Question to the Yankees: how is Jon Stewart *not* your President yet? That was not debating, that was art.

What is a romantic yet not romantic gift for someone?
OK, so I have my "office wife" who I flirt with (no harm in flirting as long as it stays flirting) and I plan to bring gifts back with me from Canada tomorrow. I got all my wife's stuff, and got stuff for a couple of my male coworkers, but I need something for my flirtatious (and very cute) "office wife." Not too romantic that it goes over the line, but something mroe than a fridge/desk magnet. Any ideas?

I keep forgetting which rule takes precedence
1. A unit that has been dislodged cannot affect the province that dislodged it.
2. A unit can't cut support directed toward the province it is in.
ghug (5068 D(B))

The dislodgement takes precedence.

Suppose I haven't been playing enough lately, I don't see the contradiction, don't they both apply at all times, neither taking precedent over the other?
Gobbledydook (1389 D(B))
05 Oct 12 UTC
Example:

Austria:
Vie s Bud - Gal
Bud - Gal
Russia:
Gal - Vie
Boh s Gal - Vie
War - Gal

In this case, although Gal - Vie usually does not cut the support given by Vie, since Vie is dislodged the support is voided and War/Bud bounce in Galicia.

Thanks for the explanation, Gobble, I had no clue what red was asking, and for some reason I wanted to know...

Yeah, I couldn't really understand what was being asked either until I saw you list moves and ran it through Realpolitk. Makes sense now.
redhouse1938 (429 D)
05 Oct 12 UTC
What would that reason be MadMarx?
TheJok3r (765 D)

I think that was just his diplomatic way of saying, "For some reason I cared".
redhouse1938 (429 D)

I don't think so Jok3r ;-)

Rule #2 is just badly worded. It should be sg. like:

A unit can't cut support directed toward the province it is in, unless it dislodges the supporting unit in which case the support is void..
orathaic (1009 D(B))
05 Oct 12 UTC
A unit can't cut support (of an attack) on the territory it is in, but in the example above it moves to vienna and this it isn't in gal...

I think this rule makes intuitive sense but it is hard to construct rules which conform to your intuitive guess. Hence the difficulty in the wording of the rules.
rokakoma (19138 D)
05 Oct 12 UTC
The example above show that gal attacking vie actually DO CUT the support against Gal, resulting budapest and warshaw bounces, because Budapest doesn't have support. And that support was cut by galicia, the unit which was on the target territrory, and which, according to the #2 rule, can't cut it. So the wording is simply bad. That unit did cut support against the territory it was on.
rokakoma (19138 D)
05 Oct 12 UTC
Or you should have a rule with higher priority which says:
"Dislodged unit can't support any other unit in any way"

But if you declare such a rule, then the user still have to figure out the situation above. It's easier to add those few words I guess.
redhouse1938 (429 D)
05 Oct 12 UTC
The best way may be to formulate it the way I formulated it above: that one rule simply takes precedence over the other. It's not too mathematical that way.

Also, can a mod close this thread? It's becoming a train wreck. Thanks everyone :-)
rokakoma (19138 D)

My bad, rule #1 says the same, you are right redhouse. That's has the preference
MadMarx (36299 D(G))
05 Oct 12 UTC
redhouse, the reason I was curious was because I assumed your confusion over a rule took precedence over me not understanding the confusion, and my instinct was right, I was confused!

Anyway, if you look in the actual rule book, http://www.diplom.org/~diparch/resources/rulebooks/2000AH4th.pdf , you will see the following on page 10:

"Support is cut if the unit giving support is dislodged. If a unit ordered to support another unit is dislodged by an attack from any province (including the province into which it is giving support) then the support is "cut". The unit that was to receive support does not receive it."

Thanks MM, I actually thought just asking the question on the forum and waiting for someone to answer who knew it by heart would be faster than looking it up. I am that lazy.

Eric Hobsawn, Companion of Honour
I gather the recently deceased unreconstructed Stalinist Eric Hobsawn became a Companion of Honour in 1998, during Blair's period in office. I was wondering, even if by analogy, whether all terrorists eventually get to take tea with the Queen?
