Get my points off Facebook
Hey all, I've been playing FB Dip for some time (oldschool phpDiplomacy), but have lost interest. Since I'm starting from scratch again here, I was wondering whether it's possible to transfer my thousand odd points from FB Dip to here? It's not the same community, but it is the same platform. Possible or no?

What has Curiosity found on Mars? - A poll (definitely not a +1 scam)
It's common knowledge that this forum is home to some of the most intelligent lifeforms in the Milky Way. To harness this incredible brainpower for the good of mankind, we should use the power of crowdsourcing to predict groundbreaking events in advance, so as to buy people time to prepare for them. By utilizing the best social networking invention ever, the +1, we can accurately conclude which opinion prevails in the webDip community.

The Importance of Being Diplomatic
With all the chest-pounding that goes on around here about who's a better player than who, it seems clear that some people place far too much emphasis on what goes on on this site, to the point of tying their performance to their overall feelings of self-worth.

This will probably get me mocked.
Can we set up a donation system to allow for skilled players to enter higher stakes games earlier?
smcbride1983 (517 D)
21 Nov 12 UTC
In light of the FBdip question, I have a suggestion. Could we do something like they do in the casinos? What I mean is, I can go to Treasure Island and get my little card with 100 free spins on the old slot machine, but it doesn't equate to real money unless I win X points.

If it were modified here, we could have an option to buy points, but the bought points would only be equated to real points once they were used in a game. So I could be a new member and still get my 100, but I could also lay 10 bucks down to get an extra 100. That way I can support the site and play in games with over 100 buy in.

But, The site can keep its ranking system, because, for ranking position, I will only be ranked on points obtained from games I played + that initial 100. That would go for PPSC as well. So if I join a 200 point game and I survive with 1 SC I would only retain the points I won. I think if people have some money invested in the games they would also be less likely to CD.

Or, as I think about it, maybe, once you get to a certain point you can make a donation that would get your minimal point limit raised. So I get to 500 D and pay 10 or 20 bucks and if I go below 500 then I am restored to that amount. I think this would make the whole ranking system less important, but it would let skilled players risk more points knowing they can still play in higher stakes games if they lose it all.

I know nothing about coding so Draug, and others please let me know if this is way beyond what the developers are willing to do for free. I also am not sure about legality. But, if this was set up so it is a donation based system, I think you can give rewards to people who donate. I am not a lawyer so I am not sure. And, I know kestas wants to keep this free so it may be completely against his philosophy.

The first question I would ask is: why do you care about points? Pot size is no indication of quality of game.
Draugnar (0 DX)
21 Nov 12 UTC
I would be concerned more with the legal issues and it being viewed as a pay site which would surely garner the attention of the copyright holders.
Skittles (1014 D)

That isn't a system to let skilled players play in higher stakes games, it's a ssystem for players willing to spend money play in higher stakes games.

Im not commenting on whether the idea is good or bad, but I want to ppoint out that money is the quality this idea rewards, not skill.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
21 Nov 12 UTC
And a follow-up: wouldn't you care even less if you knew you could just buy your way into high pot games?
smcbride1983 (517 D)
21 Nov 12 UTC
I really don't care about points. Some people really do. I think points are looked at as a status symbol by some and allowing people to buy them would definitely deteriorate that. The main thing I was thinking of was a way for people who want to play with more points, such as the guy from FBdip, and turn that into site maintenance money.

Draug, that was my main concern as well.
smcbride1983 (517 D)
21 Nov 12 UTC
Skittles, You are right, but, my thought is that it will mostly attract people who are willing to spend money to get in the high stakes games. Like in poker, there will be shit players who are willing to put up the dough to play with the big boys, but generaly speaking the majority of people willing to put up the buy in will at least think they are good enough to win.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

AFAIK, the site doesn't need money at the moment. Furthermore, we've had very successful fundraisers in the past. If we did need money, I suspect we could raise it very quickly.

Before I managed to get a decent number of points I was still able to play with a lot of excellent players in a tournament with 5 point buy in's. Since then I've played with most of the top players on the site and I have yet to put more then 300 D into any game I've played. I think the theory behind the points is that people are less willing to play foolishly, CD, or mess up a game in any other way if they have to spend a lot of time gathering enough points to join a game. For anyone with a bit of spare cash this incentive would go away if we allowed people to simply buy points.

Additionally with what abge and Draug pointed out, the site isn't in need of money, and due to the copyright of the game we don't want to start changing people money to play.
"The first question I would ask is: why do you care about points? Pot size is no indication of quality of game. "

This is not true in any way shape or form, abge. Sure, there are low pot games that are high quality. However, a high pot indicates a certain quality to all potential players.

I think it is ridiculous that people are representing that players do not care about points. Players should and do care about points and those who are claiming otherwise likely are saying this because they are either content with their point level or embarassed.
Play low pot games and you might get stuck with players like Draugnar in your games.

Draugnar (0 DX)
21 Nov 12 UTC
@Lando - *Some* players care. Abge said as much. Bit not all do. I don't. And I'm not embarrased in any way by my points. My GR indicates I'm in the top 250 players on this site and I don't even care about that anymore. I care aboit having fun playing a challenging game with other skilled players.

And your statement that players should care aboit points? Total bullshit. Your opinion may be that points matter but implying your standards should apply to everyone is complete and utter bullshit. Likewise your opinion ofbwhy points don't matter to some.of us is *also* complete and utter bullshit. Until you become Diplomacy God and can speak with the authority on the game equal to Mr. C himself, you opinion of my motives and what I (and other players) should care about and why we don't is just your opinion and carries no more weight than my own view that points are not a measure of shit do to point farming in PPSC.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

I don't like playing in high pot games because I fear it'll just turn into a points grab. First three countries to get "big" will just eliminate the others and draw. I'm sure there are good exciting high pot games, as I said it is just a fear.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
21 Nov 12 UTC
That is the problem I have with high point games as well, Alderian.
That is not my impression of high pot games at all - it gives even more incentive to win. If you don't care about points you shouldn't care about losing a bunch in a big pot game. You have enough, abge.

In my opinion, I will join high-pot games in the open games page before low pot ones because I can vouch to a higher degree for the skills of my opponents. If I lose my points, I lose them, but hopefully it was worth it to play against good players.

I can agree that bad players can still accumulate points given the right circumstances, however, there are fewer bad players with high points than bad players with low points.

To continue, I do not believe that pass worded games help that much unless you are really sticky about who you actually give the password to. Most of the time, anybody who rpelies gets in a game and the organizer is not too picky. I have seen first hand how players who appear good on paper (say, medium points, few resigns, moderate stats) end up being bad players and you're stuck with them screwing your game up. Like Draugnar, for instance.

Also, top 250 in GR is not really saying much, is it?
Alderian (2425 D(S))
21 Nov 12 UTC
@Lando, you appear to be missing the point. It isn't a fear of losing points. It is a fear of being in a game where enough other players are just going for a quick draw for the points that it is a waste of a game.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
21 Nov 12 UTC
I also don't believe in eliminating smaller countries for the purpose of "improving the draw". Eliminate someone to improve your odds of soloing? Of course. Eliminate someone because they were a pain in your butt and you want them out? Sure. But to "improve the draw"? No. A draw is a draw. And I fear that a large pot will also encourage that "improving the draw" tendency.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
21 Nov 12 UTC
Exactly. I don't care about gaining or losing points. What I care about is people who prioritize gaining points over other things.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
21 Nov 12 UTC
In any case, Lando, the point of this OP was to allow people to buy points. Wouldn't you agree this is a bad idea in any case because either:

1) Points are meaningless and we'd turn into snake oil salesmen, or
2) Points have meaning that would be lost when you can simply buy them.
zultar (4180 DMod(P))

I don't know why you keep on attacking Draugnar. I've had my share of differences with him, but it's usually over something he has said. As far as I can tell, he didn't say anything to you before you started going after him personally, and he talked about the idea and not the person. And then you go after his record?
What the hell?
What's with the ad hominem attacks?
I think people prioritize winning over losing, regardless of points. People with more points are better at winning so the higher the buy-in the more challenging the game. There will be people who play as you describe in any game for multiple reasons - because people care about GR, because that is an ideological point they have about the game (talk to gramilaj on this one) or for various other reasons.

I completely disagree that the more points in a game that people's incentives will change, other than they will have more incentive to try harder, which is a good thing.

I have seen twice in two threads today people saying that points are meaningless and this is just a blatant lie, that is why I joined this thread. I do agree with abge that the idea in the OP is not one we should adopt.

In response to zultar, I use draugnar as an example because it helps prove my point. He plays passworded protected low point game via forum threads, which you's are saying keeps bad players out. However, Draugnar is a bad player therefore your points are satisfactorily rebutted.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
21 Nov 12 UTC
On what basis do you claim Draug is a bad player?
Personal experience, but we don't need to continue discussing this.
Draugnar (0 DX)
22 Nov 12 UTC
Personal experience? Interesting. My peak is 71st I believe. You are currently 90th. I started dropping when I stopped worryinag about GR and just wanted to have fun. I have more fun at 200 something than I ever had sub 100 because I was so afraid to lose I played it safe and mundane. So, lando, ar eyou in the Leagues? I ask because I wonder where you are at there... I have progressed up a league every season by winning or strong seconding the league I was in. I have actually had two wins in the same season, something only a half dozen other players have done. And I am currently tied for second with 4 D and 12 SCs in A*, the top league.

I've proven my skill numerous times at full press. I won't deny I suck at gunboat cause I do. I don't read intent in other's moves well. I also suck at PPSC because I have a WTA mindset and don't see the strong second point farming until it is too late.

But enough on that.

The fact is, a mediocre player can play PPSC all day long and rack up points with strong seconds. But a 5 point WTA passworded game takes real skill to win and there are plenty here who have done that even though they don't have the points. I really wish the point system would go away and there would be a different qualifier for game creatiuon that requires a certain nuymber of games completed and a certain maximum number of CDs with both a better CD and NMR record kept.
Draugnar (0 DX)
22 Nov 12 UTC
Lando - You are a live gunboat player. Take me on in my turf and see who the better player is there. Live gunboat is a different game from 1-2 day phase full press.

I will post a challenge thread if you have the balls to take me up on it. 5 point buy in 24 hour turns full press WTA. You can choose anon or not.
I've played in the leagues once, I won my league with two solos ;-)

Anyway, we've played each other before but if you insist on us playing again, fine.
ghug (5068 D(B))
22 Nov 12 UTC
Draug, I personally do think that you're a good player, but that was an awful argument. First, comparing your peak to his current is invalid, as Lando has most certainly breached the top 50. Second, asking him if he's in one specific tournament that you play has no relevance here, not only because the leagues were designed so that you would do well as you were playing your way up, but also because one small group of games is not a good indicator of general performance. Third, just because somebody plays live gunboats doesn't make them bad at other game types (unless it's SplitDiplomat or Zmaj), Lando is quite good at full press too. Lastly, challenging somebody to specific conditions and then accusing them of being afraid of you if they don't want to play for whatever reason is a bit silly, especially when your phase length is so short.
Draugnar (0 DX)
22 Nov 12 UTC
1 or 2 days is a short phase length? Huh, ghig? I jusdt really wanted to throw down the Gauntlet to Lando cause he said I was the bad player. I never claimed he was bad, but I had to talk smack. Otherwise it would have been a one sided smack fest and what fun are those? Can you imagine the WWE with one player going "Oh yeah, I'm gonna rip out your spine and show it to you!" and the other going "That's nice. You are good. I respect you. Let's just have our match." It just doesn't work unless both talk smack. K?
