Well, I just started playing and also liked the spanish, but after that I kinda had fun with the duke of Holland, Dirk van Holland or whatever. Starts out underaged, his mother is in the line of succession of Saxony, so you can do a lot of plotting. Tell me if you find something fun.

If you're stuck on ideas of who the play, I'd recommend playing on noob island (ireland), try to unify the island and then form Britannia

I could give duke of Holland a try... I'm not a noob though and Ireland was fun the first time but no.

I just started as the doux of Tyrnovo and my wife is the heir of a 72 year old emperor. It's around the 1080's.

Crusader Kings 2 is hilarious sometimes.

Conspicuously absent from this list is one of my favorites, Imad ad-Din Zengi, one of the first serious opponents of the Crusaders. He starts off in a very precarious position, surrounded by more powerful enemies (both Christian and Muslim). Check out Syria circa 1127 or so.

Thanks Tolstoy, I actually found that list already but after trying a few I realise it's more information about characters and what to do with them. I don't find them very fun so far but maybe that's just me.

Also what are things to hold in mind when you play with Muslims as opposed to Christians?

And does anyone know characters sort of similar to the Spanish king brothers? Because I can't exactly put my finger on it but especially Castille and Léon were a blast to me.

The de Hautevilles of southern Italy & Sicily are lots of fun, but they're all united under one ruler in the 1066 start (Robert Guiscard, which severely overstates the degree of unity there was among the Normans at this time).

As for playing Muslims, the only real difference is the fixed succession law and decadence (which you deal with by imprisoning all your brothers and nephews). You spend a good chunk of your time imprisoning landless relatives, which gets old fast IMHO.
