Civil Disorder
If a player allows his units to go into civil disorder and the game message states that the country is in civil disorder, can the player take the country back? Will the Games message system notify the rest of the players if the player has returned?

Panama Canal on World Variant
Quick question - is there a Panama Canal on the world variant (i.e. if you move to Central America can you go to the Carribean Sea and the Northeast Pacific)? There is no East Coast/West Coast marking on Central America, so I was not sure how that worked exactly.

Ranking of web-based Diplomacy websites V
NEW: Use of http://compete.com/!

I currently consider statistics from www.alexa.com/siteinfo for BOUNCED (www.dipbounced.com), phpDiplomacy (www.phpdiplomacy.net), www.stabbeurfou.org, PLAYdiplomacy (www.playdiplomacy.com), WorldLeaders the Game (www.worldleadersthegame.com) and webDiplomacy (webdiplomacy.net). From now on I will also include dip.xbsd.kr and goonDiplomacy (goondip.com).

I now am also including statistics for PLAYdiplomacy (www.playdiplomacy.com), WorldLeaders the Game (www.worldleadersthegame.com) and webDiplomacy (webdiplomacy.net) from http://siteanalytics.compete.com/.

I do not rank Facebook Diplomacy or PBEM websites primarily because I don't believe it is possible to do so for most of them. Because of this, I am only considering web-based implementations of Diplomacy on websites dedicated to that purpose.

Alexa on its Alexa Traffic Rank:
"
[BOLD]Alexa Traffic Rank[ENDBOLD]
A measure of a website’s popularity.

The rank is calculated using a
combination of average daily visitors
and pageviews over the past 3 months.
The site with the highest combination
of visitors and pageviews is ranked #1.

[BOLD]Updated Daily[ENDBOLD]
"

compete on its Compete Rank:
"
The Compete Rank is based on Unique Visitors and does not consider page views or number of visits made to the site. Rank is often used as a compliment to Unique Visitors to provide a relative metric that shows the significance of a site.

For example, in March 2007, eBay attracted 75M people, which ranked as the third largest site on the Internet within the U.S.

Interesting graph comparing the top three:
http://siteanalytics.compete.com/webdiplomacy.net+playdiplomacy.com+worldleadersthegame.com/
And a fishy graph comparing the top two:

(Those graphs are of Unique Visitors.)

it seems that after a few times that webdiplomacy.net reached and surpassed playdiplomacy.com, playdiplomacy.com is steadily ahead. I don't get it. Why? What does this site has to offer more?
jimgov (219 D(B))
13 Feb 10 UTC
If you google diplomacy game, the first hit is a wikipedia entry. The second is playdiplomacy. This site is not on the first page. Maybe this has something to do with it?
jimgov (219 D(B))
13 Feb 10 UTC
Also, diplomacy online had playdiplomacy first, and this site second.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
13 Feb 10 UTC
jim: that's the main issue yes. That place was started by a SEO expert (Search Engine Optimisation), which basically means he knows all the tricks to get yourself up the rankings.
What would be really great would be if people would advertise this place on their blogs, tweets etc.
jimgov (219 D(B))
13 Feb 10 UTC
I agree. We need to get the word out. I found this site first and fell in love. I tried playdiplomacy and found it a little...unwieldy. Not as user friendly as here. And then, right after I joined, the site operator posted that he wasn't going to keep the site up and they started talking about raising money and making it a pay site. I just walked away.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
13 Feb 10 UTC
He's been doing that right since they started jim :P
jimgov (219 D(B))
13 Feb 10 UTC
So why are people actually playing there? This site is much more user friendly, IMO. And it isn't even close.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
13 Feb 10 UTC
Firstly, I'm not sure how many people *ARE* actually playing there - can't see anything of hte site without signing up. Also it is quite possible that some of his data is faked, or are self-hits.
Having said that, I think one big issue is finding this place. Once you're here you're unlikely to leave (for another diplomacy site), and here we even talk about the alternatives. However, I strongly doubt their forum has conversations about the relative merits of this place!
pastoralan (100 D)
15 Feb 10 UTC
As a new player...yeah, I found playdiplomacy from the Wikipedia article and joined a game. Their server has been only barely functional, so the moves are all running 3-4 days behind schedule. I started looking for alternatives and found this. Like it lots better, and I won't be joining another game at playdiplomacy.
flashman (2274 D(G))
15 Feb 10 UTC
Don't we have SEO's on this site? I can think of one but I won't volunteer him [sic] without his permission...
JECE (1322 D)
15 Feb 10 UTC
Alexa still has webDiplomacy doing better, by quite a bit. Perhaps it is more accurate, as it combines "average daily visitors and pageviews over the past 3 months", compared to 'compete', which only considers "Unique Visitors and does not consider page views or number of visits". If Google takes you to PLAYdiplomacy first, then that could explain the huge discrepency. I think wedDiplomacy is more active, but what do I know?

I actually found this site first here: http://www.freewaregenius.com/2008/05/15/an-overview-of-free-turn-based-strategy-and-war-games/. I didn't know other sites existed until I saw the Wikipedia article.
Chrispminis (916 D)

JECE, that's interesting. I remember way back when I was investigating multi-accounting, only to find that they were actually accounts owned by employees of the site who were working on that article. Takes me back. I was wondering if that added bit of publicity would bring people.
JECE (1322 D)

Chrispminis: Well it brought me, and I don't regret my joining. This site is awesome! :-)

Cool idea (from playdiplomacy)
All of this talk about play diplomacy led me back to their site. I was poking around the forums, and found something that we could use here.
