Does this game have to be cancelled?
Hi. I'm currently in this game in which we had 3 people get banned. There haven't been any moves made yet and it is still in spring 1901. So if we were able to fill the positions, 1 of which has been filled already, would we be allowed to continue? Here's a link to the game.

Need a replacement Texas in Full Press Anon WTA, low stakes game.
Texas was banned, and without a replacement it's going to be a very one-sided game.

The Favorite Author Tournament: The Round of 32
And here we go, into Round 2, with Shakespeare being out due to his losing again...because he's the master of tragedy, of course! ;) Will there be literary superstars? Yes! Will there be a glut of sci fi and fantasy writers? Yes! Will Thucy continue push a #ThoreauLaozi2016 platform (Change We Can Believe In...except change is just a natural process and you must learn to accept it like the good little Transcendentalist that you are!) YES! ;) 32 authors, 1 goal...whatever that is.

The Last Man in Europe...Or, Rather, China
http://news.yahoo.com/25-years-tiananmen-barely-known-china-youth-064659528.html That's honestly very depressing...It was 1989...but its treatment is not too far from "1984." And THIS is why I have such a hard time sympathizing with those shouting "Wake the Fuck Up," as if disagreement over America's future was the equivalent to being asleep at the wheel. Neither Bush nor Obama were the tyrants the Michael Moores and Glenn Becks call them out to be...THIS is The Party incarnate...

Lil' bit of French
I want to know how to say this in French:
"(I would like to reserve the spot) in the period from 16 July to 6 August."
That might not even be a proper English sentence, but you probably get what I mean. I just need to make clear in which period, and I don't know how.
Monday morning I'm handing in a letter in which I need that sentence, so there's no rush.

WebDiplomacy Mafia II: vDiplomacy Invasion
NOTE: The rules for this game are almost exactly the same as for the last one, but with changes to the TIE-RESOLUTION METHOD and the additions of the MOLE and QUESTION ASKER roles. If you read the rules in the last thread, you can just skip to these sections in this one, as the rest is the same. If you did not, it is strongly advised you read the whole of the below post.
The post has been copied from PE’s post (with his permission) with edits to reflect the changes.

You always know whether the number is odd or even. As the group gets smaller, you can use that in conjunction with your reads to make informed guesses.
Gtlblx (865 D)

The sum question is far superior, because the information it gives improves as you catch more Mafia, and limits the different possible combinations of Mafia.
ghug (5046 D (B))
28 May 14 UTC
Yeah, that's why I like it better, but if you're smart the odd-even question can be nearly as useful.
@Gtblx: That was exactly the point I was trying to make, which is why I prefered my own question (though in hindsight it was a bad question) and backed the sum one.

So, I'll go into my initial thoughts on the QA role...

We (Jmo and I, as we both set up the game even though I ended up doing the GMing) wanted to vary the game a little from the previous one, but since neither of us were veterans of the game we didn't want to change it too much, as we did not know how many of each we would need to balance it.

Jmo came up with the mole and QA roles. Initially, the QA could ask (iirc) 3 yes/no questions, one per night, and they would be answered by the GM in the thread. His questions also did not counter the mole or the copscan immune SK. The idea behind this was we brought in a new role for the town (QA) and a counter for the mafia (Mole).

We decided this was way too overpowered, so we set about lowering the power of the QA. We made his ability a one-shot one, and at the same time, I came up with the idea that instead of the mole being a counter to the QA, the QA should be a counter to the mole, otherwise the role is too similar to that of the cop. I'm still not sure if this was the best idea, but it seemed so at the time so we made the QA's question bypass scan immunities.

With the scan immunity bypass, though, the QA was overpowered again. At the time, I had not thought of the type of questions that came up in this thread (I was thinking he would ask things like is there a mafia member among X, Y, Z) but I was aware people may find a very good question that I had not thought of. I tried to come up with a way to make the QA's role more interesting to play while at the same time reducing his power.

The idea of the question being answered on his death seemed great, as it adds a completely new dynamic to the role. The QA's question is much, much more powerful if asked late game (While you can make questions that stay relevant towards the end game when asked at the start, the question can become a lot more direct and foolproof when asked when there are less people around), so the QA wants to survive the early game. However, the town can't afford to waste a lynch on him in the late game, so he needs to get the mafia or the SK to kill him, which they won't do if they know he's the QA. Therefore, he needs to survive to the end game without revealing his role, and then make himself a target for the mafia/SK and get himself night killed.

Of course, all of this depends on the QA's aim being to die. The QA using his role to make sure he wouldn't die had not occurred to me - I figured that if he was going to be lynched at any point he would go with it, as it benefits the town, or if he didn't want to die yet he would roleclaim and then ask the town to lynch him at a later time. The QA becoming an invincible townie was not what I had in mind when making the role, and I think it defeats the point of the role - roles are supposed to make the game more interesting, but this just allows one person to sit out of the game with no fear of dying to lynch or kill.

If there was some way to make dying much more preferable to becoming an invincible town player to the QA, without making his power overpowered, then I think the role would be great and build on the game. However, in its current state it's a destructive role to the game rather than a constructive one, so I don't think it should be used in future games.
For me, this game, I didnt have it figured out from the start either. I can remember my first question, but it was properly vanilla like the ones Chaqa suggested. I was aiming for a nightkill, (although I may just not have the appropriately agreesive playing style to get to that), but I had decided that it would be better - almost in all cases - to day-lynch anybody else except a confirmed townie.

However, the proper formulation of The Question came only later. Had I had this question from the start, I think I would have played differenty. In fact, I would have roleclaimed day 1 and insisted to have been lynched. This question is the gift that keeps on giving. When done at Day 1, it gives an objective measure with which you can really root out the scum systematically.

@captainmeme: how about just prohibiting the role is revealed? That should reduce the QA's power.

Putting restrictions on what a person can post is not something that should happen in Mafia, IMO. It's far too hard to regulate this, as you have to rely on the GM's judgement as to whether people cross the line - for example, the person hinting at themselves being the QA, but not directly stating so. How obvious does it have to be before it breaks the rules?

What might work is if the QA doesn't know they are the QA until they die, and then they submit a question, but that removes the different objectives the QA has that makes the role interesting. I think it'll need quite a bit more thought before it's a constructive yet interesting role, so it's probably best that it's put to the side for the next game(s).
Gtlblx (865 D)
28 May 14 UTC
If you want to limit the QA power you should mke it so that the question is answered only if the QA is lynched. That way it wouldn't provide protection from nightkills.

Though it would still be a big bonus for the town, in this case the correct play would clearly be to claim and get lynched on D1 with the sum question.
That would only lose you one player and give the town the answer. Whole different game.

Let the QA commit suicide at night
Gtlblx (865 D)
28 May 14 UTC
Letting the QA commit suicide at night would just add to its power. The Town wouldn't need to waste a lynch, and the QA wouldn't need to rely on mafia/sk for his death.

Let the Mafia roleblock prevent the question from being answered. Then it makes the reveal dangerous.

I still think the best option is replacing the role with something else, but that would be the best fix.
