I have a blacklist of players that I avoid playing with for various reasons. I put their name, the date I added them, the reason, and a link to either (but usually both) a threadID and a gameID. I started it about a week ago after the worst game of diplomacy I've ever played.
What do you all think of this idea: A publicly editable blacklist for players. It would be like Wikipedia. It could work exactly like mine - I can make a spreadsheet that is publicly editable, and any time you wanted to add someone, you could just open it up. You'd cite the gameID and the threadID.
The only real problem I can think of would be that people can take themselves off if they know about it and that. If there were some way to make it so that only people I approved could edit it, that would be a lot better, but the only way I can think of to do that would be to create Hotmail accounts for all of us and be friends on Microsoft's (pathetic attempt at a) social network.
It's a shame you can't have your own "Friends List" here on the site. With that you can then have an "Ignore/Black List" (or some other name) of people who you don't want to play with or correspond with.
or only you could edit it and people can request whom to be put on said list..... I personally dont think it is a good idea. how would you feel if you were put on the list (for a logical reason or not)
Mongoose: The problem with that is that it involves me doing a lot of work. :-P If people pmed me in a very precise format, that lets me verify their story quickly, I'd be happy to do it.
What would the blacklist protect you from? Incompetence or cheating? Because incompetence is something that people can grow out of. And the only way to do that is by continuing to play.
Considering you can't stop people from joining unless you make every game password protected, this global Black List serves no purpose other than to promote site-wide metagaming. You release your list Mr. Smiley and random people will turn on anyone on that list. In effect you are turning every weak minded and incompetent person on this site into a drone to do your bidding due to paranoia and you're own frustration.
I highly advise against such an action or else you will forever regret the "contribution" you have made to this community. To be honest, i don't care who you have issues with. If i have no issues with them then stay out of my conversations with said person. Just because you can't resolve your quarrels or end their joy-riding in your games doesn't mean you have any right to turn my games into witch hunts.
Please re-evaluate what you think is just and fair play before you make your decision regarding your "Black List".
1. My blacklist is already public. It's in the spreadsheet in my profile.
2. I'm not trying to do anything about "your" games. I'm trying to inform people about players that I think should be avoided when making a game. More information is always a good thing.
3. All serious games I play are password protected, for this very reason. And this is true for a great number of people on the site.
Well Mr. Smileyface, this actually isn't a bad idea....it's a terrible idea really for the reasons whitesammy so accurately stated. And anyways, what if I were to make my own public black list? What, exactly, makes your public black list more credible than my own hypothetical one?
Because I want a list of UNdesirable people to play with.
And I don't believe in ghost ratings any more than I do points. (Ok, maybe a little more) I've known people with high GR's and high points to make absolutely stupid moves.
Why are they always 5 minute phases, never 10? 10 minutes is so much better, actually gives you time to think, or get up for a bathroom break, if and when necessary. Not to mention, agree to finalise, and it's just as fast as a 5 minute game.
what do you all think of an alliance between italy, france and austria?? austria and italy probably has to face a juggernaut and france has to face germany...
In classic Diplomacy, I am incapable of getting anything going with Russia. England always comes in from the north, Turkey from the south, and Austria and Germany usually aren't too friendly. Any ideas as to how to survive as Russia?
I'm considering joining some games where players have left. That way I might practice moves in cornered situations and also shake up the game a bit, making it more interesting – I think. Is this appreciated by the others players that have been abandoned by someone CDing, or will I get accused of massaging my rating by aiming at a cheap survive?
We are meeting at 10:00 this Sunday at Dice Dojo. That is at 5550 Broadway on the North side of Chicago. A couple of players had to drop out. Anyone interested, please post here.
Looking for a 16 friends to play a world map variant.
Thucy, hellalt, Xapi, fortknox, President Eden, abgemacht, figlesquidge, peterwiggin, djbent, jbalcorn, others who have played me and would like to join in? Small pot, non-anon, WTA?
I think it would be useful to have an additional chat tab where your own country is listed, in which you can talk to yourself. Not only would it introduce a new dimension to the game for schizophrenics, you would also be able to take notes about the game and remind yourself to do things.
