ok i clicked it,it disappeared---what did that do? also why do i not see one under my name?
2ndWhiteLine (2611 D(B))

(+6)
If you click any user's +1, it will disappear because you can't do it more than once to any given post. Try it again with mine and see how it disappears.

You don't get one because you can't +1 your own posts. This isn't fair. You need to earn +1s by posting thoughtful or insightful posts or by tricking users into clicking your +1 button.

Each player has a total +1 count on their profile. You can see yours by clicking on your username. Some players have more +1s than others. That just means that they usually post very funny or appreciated posts. Some players don't have very many +1s. That usually means that they either don't post very often or make stupid posts. Other players just get +1s by posting lots of garbage every day that other stupid players give a +1.

You're welcome. If these posts were useful to you, please give them a +1. Also, its a tradition on this site to give a +1 to any mod post. Mods have the checkered flag by their username and we always appreciate getting a +1 because our posts are more important.

Some +1's are like giving a beautiful ring to your wife for being the missing part of you....

Other +1's are like giving a dirty crack rock to a two-bit whore.

while i'm asking questions: the donator icon on an individuals profile? obviously people who donate monetarily to the site,If this is the case i don't see anywhere one could do that if they so chose
2ndWhiteLine (2611 D(B))

This site is user supported. The server space for this site costs something like $1000 for two years and we recently had a fund raising drive to cover site operating costs for the next two years. There is a donation link in the FAQ under the Help tab.

i think you run a nice site here and am willing to help out. please feel free to contact me if something arises. so you have a server, and the $1000 is for the hosting of that server correct?

I don't speak for the site owner, but this isn't a moneymaking venture. Its a hobbyist site. kestas, the owner, runs this site as a side project and doesn't want to give the impression that the site is for-profit, which of course it isn't. Also, since the site doesn't actually own the rights to the game (Hasbro does) I would imagine that we want to avoid the impression that this is a pay-for-play site.

i get that monies are accepted. As i said I'm happy to donate. What about equipment. I am a trader and i own and use my own servers.occasionally i buy new one and have no use for the older ones, would your site be inclined to accept these types of donations?

I believe our hosting is a virtual server. I know Kestas uses a service of some sort and that the money pays for both the bandwidth and the server or VM itself.

@ssorenn - please be careful when you acknowledge that this is a well run site and you are happy to make a donation, you may upset a lot of people that use this site daily and refuse to donate, they will in turn complain to anyone who will listen that there human rights are being violated by people who are generous and supportive, an admin or a mod or several of them will then feel the need to make a post highlighting that this is in fact a FREE site to calm all the freeloaders down so they don't feel guilty about anything, you will feel bad about bringing up the subject and everyone will hate you for being such a fat cat flashing your wad to try and make up for having a rather small penis.
It will then kick off an argument about whether donator badges are a good or bad thing ...... yadda, yadda, yadda.
In conclusion, don't mention donations ever again ..... selfish people hate it !!

i don't give a rats ass what people think. if they don't like it too bad. i am entitled to say whatever i like. if someone has a problem with that, its their problem. I will say this again. i like the site and (most) of the people I've gotten to know in the short time I've been here.I would gladly make a small donation to help the site out.

brave man soren lorenson..... but as you have once again used the 'd' word can this thread be closed.

Can we not have a new rule that outlaws all mention of generosity on the forum :-)

What crawled out of your ass. This world revolves around people who are philinthropic. There is someone out there who has generously opened and keeps this site running and I am willing to help. I don't have a banner up saying everybody give to the cause or your an ass and stop playing. If you learn to just speak for yourself you won't sound so foolish

ssorenn: I'm almost certain that NigeeBaby was being sarcastic all along. Notice the Gold donator badge next to his/her username. I'm not sure who exactly NigeeBaby is mocking, though, since I don't think I've seen a thread with similar claims being made.

Nigee is nice. He was sarcastic. Welcome to WebDip and its crazy forums.

Thx but you don't have to worry about me. With the range of topics that are put out on this site, I was a little surprised at the response. I saw the gold badge,I know what it means, and I'm not trying to upset anyone ...I just wanted to help in a small way

You'll note it was a freeloader said beware of me. They are afraid, very afraid, because they know I donate a $100 every so often in other people's names and have talked about upping those donations if certain freeloaders were to be forever silenced. :-)

But welcome to the site, fellow IT dude. At least, I assume anyone who collects old servers and such is probably I'm IT somewhere.

@ssorenn, the part of the picture you are missing is "the past". In "the past", Nigee has vocally advocated donations and received negative responses from some people.

In this case, with his own sense of humor, he is "trying to protect you" from those same people in case they jump on you for mentioning donations.

In reality it appears he is looking for an excuse to break out the popcorn and nachos.

In any case, it is best to take everyone with a grain of salt around here.
Draugnar (0 DX)
20 Jan 14 UTC
(+2)
And you should also understand that Nigee did it with his unique brand of humor that only him and a few other people get, potentially putting off newcomers and driving away people who could be good contributors to the community just because they can't afford to contribute.

What you are doing is fine. You say "I want to contribute" and us other donors say *great*! We just don't want this to be a community of "donors" and "freeloaders" but instead a community that contributes as they are able but never obligated to.
NigeeBaby (100 D(G))
20 Jan 14 UTC
All those things you said .... that's what I was thinking :-)
ssorenn (0 DX)
20 Jan 14 UTC
sounds great--if a site is run like this though ,it will always be the donors and the freeloaders....its also the american way, like it or not
Draugnar (0 DX)
20 Jan 14 UTC
We do our best not to be that way. We don't usually have "donor only" games or some such and we realize that some people give significantly with their time either as mods/admins or as devs or just as regular forum posters who keep up lively spirited debate. So you'd be surprised how little honest "us and them" there is going on here.

@ssorenn - Join us in the assholes game I just bumped back up. You can be a nice guy, but expect to get called all kinds of names in the public chat... Just for fun of course. Nobody takes the public chat seriously, but we do take playing the game seriously and they are usually very competitive. I won the inaugural "Call Me a Dirty So-n-So" game, got eliminated in the second, and was part of the draw in the third IIRC. We need one more player to get started.

The Golden Age of Diplomacy
Does anyone else find reading Sharp's "The Game of Diplomacy" really depressing? The level of dedication and analysis that he presents in the book would never be found today. Does anyone even talk about diplomacy theory anymore, or are we just left to reading relics of the past?

Your homework this week is to speak to an octogenarian. We won't have them for very much longer and so I think it's important for young people to meet these guys.

Feature Idea
So, I play a lot of live games, and I make a lot of them. I would love an option that would let players make games where any NMR in the first year is an instant cancel. So, that way there's no situation where a Germany NMR's and England/France/Russia take advantage and go on to become monster powers.

Well, yet again, we have a situation where a country solos because its neighbors go CD from the outset, everyone else is completely sporting about declaring a draw.
