SAG awards are awarded by actors, not the entire industry. So using it as a thermometer of "talent" isn't exactly an accurate measurement. And the Lifetime Achievment Award is for their entire body of work, so the most prolific and popular actors who have been in bot major screen mediums are the ones who get it for the sheer volume of what they have produced. Clint had Rawhide. Asner had Lou Grant. Garner had Rockford Files and Maverick. This award isn't about acting as a skill but, as I said, the entire body of their work and their contribution to the entertainment industry. But the Lifetime Achievement Award is for *lifetime* achievment, not acting and in no way implies the greatest actor ever.
I went to see Hereafter this evening. I was shocked at how bad (and boring) the film was. There was some good acting and some nice scenes but generally I felt the movie dragged and could have been so much better.
I felt the same for Gran Torino - it was such trash.
I do like Clint Eastwood though and I thought Million Dollar Baby was great. Hilary Swank has a golden touch though.
I don't know how to enter this argument, so I'll just dive in headfirst. In my opinion, Clint Eastwood is the greatest actor of all time.
Man With No Name Series (A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly): Excellent. Some of the best westerns ever
Unforgiven: Same as above. One of the best westerns ever.
Dirty Harry Series: First two films were excellent, became progressively worse starting with the third film. Final film bottomed out at the low end of average.
Heartbreak Ridge: Eastwood held his own despite the terrible script and terrible actors around him. I would say the film is the high end of average.
Gran Torino: In my opinion, the best film ever. Great script, great actors, great everything.
Those are the only Clint Eastwood movies I've seen.
"But the Lifetime Achievement Award is for *lifetime* achievment, not acting and in no way implies the greatest actor ever."
Heh, nice backpedaling. You're in my face about the award being given to directors as well as actors, now the story is "yeah it's for actors but it's not about talent". Riight. Whatever. Evidently your fact-checking didn't pull through for you that time.
I'm not the only one who hasn't expressed (the apparently obligatory) luvluv for your boy Clinty on here, LJ. Why do people have to like what you like? Do you normally ask for people's opinions and then tell them to go kill themselves if they dare disagree with you?
@Putin - I stand by my statement that the award is given for the individual's entire body of work and their contribution to the entertainment industry. With his many years as actor, director, producer, writer, and even composer, Clint earned the award for the sheer volume of his work and for his popularity, not for his acting. Do you really think Shirley Temple was a great actress? The award is about contribution, not great acting. Now show me this mass of acting awards he has won because I still only find two real ones and they are from very minor organizations. And show me the academy award for acting. Oh wait, your initial assertion of that has been proven wrong as well.
You don't have to enjoy his movies. I'm fine with that. But casting aspersions his way and our way because we enjoy the fun westerns and bang-bang cop flicks by claiming he has been given all these awards and you don't see it is just bogus.
"The award is about contribution, not great acting. Now show me this mass of acting awards he has won because I still only find two real ones and they are from very minor organizations. And show me the academy award for acting. Oh wait, your initial assertion of that has been proven wrong as well."
And look all those 'directors' who got the award, oh wait, it's given to actors. You lose.
"Now show me this mass of acting awards he has won because I still only find two real ones and they are from very minor organizations."
Because you disqualified half of his awards from meaning anything. And it's not as if every two-bit actor gets nominated for best actor oscars. Of course if you stack the deck in an argument you will 'win' and then congratulate yourself for the victory.
I watched the Enforcer on Television last night (the third in the Dirty Harry films). I must admit - not one of his finest. Ridiculously bad actually. As I was watching it I found myself thinking "maybe Putin" is right.
I did answer this question. I misspoke when I said academy award winning actor (he's an even more overrated director, my bad). He's been nominated for two and many other awards, and has won acting awards - including a lifetime achievement award from the screen actors guild.
If you're gonna watch a Dirty Harry movie, watch the first (or second, preferably first) one for God's sake. The third, fourth, and fifth Dirty Harrys are not Eastwood's finest films.
Or don't watch Dirty Harry at all. Watch "Unforgiven" or "Gran Torino". Until you do, you cannot pass fair judgement.
Could I fairly judge Tom Cruise by just watching "Cocktail"?
@TMW don't me wrong. I am a huge fan of Clint Eastwood, but I can understand where Putin is coming from. I also like Tom Cruise, but he has his shockers. He ruined Valkerie (otherwise it was a half-decent film).
@TMW: Yes, you could fairly judge Tom Cruise by just watching "Cocktail."
One of my favorite reviews ever: "In _Vanilla Sky_, Tom Cruise plays an attractive young man who can get anything he wants. Somehow he manages to convey the impression that he thinks this requires serious acting."
Sorry, it's just that he's my favorite actor, and I might get a little aggressive on a thread like this. Nothing personal.
@ pastoralan
I don't like Tom Cruise very much, but I will say he did a nice job in "Top Gun". He did alright in "Knight and Day", but the rest of that movie was absolute garbage. Those are the only Cruise movies I've seen.
I enjoyed all three Mission: Impossible movies. One of the few series where each was truly unique and had a completely different feel. Ethan Hunt is an interesting character and has grown from movie to movie and Cruise has played him well over all.
I forgot "A Few Good Men". That's probably my favorite legal drama. That's definitely one of Cruise's (and Demi Moore's) finer movies, even though I thought he (they) was (were) slightly overshadowed by Jack Nicholson's excellent performance.
That sucks. I don't really watch rented movies anymore; they frustrate the crap out of me. I just flip on AMC and 7 times out of ten it will be a decent movie. I love AMC. I also love Rambo week on Spike.
(in case anyone is wondering, the channels mentioned above are American channels)
Why are they always 5 minute phases, never 10? 10 minutes is so much better, actually gives you time to think, or get up for a bathroom break, if and when necessary. Not to mention, agree to finalise, and it's just as fast as a 5 minute game.
what do you all think of an alliance between italy, france and austria?? austria and italy probably has to face a juggernaut and france has to face germany...
In classic Diplomacy, I am incapable of getting anything going with Russia. England always comes in from the north, Turkey from the south, and Austria and Germany usually aren't too friendly. Any ideas as to how to survive as Russia?
I'm considering joining some games where players have left. That way I might practice moves in cornered situations and also shake up the game a bit, making it more interesting – I think. Is this appreciated by the others players that have been abandoned by someone CDing, or will I get accused of massaging my rating by aiming at a cheap survive?
We are meeting at 10:00 this Sunday at Dice Dojo. That is at 5550 Broadway on the North side of Chicago. A couple of players had to drop out. Anyone interested, please post here.

I think it would be useful to have an additional chat tab where your own country is listed, in which you can talk to yourself. Not only would it introduce a new dimension to the game for schizophrenics, you would also be able to take notes about the game and remind yourself to do things.
