Kim Jong-un's Popularity Stagnates
There's concern for the North Korean leader today as election results become known. Despite his best efforts to establish himself with the people, the percentage of the vote won by Kim in his district was on a par with the poorest performing candidates across the nation. Those election results in full below:

Rape Culture
So one of my female friends informed me 10 minutes ago that today is international Womens Rights day, or some shit like that, and it sprang a short debate about various women's right issues. Can someone please explain to me the merits of believing in rape culture, cause it just sounds like pure bullshit to me.

Russians to Welcome Crimean Secession?
http://news.yahoo.com/top-lawmaker-russia-welcome-crimea-152337948.html Let's keep this one specific, given that we already have a main thread for the Crisis in Ukraine: 1. Your thoughts on Crimea's stated intention to secede and Russia's warm response, 2. SHOULD Crimea secede, 3. WILL it happen and 4. SHOULD Crimea be considered "Russia," as these demonstrators seem to think?

Why Professors should give the students their midterms and exams back
I've always hated how most professors don't let you look at a midterm or exam after righting it. I'm always convinced that its because they're lazy fucks who want to keep the exam the same every year and don't do it to prevent us from being able to sell said exams to our underclassmen. Below is the list of reasons why I strongly think profs should give students their marked midterms and exams back

To thin the draw or not thin... that is the question...
I think it an added dimension to the on-line game and like the extra dynamics and strategy it affords. Particularly in GB where there is no collusion. Earn your place in the draw or punish a grabber by throwing a solo... all part of the game.

What's the best lesson you've learned in a Diplomacy game?
Game-related lesson, that is. While I'm not big on the forum, I do like reading the game-related threads from time to time. The "Letting your ally win" discussion spurred the above question for me. My answer below.

Gunboat/Press hybrid game
I just thought about the idea of playing a game where the first year is full press through the 1901 builds, and the game turns to gunboat after the fact. It would essentially be a gunboat game that can have crazier openings and break the mold of having very similar 1901 years from game to game. Anyone interested in trying this out?

Letting Your Ally Win
I recently played two PPSC games (a normal world gameID=132877,and a modern gunboat gameID=132764), in both of which a player decided not to attack the leader, resulting the leader to solo and the other coming in second. Do you think letting your ally win is ever acceptable?

An Open Question to Putin33: What Do YOU Want in the World?
What do you want with regards to Eastern-Western Relations? With Putin's intervention in the Crimea and the Ukraine crisis on the whole? Syria, where you and I differ again? Israel/Palestine, where you and I differ again (which I find interesting given that I want them to have their own state and have criticized the Israeli encroachment into the West Bank, but I digress.) If you could have EXACTLY what you wanted in each scenario, snap your fingers and it's done--what would you WANT?

I ask this as it seems to me that you're pretty damn critical of what seems to be the majority of other viewpoints on this site...

krellin, redhouse, abgemacht, myself and others all have pretty diverse viewpoints...

And you seem to disagree with us all, at least in part.

I think it's great you have the courage to pick your own side in a debate...

But because of this, I haven't seen you AGREE with a lot of folks, to be honest...

Hence my question.

Since you always seem to be critical and deconstructive--which, again, I'm not at all saying is a bad thing--I want to hear what you'd actually be FOR in these scenarios, rather than having you (right or wrong) pick apart the responses of others.

In general I'd like the West to mind its own business and stop ruining the world. I'd like the West to stop instigating and propping up color revolutions in the CIS. I'd like them to stop instigating and propping up jihadist insurrections in the Middle East. Just leave people alone, is that so much to ask? What I find ironic is that for as libertarian as this forum claims to be, people are very fond on antagonizing other countries around the world and getting on their sanctimonious soapbox about other countries social systems.

What people in the West fail to appreciate is that most of the rest of the world is heavily burdened with the process of state-building, which by the way took hundreds of years to complete in the West. These countries do not have the luxury of building states at a time when there was no mass politics, there was no international standards of behavior. They do not have the luxury of building states in an organic, evolved way. They have to hurry the process along. Building a state is an incredibly difficult process as it is, and they have to do it as humane, liberal, and democratic way as they can, as quickly as they can, even though the demands of mass politics and liberalism are often, if not usually, at odds with the demands of state building. So you can act self-righteous about how liberal and humane politics in the West is, but this is the result of 400 or so years of bloody evolution, of civil war and wars of expansionism. European states had to go through a very deadly process of conquering local rivals for power before their configuration could be established and before they could extend opportunities for representation that they like to brag about.

So just leave people the hell alone, you're not making these things any better with your constant interventions and your constant lecturing. You're increasing the burden on already overburdened states, to the point of collapse in many cases. You think you're better than everybody else but you're not, you just went through the process earlier.

Because the states rights small government conservatives like Krellin would enjoy it if foreign countries told us what to do and how to live. These are the same people who object to signing innocuous human rights treaties and refuse to accede to the ICC.

"and the Middle Eat prior to US invovlement was all peace, harmony and love"

Never said that, although the M.E. was largely pacified under Ottoman rule, the point is intervening in their affairs isn't going to lead to better outcomes and is just going to slow development.

Funny, the people you get a hard on for violate human rights on a fairly regular basis. You demented, perverse world view is sickening, Putin. Seems to me the West has a far greater standard of living than your blessed east...

I think it's difficult for the West to understand a few key differences in perspective.

Most easterners understand that life is not always peachy-keen in the west, but feel that it would be inappropriate for them to involve themselves in Western affairs. That Westerners disagree, sometimes over the barrel of a rifle, tends to confound easterners.

Furthermore, if an effective world leadership had to be elected, America would probably not be people's first choice, not globally. America has plenty of problems. Life is far better in other countries, the Nordic states in particular. If there were an actual election for World Police, America would not win that election. Most of the countries that probably would make the international short list are mostly disinterested in the job, which should tell you something.

American intervention in foreign affairs tends to follow economic capitol. This is largely transparent to easterners.

One other thing, is that Americans tend to be baffled by Eastern non-interest in actual representative democracy, to the extent that it reduces the effectiveness of Americans to successfully intervene in foreign affairs.

What confuses me is why Putin33 disagrees with me so often, because I think the exact same as him in the first reply.

I mean, I play devil's advocate regularly myself, and even though people assume it's my opinion even if I say it isn't all day long, it isn't.

But this doesn't seem to be the case with Putin, yet he always seems to assume we're not agreeing...

Much like krellin in that aspect.
Putin's response is great and this particular paragraph is really strong. +1.

"What people in the West fail to appreciate is that most of the rest of the world is heavily burdened with the process of state-building, which by the way took hundreds of years to complete in the West.
