Krellin, I would refer you to the video someone posted the other day. Trickle-down economics as Reagan advocated is a large portion of where the wealth disparity came from, IMHO.

Government handouts that encourage people to stay in poverty rather than work their way up is the real problem. Pop out another kid: get a bigger handout! We should start reducing benefits everytime someone on welfare has another fucking brat.

No, but I sure as hell wouldn't give them *money*. Soup kitchens exist and could get that money instead. If everything they got was minimal quality but free, they'd be stuck living a boring fucking life with no money for extras and no beer and no steak and no cigarettes and no put and no crack... Instead, they'd be given a room with a matress on the floor, a bed, a common bathroom with stalls and showers (like a TA Travel Center has) and three squares. Think workhouses of the 19th Century.

That kind of exists. You have housing assistance, soup kitchens, all these things. Very imperfect, but a step in that direction. But I like your idea, of guaranteeing to everyone a basic life level. There is another system of encouraging work. The earned income tax credit. It's great, providing hard cash if you earned yourself money, and providing a large incentive to make more, as for a while, the credit rises with income. Completely crazy, in a way, but it actually seems to work.
