Obama Orders More Deaths
It sounds outrageous at first glance, but my President, Barack Obama, just sentenced Americans to die needlessly today by signing higher CAFE standards so US cars will get more gallons per mile.
Study after study shows that CAFE standards killed between 40,000 and 125,000 Americans and crippled 350,000-625,000.

A "Super-Short" Story
I once submitted the following super-short story. It was word-count limited, and so the idea is that every word and thought must count. The idea is to give a quick scene that evokes and image, and allows the reader to create a whole back-story on their own...And now:

Question about retreats
Hey I was under the impression that if army 1 bounced with army 2 in territory A, but Army 1 was forced out of territory B by an Army 3, that army 1 could retreat to territory A. Yet, in a game situation this doesn't happen? Can someone explain this to me?

An Education in Economics
Conservatives and libertarians have the mistaken and ignorant idea that corporations can do no harm. And if there is a great reduction in extra-corporate governance of companies, they will play nice and everyone will be happy.

"webDiplomacy is moving to dedicated hosting! It won't happen overnight, but the wheels are in motion and we have enough funding for 3 years! Thanks to those who donated for helping make it happen."

Ok but right now this server is probably the worst online. Maybe we should switch to a Congolese one. it will probably be better...

I'm getting nervous
Somebody needs to raise the American debt ceiling very soon, or else America is finished. What do you think the implications are if Obama just decides to go around Congress and act unilaterally to raise the debt ceiling?
Invictus (240 D)

He won't do that. Obama has said that he doesn't believe that he has the power to raise the debt ceiling himself (and he totally doesn't, since the 14th Amendment is about the integrity of existing debt and not the issuance of new debt).

If the debt ceiling isn't raised America will not default. Something much worse and weirder without a good name will happen. Without the ability to borrow, the government can only pay for about 60% of its monthly obligations. Since bondholders will be prioritized and get first dibs on that money there will be no "default." The rest of that money can be split between Social Security, Medicare, and military pay, but after that there's no money left.

Think about that. I've never heard politicians say border guards will get their pay too. Or the foreign service working around the world to advance American interests. Even the bills to pay to keep the power on at the National Archives so the goddamn Declaration of Independence doesn't dissolve may not be payed!

Hopefully after beating the Democrats of almost everything else in this crisis the Republicans agree to an extension that goes past election day. They've totally triumphed in changing the narrative from one of lackadaisical deficits to a quest for fiscal responsibility. It was as recent as February (maybe even more recent) that Obama sent a budget with no attempt to rein in spending and reform entitlements at all! Republicans should merge the Reid and Boehner plans and turn their attention to passing a budget, which we haven't had in years.

I think he would get impeached immediately by the House of Representatives. The Senate would never convict, of course, but it would be a national nightmare nonetheless.

You are an adult Gunfight so get informed.
The United States defaulted on its debt on April 26, May 3, and May 10, 1979.
America wasn't finished.
Since Obama doesn't have the Constitutional authority to arbitrarily raise the debt limit if he did so it would mean impeachment and/or defeat in the 2012 election.

Obama making an unconstitutional overreach would be in the vicinity of Adam's signing the Alien, Sedition, and Naturalization Acts.
Political suicide.

The real threat is if we do not address the ticking time bomb of Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid spending.

Invictus (240 D)

The 14th Amendment issue is a non-story. Obama said he won't do it. Indeed, he said he CAN'T do it. Journalists who are tired of writing about the facts of the current crisis are the only people keeping this thing alive.

If I've heard correctly, US tax revenues were slightly more than expected, meaning that the default won't happen for a week or so later than predicted. That means we get to enjoy even more political sabre rattling :D.

No one seriosuly believes they won't do a deal, do they?
Gunfighter06 (224 D)

@ abgemacht

What if the Post Office closes? Just kidding. Postage is so damned expensive because the Postal Service does not use government money. It is an entirely self-sufficient agency.

@ TC

"The United States defaulted on its debt on April 26, May 3, and May 10, 1979.
America wasn't finished."

Things were a little different back then, TC. You and I both know that.

"The real threat is if we do not address the ticking time bomb of Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid spending."

You're right about that. Those three programs are all time bombs.

@ Octavious

"No one seriosuly believes they won't do a deal, do they?"

Like I said, I'm getting nervous. I think both sides are holding the American economy hostage in an attempt to win support for the 2012 elections. How much longer is the sabre rattling going to last?

Besides, we could lose our number one credit rating if this thing goes on for much longer, default or no default.

A close friend of mine has a degree in economics, and he's telling anyone who will listen to batten down their financial hatches. I'm thinking about putting my money in precious metals myself.

Convoy Errors
I'm currently playing a game - http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=64585 and I can't put orders in to convoy a unit. I could do it last turn, but when the UI changed, this problem started. I'll put in "convoy" an army to "_____" from "_____" and as soon as I put in the last setting, it resets everything and says "orders not completed" when I try and ready. Help?
