gunboat non-anon
it just dawned on me(duh) that if you play gunboat non-anon you can still send PM's to people...going against the actual rules---Is there a way to stop this?

Bug check?
Well, I'm not sure what happened (although I'm guessing some save error so it wont' show up in any logs) but I somehow ended up with an army in Naples rather than the fleet that I thought I'd ordered.

This professor doesn't sound like the smartest tool in the box.... and he thinks Obama is a socialist, sounds like a by-product of a failing capitalist education system

The Golden Age of Diplomacy
Does anyone else find reading Sharp's "The Game of Diplomacy" really depressing? The level of dedication and analysis that he presents in the book would never be found today. Does anyone even talk about diplomacy theory anymore, or are we just left to reading relics of the past?

Homework this week
Your homework this week is to speak to an octogenarian. We won't have them for very much longer and so I think it's important for young people to meet these guys.

Hippies aren't quite the same. They're uptight in a way that the people older than them weren't.

Feature Idea
So, I play a lot of live games, and I make a lot of them. I would love an option that would let players make games where any NMR in the first year is an instant cancel. So, that way there's no situation where a Germany NMR's and England/France/Russia take advantage and go on to become monster powers.

Someone could troll games real hard by abusing this feature to get them cancelled

Yes please
yebellz (729 D(G))

It also gives people a free pass to force cancel the game for any other reason (like not liking the power that they drew). Note that one can simply view which power they got on the home screen without actually having to open the game.

The best solution is likely a reliability rating.

Well, it would require some work. I'm just sick of CD and even more sick of those who take advantage of it.

What about if one person NMRs you just need a majority vote to cxl but if two players NMR then it's an immediate cxl of game. Also the players who NMR should lose double or even triple the points....maybe even cover the whole pot

You need to have a penalty that stings, so people will think twice about it

PlayDiplomacy has an auto reset feature that cancels the game a resets to wait for joiners to come play. Not sure how the coding works

Is there a way to make communication easier..your having a dialogue with someone but you have to keep refreshing the browser also be able to talk to two players at once

I would like it to be an option that the game creator has, but people joining the game have no idea if it's checked or not, that way you can't just join games just to troll them.

Also have a little more faith in the community people. Not every person is looking for ways to just troll games all day erre day.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

An idea put forth awhile ago is to have a deposit. You bet a certain amount to join the game, but you also put in a deposit that you lose if you CD and are replaced or the game ends with you in CD. The deposit amount would be customizable by the game creator so you could have low bet high deposit games if you wanted.

It would also be nice if cancelled games weren't actually removed from the system, but rather would stick around to count against anyone in the game that NMRd or CDd.

It would also be great if CDs stuck around even if the player was replaced. NMRs happen, CDs shouldn't.
2ndWhiteLine (2611 D(B))

I can't envision being able to implement this system without increasing the number of CDs due to players who just don't like their assigned power.

Preventing CDs after the game starts isn't the answer. The only real option is to eliminate CDs altogether with reliability rating. Auto cancels, deposits, or anything else violates the KISS principle.

RR with things like the deposit system and making certain CDs stick (I believe RR does that as implemented over on VDip) would definitely work to reduce the risk of CD either by filtering out the scum or by making them pay. Any CD deposit could be added to the pot once the player went CD.

is it possible that if a country CD's then he can't get into new game till the game that was CDed is over
Alderian (2425 D(S))

They could join several live games and just CD from the ones with countries they don't like or that don't start well.

As for the deposit, I'd rather it be split amongst those who go all the way to the end, eliminated or not, win, lose or draw. Adding it straight to the pot would encourage playing on when a CD puts you in a really good position compared to others.
Draugnar (0 DX)
15 Jan 14 UTC
Good point, Alderian. Add it to the deposit pot which gets returned equally amongst all the players who played to the end. I like that. But I think anyone eliminated should get their deposit back then and just get a nice little "residual" when the game ends for any CDs who deposit they shared in.

How to deal with people taking advantage of CD
Well, yet again, we have a situation where a country solos because its neighbors go CD from the outset, everyone else is completely sporting about declaring a draw.

Perhaps some kind of ban on new games for a couple weeks or something for this kind of cheating?

The Foundation Series
I (at the suggestion of a forum member, who's name I forget but will hopefully identify themselves), just read the first three books in the foundation series by Isaac Asimov. After calibrating my block list by reading through a recent gun control debate thread, I'd like to ask forum dwellers for their take on this series, or at least the premise.
