Why are they always 5 minute phases, never 10? 10 minutes is so much better, actually gives you time to think, or get up for a bathroom break, if and when necessary. Not to mention, agree to finalise, and it's just as fast as a 5 minute game.
what do you all think of an alliance between italy, france and austria?? austria and italy probably has to face a juggernaut and france has to face germany...
In classic Diplomacy, I am incapable of getting anything going with Russia. England always comes in from the north, Turkey from the south, and Austria and Germany usually aren't too friendly. Any ideas as to how to survive as Russia?
I'm considering joining some games where players have left. That way I might practice moves in cornered situations and also shake up the game a bit, making it more interesting – I think. Is this appreciated by the others players that have been abandoned by someone CDing, or will I get accused of massaging my rating by aiming at a cheap survive?
We are meeting at 10:00 this Sunday at Dice Dojo. That is at 5550 Broadway on the North side of Chicago. A couple of players had to drop out. Anyone interested, please post here.

Global chat taken from a game. Context: Attempting to understand why someone would take over Russia. WhiteSammy(Me) was playing Austria and Draugnar was Germany.
14 Apr 2009 WhiteSammy: Autumn, 1911: can i ask why you took over a country where the only sc under your control is in a foreign country? 14 Apr 2009 Draugnar: Autumn, 1911: shut up 15 Apr 2009 WhiteSammy: Spring, 1912: im only asking and he is under no obligation to answer my question 15 Apr 2009 Draugnar: Spring, 1912: gunboat - shut up 16 Apr 2009 WhiteSammy: Spring, 1912: ok
WhiteSammy, I would have given it to you, but obi asked first. I've long ago forgotten that exchange. But if it makes you feel better, "shut up, it's gunboat!" :-)
Oh, and reviewing old games and carrying grudges across is metagaming. ;-)
Draugnar, you may have been joking in your post above, but you seem to be a little confused about your definition of metagaming (and I know this as you have accused me of it via PM in a particularly abusive manner).
From the rules: "You can't make alliances for reasons outside a game, such as because you are friends, relatives or in return for a favour in another game. This is known as metagaming and is against the rules because it gives an unfair advantage to those involved. If you are worried that you can't stab someone because you want to stay friends, then that's fair enough but you can't join a game with them."
Holding a grudge is not meta-gaming. Acting on it is.
but what about learning from experience? There is going to be a certain amount of carry on in any non anon game since you learn people's play styles, and so are less likely to trust them or whatever. Is that metagaming, or being smart?
First, I meant acting on it. Second, there is illegal and acceptable metagaming. Pre-arranged alliances are the former. Holding a grudge (by which I mean acting on it) is a grey area but falls in the latter as basically unprovable anyhow. The definition on the site lists some examples of illegal metagaming, but the mods have other forms they consider unacceptable that aren't included there. Ask a mod about holding a paused game hostage for a draw some time. They'll tell you that they will forcibly unpause it and if the offender repeats the offense, more severe action may be forthcoming.
I think it would be useful to have an additional chat tab where your own country is listed, in which you can talk to yourself. Not only would it introduce a new dimension to the game for schizophrenics, you would also be able to take notes about the game and remind yourself to do things.
