Going for all points or playing nice
When you are about to solo, do you typically try to rack up as many points as you can in the last turn, or be nice to your allies and get just enough SCs to solo?

Fairfax (1915 D)

I realized it's PPSC after this game ended too. Kinda sucks, I very much prefer WTA. But I don't think England has thrown me the solo. Seems to me like there really wasn't much he could do.

Well giving up Berlin was pretty bad for the cause, st.pete can be taken back easy and I didn't stand a chance of holding Naples and Rome but I could have kept Austria out of Tunis pretty easily, would have saved the draw but included Germany unless Austria backed off.
Fairfax (1915 D)
13 Jan 13 UTC
There was no point in holding Berlin, I would have just taken it in the fall when I got an army to Prussia. The game really should have ended a year earlier, but I made an idiotic mistake and ordered Moscow to StP instead of Livonia
Gen. Lee (7588 D(B))
13 Jan 13 UTC
No you are right about that situation, I wasn't looking at e board my thought about Berlin being the crux should be referenced to fall 1907 when position was overcommitted west and resulted in not being able to hold there.

Well, I thought someone would come in here with a running total. I believe this mini-tournament is scored based on points, correct me if I'm wrong I didn't bother looking for the original thread since its likely locked. Points are listed based on country played in this order: E/F/G/R/I/A/T. a - indicates the game has not ended while 0 indicates elimination. Someone can switch it to a pretty format if they would like.

After games 3 and 5 have ended:
Fairfax: -/-/-/-/236/375/- = 611
Josnice: 250/-/-/0/-/-/- = 250
Gen. Lee: -/84/236/-/-/-/- = 320
2ndwhiteline: -/236/-/-/0/-/- = 236
The Czech: -/-/-/0/-/-/0 = 0
Partysane: 0/-/0/-/-/-/- = 0
Kompole: -/-/-/-/-/0/0 = 0
josunice (3702 D(S))
17 Jan 13 UTC
I set it up ppsc.... Guess I was used to pick up games when random people would bail early in the format. Not to fear with this illustrious crowd... Thanks, Gen for compiling the score so far. I'm thinking I'm coming out even when all is said and done. How did you guys like the format (other than ppsc)?
Gen. Lee (7588 D(B))
17 Jan 13 UTC
I don't mind PPSC since this is a tournament based on score it makes sense, I just play 99% WTA so I didn't realize it til the game was over, lol. Should be some games ending here soon, so we'll see how I can finish up.

I was surprised to see this game draw. Thought france would press further with my lack of fleets in the north and him having control of italy. Had I not got drunk and forgot to enter orders before going to bed I would have got in position to take berlin, but after i NMRd I had entered orders to hold germany in position and work to eliminate either turkey or austria. Well fairfax is running away with this thing right now and has crossed the breakeven point of 707.

One general observation, guys. Most of the games where I got fully destroyed involved another power overextending and dying themselves -- as German, Russia committed to against me, and got taken over from the back, and as Italy, France overextended and lost his centers bogged down in the Medi... In both, however, I didn't do a good enough job to delay before being irreparably impaired.... Next time...

Wow, I thought that was Fairfax...my quick EOG. I was England and wanted to run an E/G alliance so I opened with an obvious anti-french opening. Fall 1901 I took Norway and took a shot at Brest. Turns out that nobody took Belgium and but the detail shows Germany and France supporting each other there. I offer Russia support to Sweden which he had been bounced from the previous year as my last hope of an ally but he turns back to st. pete that same turn. Pissed off that Germany had declined my offer of friendship I decided France would get my centers and didn't bother too much with defending them, rather focused on slowing germany down and generally annoying him.

The times I have died I got ganged up on 2 v 1. This was one of them.

Gen. Lee (7588 D(B))

I'm curious what you guys do with England?

I used to open vanilla edi/nth and get after Russia. The problem was that 9/10 France players bring 2 fleets north and even if they dont attack you immediately they are a constant threat there. Or they come at you right off the bat and its difficult to defend once they get those fleets behind you, liverpool is almost certainly lost and norway is a major risk of loss. So after seeing some good players run E/G's I gave the alliance a try and had some very successful runs with it. It's funny because, as France I prefer the E/F alliance to others, but as E I just don't trust F to go for it, and there is not an easy way to signal it. It always seems most French players want England gone.

Re: Question on Eng-Fra openings... In no press, I am more and more leaning towards opening with London to EC. You can signal friendliness by focusing on Belgium, or just screw it and gamble for Brest. Opening vulnerable just leaves too much to the good graces of France....

OK - Game 1 (gameID=106912) -- I was Turkey, and though Russia was getting smacked out, I was in decent position. HOWEVER, Russia choice to keep his fleet in Black Sea with vacant Rumania. Instead of fighting to regain territory (which would have been in my interest to get him back into Sev), or just dying gracefully, he took Const from behind. Blew me up -- I was lucky to just survive... That move ensured Russia's demise and just took me, his ally, down with him... Ughhhhhh...

Well that was my first 2 way draw ever. I feel a tiny bit bad for 2WL in this one, but then again I never got support from Russia until like 1907 once he had already gobbled up Vienna and Trieste. It seemed the logical conclusion that I was next. My goal was to get to Albania, Serbia, Bulgaria, Black Sea, and Armenia and hold off the purple beast to make the draw. In the process of trying to move into that position I got a couple breaks on good guesses and needed up in better position than I had hoped. An NMR after that sealed the deal for Russia and I raced. To get fleets to Tunis to prevent an English solo. I think England could have made a better run at the solo...but maybe he was feeling bad for the rest of us...
josunice (3702 D(S))
26 Jan 13 UTC
Hmmm, @fairfax continues to clean house... Nice play @Gen... I'm still pulling for a break even. I want another run at this 7 format, too. How about WTA @75 this time? My pain of this round will end soon... We could add public press for in game trash talking, but the temptation to affect the play may be too great. I am also ok with non anon...

Game 6 link: gameID=106917

Jeez, neighbors with 2WL again...I was going for a standard lepanto and when I saw the fleet build at symrna I decided to throw a fake that I was going for France in spring 1902. Expecting to get to east med the following turn I was disappointed to see that Austria did not support me there and that France had moved to Piedmont. In my experience a lepanto is too slow without an Austria that is actively helping his partner get in and takeover turkey, it also seemed that France was commiting heavily against Germany and England at the same time. So I thought there was a chance I could change directions after my lepanto attempt and sneak into marseilles if not position my fleets to hit spain soon, luckily I got in. I took spain the following year and then struggled to get to portugal as England was now holding France in place while he cleaned up the rest of the north. Austria scared me a few times that he may attack but with Turkey holding out at 3 centers and difficult to eliminate he was focused on that. England looked to be the solo threat, until he NMRd and then it became apparent that Austria was the solo threat when he crossed the stalemate line and all he needed was venice, naples, rome. England let off and I was able to put my fleets in an unbreakable position to secure the 3 way draw.
2ndWhiteLine (2611 D(B))

England was never a true solo threat, even with Berlin he still would have needed either Rome or Naples, which he never would have gotten. You're probably lucky that Czech drew after you NMRed; otherwise, I was probably the bigger threat to solo after I took Venice.
Gen. Lee (7588 D(B))

Gen. Lee (7588 D(B))
28 Jan 13 UTC
Well he certainly needed Tunis for the solo, but there was a gap at the livonia/prussia area that could have been exploited. I was stuck waiting for either to recognize they werent the solo threat before I could move to stalemate.

The last game of the tournament, gameID=106913, has ended with a josnice solo. Nicely done! Final standings are as follows:

Fairfax: 354/386/141/188/236/375/0 = 1680
Gen. Lee: 0/84/236/141/236/0/354 = 1,051
Josnice: 250/375/0/0/0/141/86 = 852
2ndwhiteline: 0/236/43/0/0/236/63= 578
The Czech: 236/0/0/0/0/150/0 = 386
Partysane: 0/0/0/0/84/0/141 = 225
Kompole: -/141/0/0/43/0/0 = 184

Congrats to Fairfax on absolutely owning this tournament. I expect that Fairfax and Josnice will get a nice GR boost from the games as well. Overall, I had quite a bit of fun. This final game actually saw the PPSC element dictate end of game play, which was disappointing but not overly surprising. Had Austria stayed in Tunis, we could have delayed the solo for a few more turns, but Italy was in such a bad position that it was really inevitable.

I know Lando has a gunboat tournament coming up, but I'd like to do this again, albeit not in conjunction with his because fourteen games at once is a bit too many.
Gen. Lee (7588 D(B))
30 Jan 13 UTC
I got sandwiched by Russia and Italy, and had thought this would be one of my better games. PPSC definitely came out when italy disbanded his fleet out of Symrna. My hope was getting to tunis and causing him to send his 2 fleets to stalemate the med., but then Russia quit protecting his north so it was all a CF. Oh and Turkey was so grateful of my supports to pull him back from one unit that he knocked me out of the game :/.

Fun tournament. Thanks Josnice.
josunice (3702 D(S))
30 Jan 13 UTC
I admit I considered delaying another year to pick up another 40 D, but it seems a bit whorish (not beneath me, mind you). I jumped into a set of games and I am also ready for Lando's gunboat tourney. I will look to run this format again, maybe with a few flights followed by a champions round. I'll start a thread to gather interest so we can put it up quicker once Lando is done with his monkey business. I was thinking @75 WTA no press -- buyin will then be easier to reach at @525. I'd rather not lower it further, as playing for sport is all well and good, but there needs to be enough skin in the game, too. Also, what do you guys think about non-anon and public press to allow for banter but no back dealing?
Fairfax (1915 D)
30 Jan 13 UTC
Well, this tourney was fun. Thanks everyone for the games. I am definitely up for another round. I don't really care if you want to do this now or after Lando's tournament finishes, I would be ok with playing both at the same time, but if you guys don't want to then I guess we wait with this. I would also prefer the same or higher stakes and WTA, but that's up to josunice of course.
Gen. Lee (7588 D(B))
30 Jan 13 UTC
I like playing non-anon gunboat, but the ability to influence the game even accidently with comments I dont think PP would work. Its also tough to play non-anon in a tournament style, but the leagues do it.
josunice (3702 D(S))
30 Jan 13 UTC
OK - I'll start a thread soon. I will definitely go to WTA and leave as anon and no press. Maybe we can get three flights going and play a champion round. Maybe 75@ a game, then 125@ final round? At 101@ up front, it was hard to get the 7, let alone 21 or so...
