Obama Orders More Deaths
It sounds outrageous at first glance, but my President, Barack Obama, just sentenced Americans to die needlessly today by signing higher CAFE standards so US cars will get more gallons per mile.
Study after study shows that CAFE standards killed between 40,000 and 125,000 Americans and crippled 350,000-625,000.

A "Super-Short" Story
I once submitted the following super-short story. It was word-count limited, and so the idea is that every word and thought must count. The idea is to give a quick scene that evokes and image, and allows the reader to create a whole back-story on their own...And now:

Question about retreats
Hey I was under the impression that if army 1 bounced with army 2 in territory A, but Army 1 was forced out of territory B by an Army 3, that army 1 could retreat to territory A. Yet, in a game situation this doesn't happen? Can someone explain this to me?

Capitalism in Modern America: Feifdoms Reborn
Read On....
krellin (80 DX)
30 Jul 11 UTC
From a principled standpoint, I am a Free Market Capitalist. I look back on the oginial American colonies, and the freedom...and cooperation...that allowed men to turn barely-surviving groups of men into a nation powerful enough to defeat their English Overlords.

Within 150 years of obtaining freedom, The United States became arguably the most powerful nation on earth. The United States led a continent in growth of ideas, inventions, power...such that when the need arised to defend allies in Europe, they were able to convert a domestic supply chain of automobile and other manufacturing into the greatest War Machine ever built.

I will grant the caviat that the Americas, being seperated from two World Wars by an ocean, did not suffer the destruction of said wars, and thus it can be said that the power of the US is not devired from their progress and freedom, but instead from their safety by distance....but I will counter that before these wars, the United States, in its relative isolation, grew and prospered and invented and gained wealth and power because Corporations were free to grow unchecked by government regulation.

....dot....dot...dot....

Today, we have a nation that, over the last 100 years, has come to embrace government regulation to "protect" the little man. We have come to embrace a tax system that didn't exist even in the imagination of politicians 100 years ago....and we are also ruled by Corporations that have a stranglehold upon society.

I recently started a business becuase I was unemployed, and decided to go it alone. I initially calculated the "pure" cost of doing business...the cost of my product, and the cost to sell it. I then started adding in to the equation expenses: Payroll taxes, income taxes, license fees, etc. A profitable business became barely worthwhile once I installed government into the equation.

But...my competition...the established corporations...they survive with the same equation. How?

GE....General Electric...made **billions** in profit...and yet they paid no taxes. (Coincidently, they have, 1: CLOSE relations with Obama....though tax code was in place before this relationship was in place.... and 2: they have been moving jobs over seas as fast as possible....)

To the main topic point....Feifdoms....

GE is a multipnational corporation that controls media organizations, that has close relations with the King...er....President Obama...and has enough lobbiests that the laws have been so deranged that a multi-billion dollar corporation pays no taxes.

HOW can I compete with GE?

I am a peasant who has found a sword and learned to fight well....

But the Tournament is rigged.

I can not start a business to compete against the big Multi-Nationals, because they set the laws, by BUYING the politicians.

The American Dream is dead. You will never be the bigges and the greatest....because those roles have been taken, and the government backs them through skewed tax policy.

Free Market capitalism works....once worked....but it no longer exists. And you....the little man scrounging for wages....begging for "benefits"....are the poor slob mucking through the field...

OK....vodka is involved in this....so if my writing is less than coherent at moments, I will blame Russia... :P But I *DO* feel like a peasant in a Corporate Feifdom. Do you???

That being said....Abge...smart guy that you are...I defy you to start a new smart search engine and compete against the establishment. and by "establishment", I mean the company that has legislative initiatives in their favor, the selectively ranks search result to favor donors, that has the media behind them...

Well, first off, I don't have any interest in search algorithms, so that would make your wager hard on me.

Also, for the sake of argument, let's assume that Google is in the pocket in the Democrats. At what point did this happen? Surely not when they first started. So, did they become successful before or after they sold their souls?

krellin (80 DX)
30 Jul 11 UTC
@Emperor....IS IT CAPITALISM when you earn your degree....work for the Corporation (that is, your feifdom's Lord of the Manor...) but can never "make it" beyond the predetermined status levels of "middle class" becuase you don't play the politics correctly? YOu may know how to grow the kingdom....but you can't win the Joust (the corporate politics) and thus you never will be Lord...King...of your domain...

Is it really capitalism when you sign your rights to ownership of intellectual property away? I've worked for at least three corporations now that made me sign a paper that said if I invented something...i.e. came up with a BRAND NEW IDEA out of MY OWN MIND....the corporation....the Lord....would OWN my idea.

THIS is free market capitalism? This is good? That an uninvolved executive will make millions of the sale of my product, while I get a Certificate of Recognition and a pizza party????

And yet corporations have made obtaining patent so expensive that most "normal" citizens can't obtain them???

Abge -- I was an engineer for Delphi Automotive Systems....right after they detached from GM. Every person I knew that obtained a patent suddenly discovered that not only his project manager was involved, but his bosses boss was involved and on the patent as well. The higher ups for the credit...the corporation got the profits....the engineer that envisioned and designed a new product....got a Hazzah! in a company meeting and a pizza party....Oh, and a nice plaque. yayyy....

@Krellin

I have a number of family members who are engineers, so I'm cognizant of this problem. Clearly, the company should get something for compensation of their resources, but it's a two way street. The engineer should be compensated better. Although, these seems to vary dramatically from company to company. In any case, this is one of the reasons I'm considering staying in Academia.

What was your company going to do?
krellin (80 DX)

I worked for Delphi Automotive...an automotive supplier, once a part of General Motors.

Here is a great example of design work unrecognized: The Federal Government passed an emission standard taht said you *MUSY* detect an 10,000th inch leak in an emissions system (read fuel tank). 10,000 of an inch....you got that? You know....becuase a hole that is ****freaking 10,000 of an inch small is going to destroy the planet...right? Thanks stupid asshole environmentalists....).

Anyway, GM said that detecting a hole that small is damned near impossible. How do you do it?

the answer is to pressurize the gas tank, and then read the bleed off in pressure. If there is a hole, pressure will bleed off. the problem is, gas evaporates at a rate related to temperature....and motion. cars are devices desinged to be in motion. thus....how do you figure out the apporopriate rate of pressure decay in a moving, evaporating system.....

If you are technical at all, you undestand the concern.

General Motors said, "It can't be done..."

Delphi said, "We can do it...." and I worked in the cubby-hole next the the former GE engineer that made it work.

He was brilliant.

He made it work....

and he received a plaque, a *very small* cash reward, and some jackass executive shook his hand.

He was a *brilliant* engineer. I was (am) an engineer and I was amazed by him.....and his *billion* dollar idea of how to detect this leak was....was just absorbed into he feifdom.

No doubt some dickhead manager three levels above him received more credit from the President of the corporation than the actual designer of the solution did.

FUCK modern day corporations.

Oh....nooo...I started a Vending business to generate a little cash. In truth, I still do my vending business....it is a stupid way to make cash (put food in a machine...charge double....)...but while I provide a desired service....the governemnt makes it so fucking difficult that I'm ready to quit.

My kids help me fill he mahcines...11 and 12 years old. Technically, do you know what I SHOPULD be doing? Paying my kids, paying federal taxes, etc.

In truth, I have NO IDEA if my business is legal....but my customers love me. I should be able to just please my customers, reports my gross profits and pay taxes on that....

....but it is so much more...so I cheat, no doubt. Not intentionally, because I trry to be legal.....but I seriously hve no idea what all the laws are that a0pply to me.

You have also seen my writing, I think. so, if I publish and make money....fucking jackass dickhead Obama gets a cut of my intellect? My effort is for Obama?

FUCK THAT. Fuck obama....and Bush before him...

Krellin, there are ways to get a business started today, the key is not to go into buisness providing a product a large company(ies) already successfully market(s). Entrepreneurship today relies upon new innovative ideas, for instance I would decide to become a refigirator manufactureur unless I had a great new idea on how improve a refrigerator. That would get the attention of venture capitalists, not the same old refrigerator that kenmore already makes...
And corporations have had a dominating role in America since at least the mid 19th century. By 1900 the average urban laborer was working on a dirty factory floor and living in a tenement, not exactly the vision of the American dream. In response to the conditions of what was virtually wage slavery and big corporate monopolies, progressives ushered in anti trust laws, and in response to one of the worst failures of buisness, the great depression, modern government regulation came into play. Today the big companies pump millions of dollars into washington in an attempt to further their interests, and the political right are the ones who defend corporatations the most, while the left generally limits the scope of corporate influence and has a more regulation policy. But at the end of the day both mainstream parties are just fronts for corporate interests to some extent, albeit the republicans are clearly in bed with corporations, while many of the democratic policies don't play into corporate hands. If we go to alternatives other than republicans and democrats, to parties on each side of the left and right spectrum from their are ideals that tend to ignore the direct corporate interests. Libertarianism on the right, and progressive socialism on the left. Libertarians suffer from the fact that they ignore the reality of the situation, that corporations are not responsible, and go past that and just shout less regulation until people's ears bleed, if the reality was not the case and corporations and big buisness could keep their shit together without fucking over people, communities, and the environment the libertarians would be scott free. Then progressive socialists that see the Scandinavian model as ideal as well as being influenced by environmentalism, labour parties, and internationalism, espouse the idea that regulations must be put in place to rein in the corporations and their irresponsible actions toward individuals and the environment, we must provide a society that does not leave the little man stranded working sweat shop conditions and living in a tenement but that helps him up and assures economic safety, and create a healthy free thinking society that rejects exclusivist and close-minded ideals in favor of openess and acceptance, and as for the little man who wants to start a company it's a whole different story and what is crucial is originality and ability to compete with competion if there is any, which in turn attracts money and new opportunities.
