Why are they always 5 minute phases, never 10? 10 minutes is so much better, actually gives you time to think, or get up for a bathroom break, if and when necessary. Not to mention, agree to finalise, and it's just as fast as a 5 minute game.
what do you all think of an alliance between italy, france and austria?? austria and italy probably has to face a juggernaut and france has to face germany...
In classic Diplomacy, I am incapable of getting anything going with Russia. England always comes in from the north, Turkey from the south, and Austria and Germany usually aren't too friendly. Any ideas as to how to survive as Russia?
I'm considering joining some games where players have left. That way I might practice moves in cornered situations and also shake up the game a bit, making it more interesting – I think. Is this appreciated by the others players that have been abandoned by someone CDing, or will I get accused of massaging my rating by aiming at a cheap survive?
When someone goes into CD, the game becomes unbalanced. When you pick up the pieces of the CD'd nation, some of that balance (although obviously not all) is restored. By joining, you turn an uninteresting game into an interesting one.
Using this to gain cheap points is not a very viable strategy. When a country CDs, all its neighbours generally rush towards him to take the free centers. So you enter a game with literally everyone attacking you. It takes quite some skill to maneuver that to a win/draw/survive.
I would say that it's poor etiquette to ever aim for a survive. The goal is to win, and if you can't win, to stop other people from winning and be part of a draw.
I would absolutely join the game, abgemacht is right. A game with 7 is always better. But play to win if you join, and if you can't win, stop someone else from winning.
Those who would benefit from the CD will hate you; those who would not benefit will thank you until you act against their interest.
In my view there's nothing wrong with a cheap survive in PPSC format. If it's WTA, then you should go along with :) and try to stop somone from winning if you cannot win yourself. At the end of the day you get to call the shots for your country, and if your objectives are modest that shouldn't offend anyone.
I always appreciate it when someone fills in for a CD because there's been at least three times that I was on a path to winning, someone CD'ed in a way that would have handed me the win, and everyone appealed to my better nature to make it a draw. And I, being somewhat of a softie, agreed each time rather than look like a total jerk. If someone had picked up any of those CD's, I would have won those games.
Vilkas, I think it is a nice idea. I don't think you'll earn a lot of points, as others have said, but it does help games finish out in a more exciting manner. You may find yourself in some difficult positions, but it could be very good practice for figuring out how to help build a stalemate with a coalition of smaller powers and force a draw.
These kind of games can provide a very good learning experience. You will have to master the diploamcy, getting multiple players off your back isn't easy. But even then you will also have to master the tactics, since recovering from a bad position might require some strong moves.
All in all, I think everyone's happy when you take over a CD'd country.
But, I agree with smiley face that it's better to try this plan in WTA games. In PPSC, being vulnarable is often a reason for other player to gang up on you.
I picked up a dropped 6 center France recently that only had 3 units and have turned it into what will probably be a three or four way draw instead of seeing my neighbors gobble up unprotected SCs. It's been one of the most enjoyable non-league type games to date.
We are meeting at 10:00 this Sunday at Dice Dojo. That is at 5550 Broadway on the North side of Chicago. A couple of players had to drop out. Anyone interested, please post here.
Looking for a 16 friends to play a world map variant.
Thucy, hellalt, Xapi, fortknox, President Eden, abgemacht, figlesquidge, peterwiggin, djbent, jbalcorn, others who have played me and would like to join in? Small pot, non-anon, WTA?
I think it would be useful to have an additional chat tab where your own country is listed, in which you can talk to yourself. Not only would it introduce a new dimension to the game for schizophrenics, you would also be able to take notes about the game and remind yourself to do things.
