gunboat non-anon
it just dawned on me(duh) that if you play gunboat non-anon you can still send PM's to people...going against the actual rules---Is there a way to stop this?

Bug check?
Well, I'm not sure what happened (although I'm guessing some save error so it wont' show up in any logs) but I somehow ended up with an army in Naples rather than the fleet that I thought I'd ordered.

webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=133398

I can guarantee you that 1) I had no intention of getting a fleet in Naples (this is a clear cut case of nonsense from a Diplomacy standpoint) and 2) that I didn't miss the turn.

I'm guessing you're going to say I just misentered the order, but it doesn't hurt to ask for a look see. It's a 24 hour game, so there's a little time
Draugnar (0 DX)

Well, first you say you got an army when you intended a fleet then you say you didn't intend for a fleet. Sounds like you don't know what you want and don't remember what you left it at.

It's a typo, you goofball. That's pretty clear. Nice try though

Please feel free to email the mods, but the reality is there isn't much we can do.

Unless you have some proof that your orders were processed wrong, there isn't much to check. All the logs are going to show the order that was processed.

In the future, some things you can do to avoid mistakes:

Make sure your scrollwheel isn't accidentally changing orders.

Finalize your moves and then check them over.

Be careful when playing from multiple computers; especially on mobile phones, which may accidentally resubmit old orders.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

Yeah, and a typo is the most likely issue with order entry aswell... unfortunately.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

And what do the logs show about changed orders? Only the saved values, not things entered in the form and then changed....
Ogion (3882 D)
20 Jan 14 UTC
I think it didn't save. Two armies is the default right? (The FAQ on this says to post in forum, not email mods which I confess seems strange to me)
Chaqa (3971 D(B))

If you don't enter orders, you won't get any builds.
Numbat (584 D(S))
20 Jan 14 UTC
This generally only happens to people with less than 101 D and/or less than 20 games played. (I'm quite sure that something like that has happened to most of us in our earlier games and eventually we realize that we need to wait for pages to be updated, check saved/ready status, etc.)

Hi Ogion, here are the order logs, saved exactly as they enter the server:

Time: Jan 17 2014 18:50:00 (UTC+0)
[{"id": "44965800", "unitID": "2917614", "type": "Move", "toTerrID": "15", "fromTerrID": "", "viaConvoy": "No"}, {"id": "44965801", "unitID": "2917616", "type": "Move", "toTerrID": "10", "fromTerrID": "", "viaConvoy": "No"}]

Time: Jan 18 2014 16:01:48 (UTC+0)
[{"id": "44986532", "unitID": null, "type": "Build Army", "toTerrID": "11", "fromTerrID": "", "viaConvoy": ""}]

Time: Jan 18 2014 16:02:17 (UTC+0)
[{"id": "44986531", "unitID": null, "type": "Build Army", "toTerrID": "12", "fromTerrID": "", "viaConvoy": ""}, {"id": "44986532", "unitID": null, "type": "Build Army", "toTerrID": "11", "fromTerrID": "", "viaConvoy": ""}]

Time: Jan 19 2014 04:34:03 (UTC+0)
[{"id": "44986531", "unitID": null, "type": "Build Army", "toTerrID": "12", "fromTerrID": "", "viaConvoy": ""}, {"id": "44986532", "unitID": null, "type": "Build Army", "toTerrID": "11", "fromTerrID": "", "viaConvoy": ""}]

I can't tell you what the issue was, but based on these logs I can tell you for sure the problem didn't happen on the server, so there's not much we can do :(
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
20 Jan 14 UTC
(Note these aren't the saved orders, but the raw logs of orders as they come into the server before any sort of parsing or processing)
orathaic (1009 D(B))
20 Jan 14 UTC
Is there a UI solution to reduce this problem? I can imagine that typing out orders (as several older websites offer) would likely force more thinking, but would also make it harder for new players to learn how to play (i think the interface is one of the strong point for webdip)

But what else could be done?
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))

People are always going to make mistakes (assuming this was a mistake .. ahem). Bear in mind many of the DATC tests are designed around how to deal with ambiguities introduced by the flexibility of allowing people to enter text based orders, and that when you enter text based orders you need to remember the names of territories

You could always have something like "are you sure?" or "please enter the orders you just entered again", but this would probably cause more annoyance than it would save. I think there's lower hanging fruit in terms of features to develop
Draugnar (0 DX)
20 Jan 14 UTC
One thing that would do away with these issues is to lose the AJAX calls and refresh the page just like with messages. The other possibility is to add a check sum and male certain all of the AJAX message was received. I noticed one of his build messages only had one order on it, not two. The last would be a simple return dialog saying how many orders were submitted.
krellin (80 DX)

Mistakes are part of the game, by design intent of the original board game, in which if you wrote your orders out incorrectly, you suffered the consequences.

The UI in this game is simple and highly functional - it is *not* the UI's fault.
orathaic (1009 D(B))

'You could always have something like "are you sure?" or "please enter the orders you just entered again", but this would probably cause more annoyance than it would save.'

i entirely agree. I did think of a confirmation message but dismissed it.

'it is *not* the UI's fault.' - no, it is only the UI which we have power to change if we want to help prevent this, i'm not assigning fault. I'm asking does anyone have any great ideas. The ability to accidentally scroll and change your option is an issue.

It could be disabled... except now that i test it out (http://jsfiddle.net/sLvB6/ ) the onscroll event doesn't trigger, and the scroll bar doesn't seem to change options in either chrome(ium) nor firefox...
orathaic (1009 D(B))
20 Jan 14 UTC
Can anyone else confirm this? I think i can get around the onscroll event, but i can't trigger an events with my mouse-scroll, what browsers actually let you scroll to change your orders?
krellin (80 DX)
20 Jan 14 UTC
Good lord....after you enter your orders (either "Ready" or "Save") they **remain visible** until they are processed. You have every opportunity to review your orders and make changes.

This is ridiculous.
Draugnar (0 DX)
20 Jan 14 UTC
Well, it has come up enough times that I fear there may be a hidden AJAX bug which the server would never see. I had one happen just the other week that I was *sure* was a different set of orders, but I wrote it off as I screwed up cause it was a last minute change and done on my phone.
Ogion (3882 D)
20 Jan 14 UTC
Appropriately, my last comment didn't save either.

I agree with Orathaic that there's no need to change the UI interface. I actually love it as it is.

I have had issues with "saved" orders not saving, but that hasn't been a problem, and now this, so the key message is to adopt the practice that Krellin suggests and just exit the game and then go to each game before each deadline to confirm that the orders there are what you want.

The Golden Age of Diplomacy
Does anyone else find reading Sharp's "The Game of Diplomacy" really depressing? The level of dedication and analysis that he presents in the book would never be found today. Does anyone even talk about diplomacy theory anymore, or are we just left to reading relics of the past?

Homework this week
Your homework this week is to speak to an octogenarian. We won't have them for very much longer and so I think it's important for young people to meet these guys.

Hippies aren't quite the same. They're uptight in a way that the people older than them weren't.

Feature Idea
So, I play a lot of live games, and I make a lot of them. I would love an option that would let players make games where any NMR in the first year is an instant cancel. So, that way there's no situation where a Germany NMR's and England/France/Russia take advantage and go on to become monster powers.

How to deal with people taking advantage of CD
Well, yet again, we have a situation where a country solos because its neighbors go CD from the outset, everyone else is completely sporting about declaring a draw.

Perhaps some kind of ban on new games for a couple weeks or something for this kind of cheating?

The Foundation Series
I (at the suggestion of a forum member, who's name I forget but will hopefully identify themselves), just read the first three books in the foundation series by Isaac Asimov. After calibrating my block list by reading through a recent gun control debate thread, I'd like to ask forum dwellers for their take on this series, or at least the premise.
