What is your opinion on Clint Eastwood?

Because I am increasingly convinced that he is a God.
Draugnar (0 DX)

If Clint Eastwood and Chuck Norris got into a fight, the universe would implode because neither can ever lose and neither ever takes long to finish off his opponent. The paradox would just be too much.
Tolstoy (1962 D)
09 Feb 11 UTC
If Clint Eastwood were a god I think he would've done a better job of juggling all those women over the years. I suspect he is merely a demi-god.
Putin33 (111 D)
09 Feb 11 UTC
A bad actor who plays the same character in every movie. He's also done a couple of monumentally horrifying movies - Dirty Harry & The Outlaw Josey Wales.

Draugnar (0 DX)
09 Feb 11 UTC
@Putin - but what about Pale Rider? And he is far more than an actor. Go watch Flags of Our Fathers, Letters from Iwo Jima, Mystic River, and Unforgiven. He is a very talented director.
Putin33 (111 D)
09 Feb 11 UTC
Mystic River ok, Flags of our Fathers was weird and disjointed. It is mind-boggling that the man as many academy awards as he does.
fiedler (1293 D)

That one where he was a secret service agent protecting the president, was a groovy little film.

I haven't watched most of his older movies, but have really enjoyed his later work. Gran Torino was just great.
spyman (424 D(G))
09 Feb 11 UTC
One of cinema's greats. It is true that he pretty much plays the same way in each movie, but he is not a character actor (like Geoffrey Rush for example). He is a persona actor, he does what he does, and no one else can do it. Very few actors can take a short and give it so much power.
spyman (424 D(G))
09 Feb 11 UTC
short *line
@ Putin33 - I say this with the utmost sincerity: Burn in Hell.
When he was younger his movies were built on masculinity and the fact that no one could do what he did. John Wayne was a great Western actor, but he was always the good guy. Eastwood started the anti-hero in American cinema. The Man With No Name and Dirty Harry are American legends, and anyone who says otherwise has their head in the sand. Now that he's older, not only has he progressed as an actor, but he's a damn good director. Million Dollar Baby was a great movie, no two ways about it. And Gran Torino, Good Lord. I want to be Walt Kowalski when I'm old.
largeham (149 D)
09 Feb 11 UTC
I don't see the appeal. His older movies range from okay to quite good, but both Million Dollar Baby and Gran Torino struck me as Oscar bait.

LJ, I can't see why you would want to be a rascist, lonely war veteran.
Ivo_ivanov (7545 D)
09 Feb 11 UTC
Very good actor, even better as a director.
hellalt (70 D)
09 Feb 11 UTC
Chuck Norris is uncomparable.
@ hellalt - You're right. Comparing anyone, even Clint Eastwood to Chuck Norris is unfair. On a side note, did you know the Bible was originally entitled Chuck Norris and Friends?

@ largeham - Lonely? Possibly. Racist? Did you not get the entire point of the movie? Angry, scary, well-armed, beef-jerky eating, scowling, possessing of an awesome car, and single-handedly responsible for the maturation of a young man? Yes. Awesome? Definitely.
largeham (149 D)
09 Feb 11 UTC
Pfft, I don't get the love of Chuck Norris. Why not worship Bruce Lee, a man who really deserves it.
LJ, he does start out racist, but he improves. As for the car, I'm not much into cars, so I don't care, but I do see your point overall.

"He is a persona actor, he does what he does, and no one else can do it."

Gruff 'tough' guys are a dime a dozen. But I like how this academy award winning actor gets all of these excuses for his lack of versatility and lack of ability to act or produce art.

Seriously, there are few movies he's done I've ever heard of people watching more than once. Many of them are total clunkers who people can't remember watching even if they had.
Putin33 (111 D)
09 Feb 11 UTC
"I want to be Walt Kowalski when I'm old."

That says a lot.
Putin33 (111 D)
09 Feb 11 UTC
It's a terrible tragedy that poor actors like Eastwood get awards (and the people who made Slumdog Millionaire....) and geniuses like Peter O'Toole have nothing.

Shows you that the academy awards junk.
largeham (149 D)
09 Feb 11 UTC
Now now, Danny Boyle did make good movies (Trainspotting), but Slumdog was a piece of shit. I'm bored waiting for the train, so I'm gonna dance? Christ, my sister and mother watch lots of bollywood films(kinda obvious, we're from bombay), but I swear that's the worst excuse or a song ever. Not including the rest of the film.
largeham (149 D)

*for a song*
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))
09 Feb 11 UTC
While I agree that Slumdog was complete trash and that Peter O'Toole was certainly deserving of an Academy win, I don't think its fair to say that Eastwood is a poor actor. Sure, he isn't diverse in his roles, but the roles he plays, he plays well.
Putin33 (111 D)
09 Feb 11 UTC
"Sure, he isn't diverse in his roles, but the roles he plays, he plays well."

He's an older version of Keanu Reeves. Maybe Keanu will get a few oscars.
@ Putin - Find a hole. Fall in headfirst. Then again, I shouldn't be too surprised. What else could I expect from someone who names himself after the political grandchild of Stalin.
Putin33 (111 D)
09 Feb 11 UTC
Take your meds, LJ. The fact that you get so riled up about Clint Eastwood is pathetic. There are legions of people who don't adore this granite faced one-note actor whose idea of 'directing' includes total predictability and being cliche to the point of ridiculous.

Maybe his devotees have an inferiority complex and Eastwood provides an opportunity to assert their exaggerated sense of masculinity.
JetJaguar (820 D)
09 Feb 11 UTC
Is he a top 10 actor? No.
Is he a top 10 director? No.

But hell, those are just jobs. I would say he's a top 10 icon. Certainly still falls into the "Women want him, men want to be him" category at 79. That says alot.

About live games
Why are they always 5 minute phases, never 10? 10 minutes is so much better, actually gives you time to think, or get up for a bathroom break, if and when necessary. Not to mention, agree to finalise, and it's just as fast as a 5 minute game.

In classic Diplomacy, I am incapable of getting anything going with Russia. England always comes in from the north, Turkey from the south, and Austria and Germany usually aren't too friendly. Any ideas as to how to survive as Russia?

Webdip Etiquette
I'm considering joining some games where players have left. That way I might practice moves in cornered situations and also shake up the game a bit, making it more interesting – I think.
Is this appreciated by the others players that have been abandoned by someone CDing, or will I get accused of massaging my rating by aiming at a cheap survive?

Feature Request: Notes Section
I think it would be useful to have an additional chat tab where your own country is listed, in which you can talk to yourself. Not only would it introduce a new dimension to the game for schizophrenics, you would also be able to take notes about the game and remind yourself to do things.
