Kim Jong-un's Popularity Stagnates
There's concern for the North Korean leader today as election results become known. Despite his best efforts to establish himself with the people, the percentage of the vote won by Kim in his district was on a par with the poorest performing candidates across the nation. Those election results in full below:

Rape Culture
So one of my female friends informed me 10 minutes ago that today is international Womens Rights day, or some shit like that, and it sprang a short debate about various women's right issues. Can someone please explain to me the merits of believing in rape culture, cause it just sounds like pure bullshit to me.

Russians to Welcome Crimean Secession?
http://news.yahoo.com/top-lawmaker-russia-welcome-crimea-152337948.html Let's keep this one specific, given that we already have a main thread for the Crisis in Ukraine: 1. Your thoughts on Crimea's stated intention to secede and Russia's warm response, 2. SHOULD Crimea secede, 3. WILL it happen and 4. SHOULD Crimea be considered "Russia," as these demonstrators seem to think?

Why Professors should give the students their midterms and exams back
I've always hated how most professors don't let you look at a midterm or exam after righting it. I'm always convinced that its because they're lazy fucks who want to keep the exam the same every year and don't do it to prevent us from being able to sell said exams to our underclassmen. Below is the list of reasons why I strongly think profs should give students their marked midterms and exams back

To thin the draw or not thin... that is the question...
I think it an added dimension to the on-line game and like the extra dynamics and strategy it affords. Particularly in GB where there is no collusion. Earn your place in the draw or punish a grabber by throwing a solo... all part of the game.

Game-related lesson, that is. While I'm not big on the forum, I do like reading the game-related threads from time to time. The "Letting your ally win" discussion spurred the above question for me. My answer below.

Gunboat/Press hybrid game
I just thought about the idea of playing a game where the first year is full press through the 1901 builds, and the game turns to gunboat after the fact. It would essentially be a gunboat game that can have crazier openings and break the mold of having very similar 1901 years from game to game. Anyone interested in trying this out?

An Open Question to Putin33: What Do YOU Want in the World?
What do you want with regards to Eastern-Western Relations? With Putin's intervention in the Crimea and the Ukraine crisis on the whole? Syria, where you and I differ again? Israel/Palestine, where you and I differ again (which I find interesting given that I want them to have their own state and have criticized the Israeli encroachment into the West Bank, but I digress.) If you could have EXACTLY what you wanted in each scenario, snap your fingers and it's done--what would you WANT?

18 Year Old Girl Sues Parents

This is clearly Obama's fault. As always, krellin presents a rock-solid case.
I'd like to find out if her allegations of abusive parents are substantiated before passing judgment on this case. I see nothing in that article or the source article to indicate anything one way or another.

I know, krellin. I am 100% agreeing with you. I've never read the constitution, but I have watch several episodes of House of Cards and I'm rather certain this is grounds for impeachment.

In fact, just the other day I had a second helping of ice cream even though I'm supposed to be eating healthier. Why would Obama let me do this? Clearly he knows what I was doing because the NSA tracks me at all times.

I'm with you all the way, krellin. I have no sense of personal responsibility and it's all Obama's fault.

Just curious if the case was a farce why is a prominent attorney and family friend bankrolling the suit? Sounds like the rich parents had a temper tantrum over a boyfriend they didn't like and stopped paying for her high school and kicked her out of the home, while also freezing her accounts and repossessing her car.

Callous, horrible parents. Rich people are strange.

They sound like awful parents, and maybe she's doing this just to humiliate them.

On the other hand, being an awful parent does not change the age of adulthood, nor entitle your offspring to more of your property than they would otherwise get. (Well, actually, she'd probably have a better case if she just sued them for abuse straight-up; she'd probably still lose, but at least there would be a coherent theory of damages to apply).

"When Canning complained to the school about the alleged longtime abuse she had endured, the school called child services and her parents, in retaliation, then cut her off and directed her college funds elsewhere.

Rachel Canning says she doesn't think returning home is a viable option, nor does her therapist."

That should set off some serious warning flags for people taking the parents' side in this. You'd have to believe that not only is the girl lying about everything, she's arrogant enough to believe she can get away with it to lawyers and a judge, she's insidious enough to have already gotten away with it to a therapist and the family *hosting her and paying for the lawsuit*, and you'd ALSO have to believe that a lawyer is either running with the case knowing it's full of shit OR is being totally bamboozled by a mastermind... 18 year old.

She'd effectively have to be a sociopath for all of that to be the case, and it's more likely that she's actually being abused than it is that she's a sociopath fooling everyone.

"On the other hand, being an awful parent does not change the age of adulthood, nor entitle your offspring to more of your property than they would otherwise get. "

NJ law is apparently different on the issue of age and dependency.

http://www.divorcenet.com/states/new_jersey/emancipation_of_a_minor_child_in_nj

"Are Children Automatically Emancipated When They Turn 18?
No. Many people assume that turning 18 results in automatic emancipation. This is not so. There’s no set age that will trigger automatic emancipation in New Jersey.
Reaching the age of 18 provides the court with prima facie (Latin for “at first sight”) or presumptive proof of emancipation; but this presumption can be defeated with evidence that the 18-year-old child has not yet reached a truly independent status. For example, a court may not emancipate a child over the age of 18 if he or she is in still in college and relies on parental support, or if there is proof of a pre-existing disability that prevents a child over the age of 18 from gaining complete independence."

Based on that I think she has a case.
Randomizer (722 D)

The therapist doesn't want the girl to go back to her parents when it will reduce the chances of getting paid for years.
...somehow I don't think that's the most likely explanation.
Putin33 (111 D)
07 Mar 14 UTC
Why would her not having any money lead to more payments?
semck83 (229 D(B))
07 Mar 14 UTC
@Putin,

Good find.

@PE, I don't think the girl is lying. I just don't think that her situation entitles her to what she asks; and are you actually suggesting that a lawyer who's being paid won't take a weak case? I certainly wish that were true, but I fear it's nowhere close. (Now, if he were on contingency, you might have an argument).

Putin's find shows that there is at least the shadow of a legal basis for this case in NJ (bizarrely enough), but that doesn't mean it's a strong case, or that we need to support it as a reasonable law.
She isn't entitled to her parents paying for her college. But as putin said, something tells me a top notch lawyer wouldn't put his own ass and money on the line if he didn't think he had a case. I think if there was a specific fund for her college they may absolutely have a case. There is a lot unknown, at least when I read the articles about this. I think Semck's offhand dismissal of her case with a lack of facts is very strange for the lawyer we know he is. She could very well have a case.
semck83 (229 D(B))
07 Mar 14 UTC
Who says her lawyer is top notch? There have been a couple references to that on this thread, but neither story linked seems to say anything about it. What am I missing?

As for dismissing the case out of hand -- I guess the judge is guilty of it too?

http://www.cnn.com/video/data/2.0/video/crime/2014/03/05/bts-student-sues-parents-new-jersey.pool.html
Putin33 (111 D)
07 Mar 14 UTC
The case was not dismissed, a trial date was set. That's sort of the opposite of being dismissed. The judge did not order the parents to pay immediate financial support.

Her attorney is separate from the person who is financing her legal fees. The person giving her money for legal fees is a "prominent Morris County attorney, John Inglesino".

semck83 (229 D(B))

Thanks for the clarification.

I agree it was not dismissed. That said, the judge shows marked skepticism about the step being asked for, which is what I also showed. (To be clear, I did not -- after you posted the NJ law, anyway -- dismiss the case as certainly unwinnable. I merely disagreed with PE that we had evidence that it was strong, and also stated disagreement with the NJ law that allows it to be tenable at all).

Hahaha I read that article. It reminded me of my own situation to a tee.

My mom kicked me out shortly after my 18th birthday, while I was still in high school, (though, if you ask her, I left voluntarily, just like the story). Shit was rough, but I finished HS (barely) - and not once did I consider suing her.

I don't think this is about liberal/conservative, I do agree it is about an entitled little brat.
