Why are they always 5 minute phases, never 10? 10 minutes is so much better, actually gives you time to think, or get up for a bathroom break, if and when necessary. Not to mention, agree to finalise, and it's just as fast as a 5 minute game.
what do you all think of an alliance between italy, france and austria?? austria and italy probably has to face a juggernaut and france has to face germany...
well, tell me what you think... i think it could be a really powerful alliance that can beat the other 4 countries if they aren't all working together... if they are all attacking 1 of those 3 countries russia wins, but if england, germany or turkey is attacking russia the alliance will win... there is only a problem if england and germany work together against france and russia and turkey form a juggernaut... but in that case france is down and england and germany should face the juggernaut... i think it could be a very powerful opening for austria that has to face a juggernaut most of time, for italy who is in a defensive position and can't advance much on france or austria and now can move and convoy to everywhere on the world and france gets an NAP with italy and more is not needed because it'll result the same in the opening... i don't think it'll become a 3-way draw if the alliance is succesful because then they can still take out 1 of the 3... it'll give austria more chance because he can hold strong against the juggernaut with italy, and that's his biggest worry at the beginning... so what do you guys think??
I would imagine that would work best if France is planning to attack England with help from Germany. If France aligns with England he will probably end up moving into a Med game once Germany is defeated. However once England is gone, and Austria and Italy have defeated Turkey and Russia, where will Italy go?
i thought of that, that's why i would attack germany with england... then italy can attack england, and otherwise italy can convoy armies to his fronts in turkey and advance on russia if austria haven't blocked him or convoy around france into enemy territory... or he attacks france or austria dependent on the situation, like I said: it'll not end with a 3-way draw, not I-F-A... france will probably be to busy so italy can stab france and take him down and maybe there can become a draw between E/G-I-A, but it still works for I and A and F will accept an agreement with I most of time so no worries there... maybe i can better call it a I-A alliance but that let you think I attacks F...
Irish Farmers Association? (http://www.ifa.ie/) IFA is indeed a powerful force when it get's properly roused. Though they're F-ing tends to be forgotten behidn the I-ing and A-ing...
Traditional I would play for a F/G/A rather than a F/G/I (unless I'm Italy!) because of the ease of the alliance. France will end up with the western half of the board. Austria can't really challenge France in the Med and will take the southeast board. Finally Germany has basically the rest of board. Also France and Germany can make pretty good agreement on DMZ at Bur/Ruh/Hol/Bel. Again Austria and France can't really go at it becuase of Austrian lack of fleets and Piedmont. Germany and Austria should never come to blows (Richard Sharps Game of Diplomacy)
In classic Diplomacy, I am incapable of getting anything going with Russia. England always comes in from the north, Turkey from the south, and Austria and Germany usually aren't too friendly. Any ideas as to how to survive as Russia?
I'm considering joining some games where players have left. That way I might practice moves in cornered situations and also shake up the game a bit, making it more interesting – I think. Is this appreciated by the others players that have been abandoned by someone CDing, or will I get accused of massaging my rating by aiming at a cheap survive?
We are meeting at 10:00 this Sunday at Dice Dojo. That is at 5550 Broadway on the North side of Chicago. A couple of players had to drop out. Anyone interested, please post here.

I think it would be useful to have an additional chat tab where your own country is listed, in which you can talk to yourself. Not only would it introduce a new dimension to the game for schizophrenics, you would also be able to take notes about the game and remind yourself to do things.
