kind of hoping for 50 draws and 25 wins, along with the 16 defeats and 9 survives, then D = 2w, w = d + s, D = w + d + s, and d ~= 2s, but suppose I won't complain. ;-)

Yogurtini and BTO Yogurt are two examples of the marketplace responding to idiotic government attempts to legislate a standard of living which only succeeds in diminishing the number of jobs and increasing unemployment.
