Webdiplomacy Population
I am curious as to the demographics of this site. Things like country of residence/ origin (however you identify) , state if an American, and age/ gender. Just curious to see the type of people who are on , feel free to add more info. I'll go first

Feature: Min/Max DipPoints for New Games
How about being able to create new games restricted to players joining based on their max or min amount of DipPoints?
Jeff Kuta (2066 D)

I tried to post this to the ToDo List forum, but I couldn't log in, and I couldn't retrieve a lost password. Speaking of which, can't password retrieval be automated?

I'm new to this site and therefore only have a small number of DipPoints as yet. As I understand it, DipPoints serve as a proxy for player skill---more points generally equates to better skill, or at least a greater number of games successfully completed with points awarded.

What if there were an additional filter for joining games based on the current number of DipPoints? If you're relatively new to the site, you could set a max of perhaps 100 D current so that the sharks out there couldn't join. If you're an old-timer, maybe you could set a floor of 100 D so that you'd be assured that it was a higher caliber of competition and you'd have less chance of flakes messing up the game.

There ya go. Chew it up and spit it out.

As a relatively new player myself, I want to say that I would much rather play with experienced old-timers than new players. Even if it means I may not get as many points, it means learning more, and having better quality games. I would encourage you to try to join games with experienced players, if they will have you.
Also, you can somewhat filter games using the password. There have been many threads that have been used to create games with certain requirements, and if the creator sees that the players meet the requirements, then they send them the password. So although your feature may make things a little easier, I dont think that it is a high priority feature right now, and you can certainly make do without it.

If you're talking about the Dev Forum, you need to set up a separate username/pw. They aren't connected to this site.

If you're looking for a game with specific people, feel free to add a pw and advertise on the Forum. That's the best you can do atm.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I am willing to take on any and all who are here. I just am a bit frustrated at games, in particular live games, where someone flakes out and screws everything up by being absent the first year. Not everyone will back off and end those games.

Plus, as a new player here, but an old hand at gaming, I *want* to be the shark in the small stakes games so I can more quickly get my points up and start playing for bigger stakes with more reliable opponents.

I don't think there should be a max points threshold. There are pretty frequent games with pots of many thousands of points but that's not so that new players or players with fewer points can't join, it's just high stakes, a bigger gamble. If you can't join those games, it's not like you can't play with quality players, like others above said. We have new tournaments and series games coming up all the time.
Dip points are largely irrelevant. There are strong players with few points who have just had a bad recent run. I expect there are weak players with considerable points who have feasted on newbies and CDs. There are flaky players at all point and skill levels.

If you want a quality game, try the GR challenge. If you do well, you'll improve your GR, and consequently be in a higher grouping the next go around.

Hey, THM, that's some awesome advice about the GR Challenge. Maybe you should follow it. : )

Or you could be like me and royally screw up your GR during Abge's thing and the masters.
Haha, not satisfied with me just pimping your Challenge in other threads, eh abge?

We're not who we appear to be: something good, bad, or indifferent?
The anonymity that is inherent in message boards like this and the consequent increased boldness or recklessness with which most of us are apt to behave as compared to how we would behave in our "real" lives leads me to wonder out loud: at what point, if ever, does this presentation of a sort of alternate personality constitute lying? And if it is a form of lying, does it matter?

Need A Replacement For France
I'm looking for an active, respected player to partner with the remaining French player in our Dummy trial game (gameID=143236). If you aren't familiar with this game, each country has 2 players that equally share control (press, moves, etc). Let me know if you're interested.

Thanks for the game, everyone. Not particularly well played by myself; I made at least 2 serious blunders and probably should have been eliminated, but it was still great fun.
