Why are they always 5 minute phases, never 10? 10 minutes is so much better, actually gives you time to think, or get up for a bathroom break, if and when necessary. Not to mention, agree to finalise, and it's just as fast as a 5 minute game.
That was an interesting game, shame we had a pair of CDs, though honestly without the German one, I don't think I would have survived. Thanks to both trip and Lando for tolerating (grudingly?) my willingness to stab any and everyone around me :-)
So, I saw that everyone except me had voted for the draw and that Russia could eliminate England (one centre and surrounded by Russian fleets) later that year, and decided that I'd vote for a draw afterwards. It turned out that Russia preferred to attack me and although I could defend against any attack, England obviously would not be eliminated soon so I voted for the draw to end it.
1908 and 1910 were hilarious blunders in that if I had not misordered units, I would have won the game.
1911 and 1912 were tense as I awaited the orders, thinking to myself "ITALY! ATTACK WARSAW! If you do that Berlin can't be defended and we win! Do it now before F STP reaches BAL!"
Any thoughts on the diplomacy? (Yes, I know that sounds stupid since this was gunboat.)
I was trying to maintain the balance of power between you two. I think I stabbed Russia too early, I might have gotten support into Trieste, and made it into the Ionian. But Russia was doing well up North, so I had to slow him down a little, then when he was sufficiently slowed and there was no IF conflict, so I had to turn around again.
England especially played very well - that defence was brilliant! You and Italy both at certain points in the game correctly predicted when I would and would not use the self standoff and supported my attacks against each other (which probably cost me the game but had me laughing my arse off anyway).
I really could not believe England was defending that position with only one unit - half of my attention in the late part of the game was just spent thinking "Can I eliminate England NOW? No? How about next turn? What if I move the fleet there, THEN can I take Liverpool?"
I wanted to keep trying to push along the stalemate line with you aoe. I just couldn't get by the wall that T and R had set up. I would have needed Silesia if I had any hope but you were blocking my way pretty good.
I was comfortable continuing to play because i knew france needed tunis or warsaw to win and those would be easily stopped.
i got off to a great start, but i knew once italy and france started teaming after germany bailed i knew i'd be in trouble. gram, i was throwing supports for you against italy forever. i considered taking out england, but i needed that army to keep france at bay. must go back and look for blunders
trip, why didn't you take Liverpool at the end there? You couldn't have taken Belgium or even MAO. After losing ENC I'd just retreat to Picardy and rebuild the destroyed fleet.
becuase i couldn't get a unit there to hold you up if i did. taking out england would have left the nao open for you to work through. and england played well all game so i saw no reason to take him out unless it would help me solo...which wasn't going to happen.
you couldn't retreat and rebuild. your fourth fleet came from taking berlin.
Actually, the fleet in IRS you attack was destroyed. I would have opened BRE and just built a new fleet; then I could have held that line indefinitely; the difference being that you would not have enough units to take LVP from there, so after you attacked me instead of England, I thought I might as well vote for the draw then rather than after four more years of stalemate (the difference from you having taken Liverpool being that England had to be included in the draw).
if it was a 1400pt game instead of 140, i may have tried to take out england, but i was really worried about france moving in behind me and taking advantage of me moving out of position. england was no threat, france...huge. if he got a fleet behind me it would have been a russian buffet.
what do you all think of an alliance between italy, france and austria?? austria and italy probably has to face a juggernaut and france has to face germany...
In classic Diplomacy, I am incapable of getting anything going with Russia. England always comes in from the north, Turkey from the south, and Austria and Germany usually aren't too friendly. Any ideas as to how to survive as Russia?
I'm considering joining some games where players have left. That way I might practice moves in cornered situations and also shake up the game a bit, making it more interesting – I think. Is this appreciated by the others players that have been abandoned by someone CDing, or will I get accused of massaging my rating by aiming at a cheap survive?
We are meeting at 10:00 this Sunday at Dice Dojo. That is at 5550 Broadway on the North side of Chicago. A couple of players had to drop out. Anyone interested, please post here.
Looking for a 16 friends to play a world map variant.

I think it would be useful to have an additional chat tab where your own country is listed, in which you can talk to yourself. Not only would it introduce a new dimension to the game for schizophrenics, you would also be able to take notes about the game and remind yourself to do things.
