Also, the peace prize is highly subjective and has often been accused of being political.

@bosox, those are due to unusual circumstances and are rare exceptions. It used to be that a nominee could die between nomination and selection, however the current policy is that the person must be alive at the time of announcement. The policies have never allowed the dead to be nominated. Unless those long standing policies change, the deceased won't be able to win future prizes. That is the primary reason why the dead listed in this thread won't ever win the prize.

When did that change then? It used to be that, if previously nominated, they could get the award posthumously.

In 1974, the policy was changed to forbid awarding the prize to the deceased.

Prior to that, a person could still be selected to win if they were alive at the time of nominations of that year. However, nomination applications have never been accepted for the deceased.

Being nominated in a one year does not carry over the subsequent years.

By the way, prior to 1974, only two deceased people had been awarded the prize (1931 literature and 1961 peace), both due to having died between nominations and announcement.

Since 1974, only two more posthumous awards have happened. For the 1996 economics prize, Vickrey died between the announcement and presentation ceremony. Thus, one could argue that Vickrey was actually awarded it when he was still alive. The other case occurred in the 2011 medical prize, where the announcement was made with the committee unaware that the recipient had died just three days prior.
