Going for all points or playing nice
When you are about to solo, do you typically try to rack up as many points as you can in the last turn, or be nice to your allies and get just enough SCs to solo?
MKECharlie (2074 D(G))
31 Jan 13 UTC
It doesn't matter. ;-)
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
31 Jan 13 UTC
If the only reason you are soloing is because of someone else's stupidity or someone else's assistance, reward em...
MKECharlie (2074 D(G))
31 Jan 13 UTC
No, I mean you'll get the same number of points regardless.
MKECharlie (2074 D(G))

Unless, of course, you play that abomination known as PPSC.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
31 Jan 13 UTC
Then why's it matter?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

I don't see why it matters. A solo is a solo, if you're playing WTA (which you should be).
Yeah, there's no difference in the amount of points you get, so take as few SC's as you need.
Draugnar (0 DX)
31 Jan 13 UTC
Even in PPSC, the winner only gets 18 SCs worth, even if he takes all 34 SCs.
MKECharlie (2074 D(G))
31 Jan 13 UTC
Having said all that, I did wait to solo in one game at the request of the other players, so they could eliminate France before the game was over, so he'd get a "defeated" instead of a "survived". (You should remember gameID=50247 goldfinger.)

It didn't make much sense to me at the time (and still doesn't), since I consider a survive the worst possible outcome of a game.
MKECharlie (2074 D(G))
31 Jan 13 UTC
@Draug: I'm pretty sure that's not how it works.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
31 Jan 13 UTC
You can get up to 34 SCs worth in PPSC, Draug.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))
31 Jan 13 UTC
Example... in this solo, I earned 23 D instead of 21. gameID=106464
Draugnar (0 DX)
31 Jan 13 UTC
I guarantee it is. I've seen the code but Kestas could confirm. He changed it because there were players drawing out solos to try and max out their winnings. Therefore he changed it so a win in PPSC pays out 1SC over half.
I thought I had forgotten that game....ugh, Italy completely lost it and France was being completely uncooperative.
Draugnar (0 DX)
31 Jan 13 UTC
Actually 23 is correct.

42/34*18 rounded up =378/17=22 & 6/17th which *always* rounds up = 23.
Draugnar (0 DX)
31 Jan 13 UTC
If you had gotten paid for the extra center, you would have made 24 D. Remember, it always roudns up in favor of the players, not the bank.
ghug (5068 D(B))
31 Jan 13 UTC
If I remember correctly, the winner is counted as having 18 SCs for the purposes of point division, but the other players are counted as having their actual amounts, so if the pot is large enough and/or the win is big enough, there still is a slight advantage to winning with more SCs.
I figure you just try to get as many SCs as you can in that last fall phase, since you don't always know every move will succeed. I've had one or two games where if I'd held back a little on the last turn, I wouldn't have won - and I've had games where if I'd moved a little bit differently one fall phase, I may have actually won a year or two before I did.
MKECharlie (2074 D(G))
31 Jan 13 UTC
@Draug - perhaps kestas changed the code since I won gameID=41585 but the math works out there as points, you know, per supply center.

(blech. that game left a bad taste in my mouth. It was the last time I played ppsc, and I won't do it again. The whole argument of how points are divided in ppsc games is moot, since the whole idea is an abomination, as I said earlier.)
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
31 Jan 13 UTC
Draugnar is correct. In PPSC you only get points equal to 18 centers worth. This may be increased if there are CD players since then the formula is a bit different. Going for extra centers will not get you more points though.
MKECharlie (2074 D(G))
31 Jan 13 UTC
Well, it used to.
Draugnar (0 DX)
31 Jan 13 UTC
@MKE - What part of "he changed it" didn't you comprehend? I said "he changed it". Was that not clear enough for you? I even said "he changed it because there were players drawing out their solos to maximize their winnings." That game is almost 2 years old. So again I will say "he changed it".
MKECharlie (2074 D(G))
31 Jan 13 UTC
I just wanted someone to acknowledge that those of us with specific examples demonstrating a different reward mechanism aren't crazy.

bo_sox posted a game with an example that you refuted, so I posted one with another example, and just wanted to make sure I wasn't crazy here.
Draugnar (0 DX)
31 Jan 13 UTC
I also posted "he changed it". I really don't see how a very recent game (greater than 100000 ID) compares to a really low game (less than 42000 ID or half the site ago) when I said "he changed it".

If I seem to be being stubborn, it's because I said he changed it even *before* I saw the posting with the game ID from bo (cross posting). So I wasn't even back pedaling but you were clearly ignoring what I posted.

"splitting hairs over asynchronous postings!"

That's like Draug's super power. (If you don't count creeping on young girls : ) )

Hey now, abge, 17 years old isn't a "girl". Don't you realize you're infantilizing young women everywhere when you say that?

And MoW - Abso-fucking-lutely right!
You do know it is humanly possible to be right without being stubborn, right? ;-)

Of course, but stubborn is much more fun. I am quietly right at work all the time as a team player. Here is where I get to be an asshole.

It used to give you more points, I'm sure of it. I once got 21 centers and got the credit for all of them. That was about 4 years ago, I believe.

This was interesting, but when was the change?
http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=76087#gamePanel
That game was about 8 months ago and I received points according to the new rules: credit for one more SC than required to win.

Anyway, I wouldn't go for max-points in my current game anyway because the people that are still alive were instrumental to my win, and the game was all kinds of screwed up because of an unsportsmanlike player. They deserve a fair share.
