Bug check?
Well, I'm not sure what happened (although I'm guessing some save error so it wont' show up in any logs) but I somehow ended up with an army in Naples rather than the fleet that I thought I'd ordered.

The Golden Age of Diplomacy
Does anyone else find reading Sharp's "The Game of Diplomacy" really depressing? The level of dedication and analysis that he presents in the book would never be found today. Does anyone even talk about diplomacy theory anymore, or are we just left to reading relics of the past?

Homework this week
Your homework this week is to speak to an octogenarian. We won't have them for very much longer and so I think it's important for young people to meet these guys.

Hippies aren't quite the same. They're uptight in a way that the people older than them weren't.

And another thing Swearengen you do not live up to your namesake. Not at all.

And, yeah, I'm sorta sick of depressed people. so what? If the dude wanted to kill himself and he achieved his goal, whats everyone so upset about? He wanted to be dead. Good for him. Can we stop moaning and crying and masturbating over his shrine and just move on for fucks sake?

'And, yeah, I'm sorta sick of depressed people. so what? If the dude wanted to kill himself and he achieved his goal, whats everyone so upset about?' - well people who knew and liked him are upset that he was killed by a preventable disease like depression. I guess it really depends on whether you believe in free will, or that invisible diseases like depression can kill just as readily as cancer - the fact that they are both genetically programmed, both have environmental risk factors, both have unreliable drug treatments, both have been shown to be reduced by talking therapy (though cancer survival rates may go up from 3 to 5 years, and only in cases where there was no drug option available, that's still 2 years extra life, while not being anything like advertised in the stupid newspapers...)

You know what dirge, imagine you just said 'i'm sorta sick of cancerous people. so what? if the dudes body wanted to kill him and it achieved it's goal, what's everyone so upset about?' - seriously, there is no need for your whinging to be a blight on the world, when you could instead join in the fight against this disease (yep, cause talking to your friends and taking their feelings into account can help... against both cancer and depression)

Canned, labeled, sold, and shoved down our throats by Eli Lilly. Yes I believe in free will. You talk about depression like it is some kind entity that is separate from free will. In the real world you cannot separate choice from the conceptual entity of depression. Your drug company brochure falls short.

People sometimes kill themselves. There is such a thing as mood, yes, and it can be influenced by a vast array of factors, social, chemical, biological, seasonal. Known factors and unknown factors. The concept of depression crosses all these lines. It is an artificial construct in which we throw a huge amount of behavior into one safe sanitized conceptual box. It makes people feel better. It probably makes you feel better to believe that Mr. Swartz died for one reason and one reason only: the disease of depression.

It must be very emotionally jarring to imagine that he made a conscious choice for whatever reasons. We might speculate but we'll never know for sure why. But we do know that in that moment he want to be dead. And unlike some people he had the will to carry it out. Maybe it was a gigantic fuck you to all his fans.

Whatever. One less jackass on the planet. So what.

Deny it all you want, dirge, but chronic depression (ala a manic-depressive) is a chemical imbalance in the brain and not a choice one makes. You just prove that your mental illness is asshole-hypocrisy with every passing post.
dirge (768 D(B))

To be fair, MIT and the prosecutors went way overboard in his case, especially when he basically returned or destroyed all the data. But, you know, like I said, he should have had a better lawyer.
krellin (80 DX)
16 Jan 14 UTC
Isn't it hilarious when fucktards and morons will acknowledge without question that the ingestion of chemicals can radically alter ones behavior (alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy, acid, etc etc etc) but then they same fucktard morons will deny that a chemical imbalance in the brain can be responsible for behavioral changes.
dirge confirmed shittier human being than ever imaginable
dirge (768 D(B))
16 Jan 14 UTC
Mr. Draugnar, I sincerely believe assholeness is not an illness.

You failed to demonstrate any hypocrisy.

Most importantly, you utterly failed to comprehend my post. You have a simple minded binary understanding of the concept of depression. You believe either it is a "chemical imbalance" and anyone who doesn't agree with your child like belief has to believe the opposite.

Not so. The world, and especially the human mind is not that simple.

Sorry to break it to you.

I choose to have manic depression. I wanted that. Girls choose to get raped, poor kids choose to get shitty education, and squirrels choose to get hit by cars.

Don't know why you all are denying that. It's pretty obvious.

dirge accusing people of child-like belief? lol His clear lack of understanding of what he is vomiting on about exactly the type of psycho-babble you expect from a child that recently read an article suddenly thinks he has some nuanced understanding of something...when in fact he knows shit.
dirge (768 D(B))

Someone choosing to take their own life has nothing in common with bo-sox's assertion that "Girls choose to get raped." Rape by definition is non-volitional.
dirge (768 D(B))
16 Jan 14 UTC
I guess you're all upset for some reason. But, you know, I'm basically right. Yes i'm being an asshole, but, still I'm right. I never said it wasn't chemical. In fact I specifically pointed out that chemical and biological factors effect mood.

Sorry to piss everyone off so much.

And one can make the argument that people who are otherwise healthy and successful don't choose to take their lives unless they are not sane.

Dirge,

How old are you?

I'm beginning to think that what you really require is a hug, and a beer.

I'm not really into man-hugs, but tell you what - next time you're in town I'll spring for a pitcher of beer. There truly is something to be said for chillaxing
dirge (768 D(B))
16 Jan 14 UTC
krellin - your statement is in fact circular. Saying that someone committing suicide is ipso facto proof of mental illness AND said mental illness caused the suicide is a circular argument.

And thanks Swearengen but I've been off beer for 8 weeks.
no, it isn't... if X causes Y and Y happens, arguing that it happened because of X isn't circular
steephie22 (182 D(S))
16 Jan 14 UTC
Indeed. And krellin didn't even go that far, did he? He just said that an otherwise healthy and succesful being killing himself is not sane.

Last but not least, what does it matter? It's a valid argument.

He could be doing it for 15 minutes of fame or something though.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
16 Jan 14 UTC
@'It must be very emotionally jarring to imagine that he made a conscious choice for whatever reasons. ' - not emotionally jarring at all. I believe people should have a right to die, but free will is a kinda weird abstract concept - exactly what you call my view on depression - fortunately i'm able to see that both concepts are useful descriptions and neither needs to be false despite sometimes seeming contradictory.

What is emotional jarring is hearing someone claim they are glad a disease killed someone - i can see you imlying his will was free (ie not affected by chemistry) and that he was to weak to keep himself alive - so he took his life and that is good. Survival of the fittest, yeah, you're glad because he is dead. And that makes you an asshole.

I may also be annoyed because you made me +1 Krellin... Someone i've muted on and off for years.

Again, cancer is a part of you body, your bio-chemical makeup, and when it kills you that sucks. Depression is a part of you mind, also your bio-chemicap makeup, and when it kills you that sucks.

Feature Idea
So, I play a lot of live games, and I make a lot of them. I would love an option that would let players make games where any NMR in the first year is an instant cancel. So, that way there's no situation where a Germany NMR's and England/France/Russia take advantage and go on to become monster powers.

I (at the suggestion of a forum member, who's name I forget but will hopefully identify themselves), just read the first three books in the foundation series by Isaac Asimov. After calibrating my block list by reading through a recent gun control debate thread, I'd like to ask forum dwellers for their take on this series, or at least the premise.
