We're not who we appear to be: something good, bad, or indifferent?
The anonymity that is inherent in message boards like this and the consequent increased boldness or recklessness with which most of us are apt to behave as compared to how we would behave in our "real" lives leads me to wonder out loud: at what point, if ever, does this presentation of a sort of alternate personality constitute lying? And if it is a form of lying, does it matter?

In my opinion hanging was too good for them, maybe the electric chair would have been more fitting.

Need A Replacement For France
I'm looking for an active, respected player to partner with the remaining French player in our Dummy trial game (gameID=143236). If you aren't familiar with this game, each country has 2 players that equally share control (press, moves, etc). Let me know if you're interested.

@ SYnapse:

"Perhaps atheists need to be more religious and more spiritual, even if they don't believe in nonmaterial concepts."

Please, give us an example of something which is "religious and spiritual", and which is also based entirely on material concepts.

Investigating consciousness could be one thing. You said an example of something materially spiritual. Tantric sex is another. There are many, many examples.

As an atheist agnostic raised in a family of Mormons, I'd like to return to the point of fasting: Mormons are supposed to fast 2 meals or 24 hours every month on the first Sunday of the month, and then they contribute what is called a "fast offering" to the church's charity arm of an amount roughly equal to what they would have spent on those meals for the poor.

I've never heard of these short-term fasts causing any physical harm, and members are encouraged NOT to fast if they aren't healthy. As I understand Ramadan very little (wikipedia for the most part) I can only say that it seems relatively benign health-wise, though I would share the concern about hydration in desert areas, it hardly seems harmful.

Synapse, if you want to get the full experience of a religious fast, you need to participate in prayers as well; fasting is supposed to be done for a reason, and I feel like the "reasons" you've outlined thus far don't really work. Do you feel any more spiritual through fasting? Is abstaining from eating during daylight hours giving you some valuable new perspective? It seems silly that your Muslim friends at work would challenge you to participate in the fast without inviting you to the rest of the services, or have you just declined the latter offers?

Dresden you raise interesting points.

To be honest, I was doing it more of a diet than a pilgrimage. I guess it has shed light on how much unnecessary glutton I was subjecting myself to before, and my mind feels a little clearer. I don't believe in God though, so praying is a little silly.

Then you're more trying out "the Ramadan diet" than anything else, which I think Putin raised a point against, saying that it's never been proven to benefit people more than any other sort of controlled dieting. Gaining control/perspective on caloric needs or trying out a new diet because it might grant a clearer mental state is commendable, but it's also not what Ramadan is.

Granted, I don't "have faith" in a God or gods, but I've absolutely seen the power that belief, right or wrong, can have. If you want to try out Ramadan, go all the way. visit your local mosque, attend the prayer sessions with an open mind. To paraphrase Biblical Jesus, Don't be a lukewarm beverage. So if you really want to do Ramadan, it's only respectful to do it right.

From your answer to Putin's first post: "I'm not fasting for any God, just out of respect for those who don't have food in the world, and as a health initiative, and to share in someone else’s experience."

Fasting out of "respect" seems to me foolish and patronizing at worst, and there are much better ways for you to follow a health initiative. The only reason left that I feel is cause enough for action then is to share in someone else's experience, and unless you choose to share completely, any insight you gain from the experience will be lacking.

Thanks for the game, everyone. Not particularly well played by myself; I made at least 2 serious blunders and probably should have been eliminated, but it was still great fun.
