Kim Jong-un's Popularity Stagnates
There's concern for the North Korean leader today as election results become known. Despite his best efforts to establish himself with the people, the percentage of the vote won by Kim in his district was on a par with the poorest performing candidates across the nation. Rape Culture
So one of my female friends informed me 10 minutes ago that today is international Womens Rights day, or some shit like that, and it sprang a short debate about various women's right issues. SHOULD Crimea be considered "Russia," as these demonstrators seem to think?

Why Professors should give the students their midterms and exams back
I've always hated how most professors don't let you look at a midterm or exam after righting it. I'm always convinced that its because they're lazy fucks who want to keep the exam the same every year and don't do it to prevent us from being able to sell said exams to our underclassmen. Below is the list of reasons why I strongly think profs should give students their marked midterms and exams back
Fasces349 (0 DX)

(+2)
1. The single period in the entirety of high school where I learnt the most was the day I got my accounting exam back. I spent the next hour arguing with my teacher over the answers to the questions that I got wrong (it was also the first time all year that I looked at our textbook). I'm not too surprised that the only time I've gotten above a 90 so far in university was on the midterm for intro to financial accounting, a mark I achieved without ever attending class or studying. Basic accounting is almost permanently engrained into my brain simply because of the level of comprehension required to be able to argue with a teacher over the answer to a particular multiple choice question (it was a fully multiple choice exam) is far higher then the one required to answer a question.

While I'm not saying let students argue for marks (though I would strongly support that as well), my argument here is simply for the learning experience; If you do surprisingly poorly on a test or exam, it may not always be clear what your mistake(s) were, and by refusing to let students looked at marked exams/tests you are depriving them of what I consider to be the most valuable learning opportunity: learning from ones mistakes.

2. Some students like to use their midterms to study for exams, I don't cause I only study for classes that I'm failing.

3. Today, something happened that increased my passion for this argument. A couple of weeks ago we had a midterm that I thought went particularly well, however when the result went up on our online gradebook, I got a 28. Given that I'm failing 2/4 classes this semester and am already on academic probation, I decided to ask the prof where I went wrong at the end of class last Friday, to which the prof said come see me during office hours. Meeting with the prof today, it turned out I got an 82 and the prof entered my grade into the computer wrong.

This is the second time this year I have been wrongfully failed and when confronting the prof/TA they realised it was a mistake. To date there have been 4 different midterms and exams that I have failed (not counting the above one). Is it possible that these aren't the only two instances where a prof fucking has resulted in a wrongful failure on my part? I have no way of knowing. By forcing profs to give results back, it decreases the chances of human error on the part of whomever marks the test/exam negatively impacting the grade of the student.

So above is my argument for why I want to be given my results back, is there any good reason people have for why profs are justified in depriving us at looking at our results?

I always gave my exams back. Usually students are lazy fucks who never bother getting them from me. I was obligated to keep all of their paperwork for a year before shredding it. I had reams and reams of old tests and papers every year.

I can't think of a single college class in which I didn't receive my midterm back. Most profs were also willing to show me my final exam too, when I asked at the end of the semester.

Yeah, giving them back is a must didactically IMO. The problem with Fasces is however that he doesn't read the text books and skips the classes. No amount of test review can counter that and hence I'd say he should stop whining about being on academic probation and start putting some actual energy into his study.

Always get grades back. Don't say most professors if you don't know if that's the case.
Draugnar (0 DX)
07 Mar 14 UTC
@Steephie - First, he was talking professors (which means college, not primary or secondary school) and second he said *midtermsand exams*, not grades. Of course you get your grade, but that doesn't mean you get a marked up exam showing you *which* questions you missed.

Now, I must say that even with my online courses, I got the midterm or exam "back" in the sense that I got a check sheet of what was right and wrong and comments on any short answer or essay questions from the prof.

"I always gave my exams back. Usually students are lazy fucks who never bother getting them from me. I was obligated to keep all of their paperwork for a year before shredding it. I had reams and reams of old tests and papers every year."
Would you give them back in class, or would you give it back only to those who bothered asking? Cause I'll grant I'm too much of a lazy fuck to ask the profs who never gave it back for me to look at them.

"Most profs were also willing to show me my final exam too, when I asked at the end of the semester."
I've never bothered asking, I'll try it at the end of the semester this time.

"Always get grades back. Don't say most professors if you don't know if that's the case."
ok in my experience most profs don't give them back. Which granted two years of Uni isn't a large sample size, I'm just complaining about the ones that don't.

'I'd say he should stop whining about being on academic probation and start putting some actual energy into his study."
I'm whining about profs not giving tests back, not about my marks. I fully accept being on probation.

I've had instructors (not professors, but aside from the type of degree, same difference) that treated their classes like a college course that didn't give midterms back, and they've entered the grade wrongly in the gradebook. Fortunately, we see our grades after our winter break, which is a month before report cards come out and transcripts are finalized, so we have time to correct it.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
07 Mar 14 UTC
Sorry, I meant exams/midterms, not grades.
I know he said professor, but I didn't say "I", if we're going to be technical :)

If we're going to be practical, I know of many people in college who get all their tests back and I can't think of one except OP that doesn't.

I admit that wasn't my finest English though :)

"but aside from the type of degree" A HS diploma isn't a degree.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
07 Mar 14 UTC
The type of degree the instructor holds, not the student. I believe each of them at my school (no clue about publics) have a masters of some kind, or at least those that don't don't have classes but they work in administration (where there are others with multiple doctorates, so it's diverse).
Draugnar (0 DX)
07 Mar 14 UTC
Gotcha. Sorry I misunderstood, bo. And I actually think it's where they teach that makes that determination, not what degree they hold. I had a high school physics teacher with a masters in physics and a second in education. Perfectly qualified to be a professor but preferred teaching at the high school level.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

Sure, some choose to stay at lower levels than they're qualified to teach at, but most go as high as they can go.

Yes I'd give them back in class and usually what happened is a bunch of people would not show up that day and then not bother showing up to my office to pick theirs up from then to the end of the quarter. I'd even remind students that I still had them, to no avail.

semck83 (229 D(B))

Like most people here, I've never had a single professor who didn't give midterms back. Most keep finals but let you look at them. (The rest gave them back).

My experience on the other side of this relationship is almost exactly like Putin's. *Most* students collected their exams, but a bunch didn't, and I did end up with reams of old exams (and quizzes).

Finally, @Draug, most properly, "Professor" is a title only found at a (four-year) college or university, and it is higher than Instructor. Almost universally, it is a job held by Ph.D.'s (or the corresponding professional doctorate), but there are exceptions. On the other hand, an instructor is sure not to mind if you call him professor, and it's sometimes appropriate as a mark of respect.
Draugnar (0 DX)
08 Mar 14 UTC
I attend a four year school and about 25-30% of my professors have PhDs. The rest have masters. The school requires a masters but also requires workplace experience for courses in the program's major (I.e. non-electives). So the only PhD professors were psychology or other electives. The management courses I took were run by experienced upper management at major corporations and even one retired CEO.
Draugnar (0 DX)
08 Mar 14 UTC
Oh, and the school insists we call them.professor.
steephie22 (182 D(S))
09 Mar 14 UTC
Retired CEO became professor (or "professor")?

... Isn't that a job change, not retirement? And who goes to professor after CEO? I mean, I had a teacher who was an active vet (I believe you're technically vet for life, hence active) and is now teacher voluntarily which is a bit of a downgrade, but CEO to teacher...

I suppose a change of heart, but I still don't follow the retired part.
Draugnar (0 DX)
09 Mar 14 UTC
Taught part time to give back. There are even organizations to mentor small businesses that use former CEOs as the mentors. Retired doesn't mean dead.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
09 Mar 14 UTC

A professor is a title given by an institute of higher learning. If you work at a research university, there's almost a 100% chance you need a PhD to become a professor. If you work at a teaching college, then it's very likely that many professors will have masters and often industry experience. I don't think that makes them less of a professor, it just means they aren't equipped to do research in their field.
Draugnar (0 DX)
09 Mar 14 UTC
Thanks, abge. The school I attend is focused on producing workforce ready grads with a focus on management and continuing on to get an MBA.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
09 Mar 14 UTC
Now, with that being said, every one of my classes was taught with someone holding a PhD (and about 25% of the classes were actually taught with two doctors) and I think that was of great benefit to me as a student.
Draugnar (0 DX)
09 Mar 14 UTC
My psych class last quarter was taught by a PhD, but my management class was taught by the CEO with an MBA and I honestly felt I got more out of the management class, although the two classes actually worked well together as the psych class was about leadership and motivation.
semck83 (229 D(B))
09 Mar 14 UTC
Abge makes good points -- I was focusing too much on the norm at research universities. I do think a Ph.D. makes a huge positive difference for most fields, and I sometimes encourage people to take this into account when evaluating colleges/departments.

Draug also has a good point that in applied fields, there's something to be said for practical experience, so that a mix could be useful in a handful of fields.
Draugnar (0 DX)
09 Mar 14 UTC
I would argue that your "most" and "some" are a bit unbalanced. I'm fact, I would say that if a person plans to have a life outside academia and doesn't intend to be a scientist, doctor, or lawyer (I.e., intends to have a normal job in the private business sector, the majority of jobs requiring am advanced degree) then the practical experience university (management schools for instance) will serve you better and that this isn't just "some" but may well be "most".

Gunboat/Press hybrid game
I just thought about the idea of playing a game where the first year is full press through the 1901 builds, and the game turns to gunboat after the fact. It would essentially be a gunboat game that can have crazier openings and break the mold of having very similar 1901 years from game to game. Anyone interested in trying this out?
