Austria's Poor Performance
I'll admit, I'm pretty new to playing Diplomacy online. I never thought of Austria as a poor draw, but it seems to get eliminated first in almost every game I've seen on this site, crushed between its three neighbors. I always thought Italy and Austria were a sure thing as allies, but Italy almost always seems to turn on Austria in 1901 here. Anybody got an good theories?

What an original and refreshing thread.
And I shall post an original and refreshing reply.

Some people need the full phase length because of RL issues. Some people need to negotiate more, and some people just need to sleep on their orders and see if they think the same way in the morning. Deal with it.

rokakoma (19138 D)

Some people have serious bathroom problems if they need those 5 minutes EVERY time. A live game lastin 4-6 hours could easily be 2-3 hours without these guys ...

Not everyone is as good at seeing all the possible moves on the board as you and the other pro gunboaters, not saying there aren't some jerks who just do it to annoy people, but some newer players actually need the time to check their orders.
rokakoma (19138 D)
15 Sep 12 UTC
When you have two options to retreat, or you can leave only one unit on the map, what the heck are you thinking??? If you have one unit, then press ready and let the others play...

I'm not talking about 16 unit orders, just 3-4
cspieker (18223 D)
15 Sep 12 UTC
How about those with 1 unit, making their final retreat or destroy, hitting save instead of ready. That's really dickish, but it happens all the time. I guess a lot of people feel like they deserve their little tantrum when they lose.
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

cspieker - If people aren't courteous to me and give me the respect I deserve as a player (ie. answering my press) then fuck them they can wait while I die. That's probably the case, though the anger may not be against you
jmo1121109 (3812 D)

In a gunboat it's just being a sore loser to not ready your orders once you're down to 1 or 2 centers.

Here's one for you. I have a single build to issue. I know what I'm building, but I have a poker tournament for charitu tomorrow evening and am.catching the fligt to Calgary Sunday afternoon. So I'm not readying this build or the moves I will do tomorrow so that I can get my traveling done, get some rest, and teach the class Monday morning with a little time to see if I have any retreats to worry about before heading in to said class. Am I an asshole because all this weak I will be taking the full 25 hours per tirn (and next week too as I repeat the trip for week two next weekend)?
Draugnar (0 DX)
15 Sep 12 UTC
Even deciding which of two units to disbanded may take some.time. Which unit provides you with the best possible chance for a survive or might be best used to help your ally against your enemu at the last?
akilies (861 D)
15 Sep 12 UTC
Why not just type "fuck" and "fucking" for fuck's sake?
Draugnar - nope you're not a asshole. But a player EVERY SINGLE PHASE clicks save... one retreat, one disband, one build... and he knows he's getting smashed. You'd have conclude he was doing it be a dick.
Maniac (189 D(B))

On the occasion where players are trying to annoy you, or you think they re trying to annoy you, have you ever thought of.....wait for it.....not getting annoyed? Don't play there games, don't let them know it gets to you and never, ever argue with those idiots, they will bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.
I hear you. Easier said than done, Maniac.

I like pressing ready if I am ready. If I expect a mail from Russia regarding how we gang up on Austria, I don't press it yet. If I am debating whether or not to betray England and go into the Channel, I don't press it yet. Most of all, I don't urge anyone to press it, I've joined a (say) 48hrs turn time game because I'm OK with a turn lasting 48hrs.

I don't get what losing people hope to accomplish with it. If I will ever be on the recieving end of this, I'll enjoy my slow cruise to victory and maybe start another game.
rokakoma (19138 D)
15 Sep 12 UTC
The basic topic is about LIVE GUNBOATs, not full press, neither normal phase games.

The problem in live games is, withholding ready basically doubles the game length, wasting other players' time for nothing.
Hydro Globus (100 D)

I thought the basic topic was about "just press it, really, it's not a big thing at all ... "

I wasn't clear enough, I was playing a live game yesterday evening, and I was pissed at one of the players and didn't bother to be specific :) I tried to clarify it a few posts later. I'm just saying, because, personally I have no problem at all with just saving in normal games, before someone concludes I do. ;)

orathaic (1009 D(B))

Readying is always an option; if you joined a 5 minutes game then expect to play moves every minutes.

If you don't like the phase length then you don't have to play.

imho.
rokakoma (19138 D)

Draug: you are right, but I wasn't thinking clearly/calmy, I was sooo upset. Next time I take a deep breath before I post ;)
cspieker (18223 D)

In terms of my specific gripe (the player who has just lost his last supply center, so it matters not what he does, but he purposely hits save to "punish" the other players because he is pissy that he lost), then this bitching thread may actually have a detrimental effect. Now those bastards will know that this drives us *CRAZY*, so they will do it even more as it will make them feel very powerful, superior and happy that their theft of our 4 minutes has such an effect.

*SIGH* there's no easy solutions
If you don't want your time wasted playing a board game on the internet, stop wasting your time playing a board game on the internet.
cspieker (18223 D)
15 Sep 12 UTC
Yes, those all or nothing solutions are *always* (or never?) the best!
The game takes a while to play. Pretty much everyone posting here knows that. No, you can't force people to Ready... So what kind of suggestions are you looking for? Should the site be recoded to suit your wishes?

Sorry, I know it's not the answer you want to read, but it's true: You're wasting your own time by playing at all (especially live games). If you're frustrated by it, try & doing something more productive?

rokakoma (19138 D)

@twa: I don't have problem with a game taking 2-3-4 hours, my problem is, when somebody has no choice but to disband his unit, or to retreat to 1-2 available places, or to build/disban 1-2 units only and he presses 'save' and forces 6 other people to wait.

I don't think the 'net plaing time' of the game is a waste at all, of course I don't otherwise I wouldn't play. But when I sit in front of my computer and all I'm doing is waiting for some ass becuase he couldn't press ready, that's the wasted part.

And yes, the soluton is not to play live games (at nromal phase you don't have to wait at all, because you don't sit in front of the computer for days), and I rarely play live games exactly for that reason. But when I try it again and again from time to time, I always hope playing culture has improved, respect of other players got better, common sense means something. And, sadly, I always have to disappoint none of the above has happaned. Then I start a thread, like this, to hyperventillate :) That's all. It just feels good to shout out ;)
cspieker (18223 D)
15 Sep 12 UTC
I agree with almost all the posts here.

Yes, we know what we are getting into here. It says 5-minute phases and we can't expect everyone who plays wants to have the game more quickly. I don't get upset about losing another couple of minutes, because hell I've already pissed away two hours of my life. What's another couple minutes?

That said, *if* there are people who are refusing to "ready" their orders for the express purpose of pissing people off. I would find that to be poor sportsmanship. That's all I'm really trying to say. I'm not trying to solve anything here, just asking that hypothetical poor sport what he/she is trying to gain? If it is a small bit of vengeance because they lost, then that is basically the definition of being a poor sport.
rokakoma (19138 D)

Another solution is, make the bet size 200-300 D, then I'll wait his 'Readiness' :)
orathaic (1009 D(B))

' I don't have problem with a game taking 2-3-4 hours, my problem is, when somebody has no choice but to disband his unit, or to retreat to 1-2 available places, or to build/disban 1-2 units only and he presses 'save' and forces 6 other people to wait.'

this is entirely YOUR problem. That person may want to go make some tea, or maybe rest their eyes while they take their focus off the game for a minute.

TV stations have ad breaks, and theatre companies have intermissions. Because it is sometimes helpful to have a break.

You sign up for a 5 minute game, that is what you are agreeing to.

It now sounds like you are whinging.

A pause is often not granted (in my limited experience of live games) but if you want to create/join a game with a specific rule on saving moves, then be my guest, create a game and password protect it. Then post the rule and password to a thread (ideally the live game adverts thread) And go ahead, having done something OTHER than whine on the forum to the rest of us...

If you want the culture to change don't sit around complaining about how bad things are DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

As Ghandi said: 'be the change you would like to see'
