WebDiplomacy Mafia II: vDiplomacy Invasion
NOTE: The rules for this game are almost exactly the same as for the last one, but with changes to the TIE-RESOLUTION METHOD and the additions of the MOLE and QUESTION ASKER roles. If you read the rules in the last thread, you can just skip to these sections in this one, as the rest is the same. If you did not, it is strongly advised you read the whole of the below post.

My wife is going to be out of town with the kids. I will be home in 3 and a half hours. I have not played a live game on this site, so I thought I'd check to see interest.

"The "spirit of the game" is to do everything in your power to win. Anything less is an insult to your fellow players."

THANK YOU

whats with these youngbloods who dont know that the whole idea of what makes dip fun is the crazy shenanigans you do to try to win...

eavesdropping thru a door in f2f.. peaking at orders.. chainsaw diplomacy.. psychological games in general. plying your opponents with booze.. getting your girlfriend to ally you out of loyalty then stabbing her when the moment is ripe.

This is the game of Diplomacy. The most cunning wins. The most creative wins.

It's all you gunboat fuckers ruining it.

Thucy, those kinds of things aren't that bad. I'm talking about the game being ruined when there are players missing.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
23 May 14 UTC
The thing is though, that happens almost every game. It's essentially chance when and where and to whom it happens. It's really just part of playing the game on this website. If you cancel every time someone CDs, you never finish a game.

What ruins the game is when people stop playing to win because of an inevitable CD.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
23 May 14 UTC
I've been called out and shamed for cannibalizing CDs before, and this has always been my response. My response is: I hope you would do the same in my position, and meantime, why not look for a replacement.
Chaqa (3971 D(B))

A mid-game CD is a bit different. It's 1901 CD that I hate a lot. It's annoying when you sign up for a live game and only 10 minutes later 2 people don't show.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
23 May 14 UTC
sure, but the idea stands. it'd be different if it was very explicitly a "NO CD TOLERATED" sort of game. but just a vanilla game? like i said it is essentially random who drops out, just as the country draws are not perfectly balanced, yet random, thus fair.
uclabb (589 D)

I agree that people are under no obligation to draw or cancel with CDs, but I would prefer they do. In particular, it's just wrong to say that CDs don't matter among good players- that's absolute nonsense. Perfect players don't play to a 7 way draw. They play to a 3 way draw- 5 or 4 beat 2 or 3, then 3 beat 1 or 2.

I think things are different in regular games and on gunboat games. In regular games you can deal with the CD using diplomacy, either to convince people to cancel the game or to get other powers to deal with the one with an advantage (or try to get the advantage to you). Anyway, you have the chance to deal with that.

But in gunboats a CD in 1901 is really annoying and I also think is bad sportmanship to continue playing as the game is usually ruined. But unless you have previously agreed on that with the other players, you can´t expect people to follow this and that´s why I don´t play random games with people I don´t know.

" it is essentially random who drops out" Country? Yeah. Player? Not so much. Certain morons are less respectful to their fellow players than others.
Krasnaja (176 D)

I agree with the OP and I wish there was consensus on considering CDs (whenever they happen) just a random event part of the game one has to deal with (in some cases it will be an advantage, in some other cases a disadvantage).

However, since this doesn't seem to be the case (and I doubt any amount of debate could settle the question) I think there should be one very small (and much less complicated than RR, although RR serves a broader purpose) change to the interface: the inclusion of a text box where the person creating the game can write a description of some aspects of that game, including an open statement of what is expected in terms of "sportmanship" from other joining players.

I can play either way, but what's annoying, at least for me, is not that much CDs in itself but rather when some country goes CD and there is uncertainty about what should be done.

Maybe we could also just agree on conventional acronyms one could include in the game title, for instance CiCD or NCiCD (Cancel/No Cancel if Civil Disorder).

(I know that clarity could also be achieved by creating a password protected game and advertising the password together with the description on the forum, but it seems quite cumbersome.)

Taking advantage of a civil disorder to get a solo seems, to me, to go against the spirit of a competitive game. I find it very distasteful. So, I come down strongly on the "Cancel a CD game" side. Mid-game civil disorders are, in my experience, even more disruptive than 1901 ones (which gives everyone sort of a chance to balance things out).

Things are a little different in live games, though, where it's more difficult to find replacement and generally more disruptive of one's daily life to see a running live game wasted.

I think this website has overly santitized the game. I'd be curious to know of the people who are complaining about CDs how many regularly play F2F.

I'm afraid I'm with Chaqa. The game is about winning as the result of clever, cunning play. If you drop three extra supply centers in France's lap to get him to 9 while everyone else is battling it out to hit 6, then you've got a situation where even a drunken monkey (and by this I mean Al) could win, no skill, cleverness or cunning needed.

We ought to include a setting for those who like CDs that randomly assigns their units and SCs to other powers mid game just for fun too. Now THAT would be amusing
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

There's no such thing as dropping extra SCs into someone's lap.

"I think this website has overly santitized the game. I'd be curious to know of the people who are complaining about CDs how many regularly play F2F."

Agreed.

The game is cutthroat. The whole ethos is "no hard feelings."

You play dirty. That's just how the game is supposed to be. That's what makes it unique. This is not a strategy game. This is a claw-your-way-to-the-top game.

@Krasnaja

Sir I want to thank you for your input. Hopefully as the software matures, a feature like this can be added. It could potentially avoid a lot of ambiguity.

@Chaqa

I think that's where the disconnect is, Bro. You don't seem to understand that I'm on your side. I would love nothing better than if you could run your own series of much higher quality games right along side of my ghetto matches.

But you're shooting yourself in the foot. My matches are meant to appeal to the lowest common denominator. They're meant to be good and quick and dirty and fun. Quality *absolutely* takes a back seat in my games. I'm not building them with you in mind.

If you were at all serious about building quality games, you would stop trolling my games and instead use them as a recruitment base for another set of higher quality games. I am 100% okay with this. In fact I'm secretly hoping that you or someone else will do this.

Instead, you're acting like a purist, and purists ruin everything.

@Chaqa,

Can we reach some kind of settlement here, Chaqa? While I had established this thread simply to outline the possibility that I just might not be a cheater, you seem to have raised other and related issues.

Can I please get your permission to resume running my beloved yet crappy open gaming league? I'll admit that you've been successful at driving it underground, but hopefully you can now admit that you're punishing yourself worse than you're punishing me.

If someone CDs I prefer to simply draw with those remaining so the CD stays on someone's permanent record. I'd hate to cancel a game and let the guy go unpunished.

PPSC Points Distribution
With regards to this game: gameID=142343

The pot was 175 D. Germany won with 22 of 34 SCs, so by my calculations Germany should win ( 22 / 34 ) * 175 = 113 D, but Germany only won 105 D (which is 60%, exactly, of the pool). Similarly, Turkey finished with 9 of 34 SCs, so Turkey should win ( 9 / 34 ) * 175 = 46 D, but won 53 D. What gives?
