JDip or similar simulation program
I was wondering if anyone was having issues running JDip on Windows 7

Also, are there any other simulation programs out there to run moves through?

We gotta do something about players dropping
There is nothing more annoying than playing a 2 day deadline with 6 players who are on the ball, and then one guy who decides to drop the game. There has to be a bigger penalty for dropping out of games. I think it's really poor form to drop a game without good reason, so maybe there should be a way to just drop a game and take the penalty.

Favorite Classic Territory?
Some territories are just more fun to own than others, be it for strategic value or "nyah nyah" effect on other players. I love Serbia, since it gives you an SC and can impact so many crucial Balkan provinces without being touched by the many navies swarming about the Med and Black Sea. Anyone else have sentimental favorites?

There's been a lot of talk about self-moderated forums lately.
And that's fine. I'm at peace with idea. But since we are supposed to moderate ourselves, I'd like this forum to consider a proposal or two.
proposal 1: type out proposals before starting topic
Draugnar (0 DX)

Considered and rejected. :)

Damn it, Eden. You beat me to it.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
03 Jan 11 UTC
I have thought about it and agree that the best way to beat trolls is to totally ignore them.

So can we adopt a resolution that holds that you ignore someone if they offend you?

Secondly, can we stop making inane threads that never drop off the bottom? It's getting to be a bit much, for me anyway. I never like the last person to post thread, but I know its popular and I can live with it. But all these others? Come on.... Word association, infinite stories.... there are dozens of thread types that could go on forever but it would suck, so can we not make these threads?

Of course you are free to, but it would be nice if the "self-moderating" forum actually was able to produce some concrete results at some point.
Thucydides (864 D(B))

My internet connection went out sorry.
@Draug: ;)

@Thucy: Proposal one I already do (and, thus, support). Proposal two, agreed in principle, but what point is too many?
Draugnar (0 DX)

Like the new thread on self-moderation which is bound to turn into a discussion about how much self-moderation is too much and how much is too little and how much is just right?

OP +1.

Don't feed the trolls.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
03 Jan 11 UTC
No, it's self-moderation.

However much we decide to do is exactly enough. Lol. That's the whole idea.

Anyway, I would say right now is too many with every imaginable variation of last person to post threads.

That's my two cents. So if we can let all that aren't the original thread drop... I'd appreciate it, and I hope so would many of you, thus become an example of successful self-moderation.

And yeah the first proposal is harder than it sounds but I will sign my name here or in another thread to uphold it.
lol @ the person to post threads, I started one to troll last night and get on this morning to see like four more

I'd gladly let them all drop

I'll also sign off on prop one

Well, STLPTPW was meant to be a fun spoof but has suddenly become the altruistic version of LPTPW.

But I sign off on #1 and will do my best to only contribute to a few of the everlasting gobstopper threads.

@Thucy, the wonderful thing about these stupid threads, are indeed, that they are stupid. People will get bored of them and they'll drop. Give it a week, they'll all be gone, except the three traditionals, word association, lptp and live games.
Lives games is not really a stupid thread I don't think gigantor and shouldn't be in the same category.

Thucydides (864 D(B))

well anyway to anyone who actually fears some kind of draconian system

(i can't tell if you guys are joking when you say those things or not...):

this forum already is self-moderated in that it is not moderated. if a number of players mutually agreed not to feet trolls for example.... that would be nothing more than a mutual agreement. there is no moderation, you are not going to get banned for anything, you can still post whatever you want.

the worst thing that could happen is that every single player shuns you and doesnt speak to you. if this is happening to you, it is probably because you are the single worst troll on webdip who hasn't been banned yet. so maybe change your ways.

is that so bad?
gman314 (100 D)
04 Jan 11 UTC
LPTP is stupid. STLPTP is stupid too. The latter was fun to start and I bet the other was too but they're both utterly ridiculous. Word association I succeeded in getting back to the original word a couple thousand posts ago so now I find it stupid.
All in all, infinite threads are stupid and should go.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
04 Jan 11 UTC
As far as long threads go, personally I think its good to have the live games thread, and when used as a general chat the lptp is quite a nice one - have a look through it and you'll find some interesting conversations. Personally I don't like having the word-assoc thread up, but as with many find it simpler just to leave it.
These will (hopefully) clear up, and as long as they do there shouldn't be any need for more forum control [for this reason at least]
DJEcc24 (246 D)

people just need to act mature. ignore the trolls.

and i have always enjoyed some discussion threads but some threads are of no use. I'm getting tired of the constant feuding on here. its not like we really know anyone well enough to insult them. how can we judge total strangers.

its funny but the people that everyone has a problem with are the ones i get alogn with on here. draug is cool if you don't act stupid towards him. hellalt doesn't even blow up anymore.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
04 Jan 11 UTC
i will host a celebratory game with anyone and everyone the day one of the three falls off.

and i agree DJEcc24 it should be noted i am not thinking of anyone in particular, i am more trying to lay down some personal rules for myself to avoid and confrontations, also in the hope that others will follow and will have a much more fun-to-be-in forum.

but its whatever. i will also cut down on my cheerleading and activism and be quieter, if you like

Couldn't we get some buttons for each post? Like: 'edit', 'quote', 'delete' (if last post) and most on topic: 'report'. This is the only forum I know of that hasn't got these buttons or things like it. With the report button one could sent a PM or mail message directly at the moderating team (yes, we'll have to think up some way to prevent misuse').

What do you guys think? Is it possible?
hellalt (24 D)
04 Jan 11 UTC
I would rather see thumps up and down buttons.
report buttons are suitable for common forums of low intellect.
There are some important threads on the forum. And also some interesting or relevant discussions. These should be kept near the top whenever possible.
i dont think anyone seems to realize that LPTPW is immortal

Maniac (189 D(B))

I think we should combine the LPTPW thread with the never ending story thread. We will have to continue he LPTPW thread and highlight everyone on the never ending story thread to the fact that it has moved.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
04 Jan 11 UTC
@Ursa - Sure you could have a report button, but it would be completely useless without a mod team for it to send to! We are supposed to look after games, not the forum, and should not use the mod-actions for things on the forum. If we were told/allowed to try and control the forum (which I thin
figlesquidge (2131 D)
04 Jan 11 UTC
k would be a good thing, if only to a minimal degree (such as being able to delete certain posts - I can think of examples where no-one wanted a post to remain but we couldn't take it down)
Then it could be worth having a report button, although the modemail would still probably be the best way to deal with it.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
04 Jan 11 UTC
Sorry for triple posting - still haven't got used to the annoying placement of this mousepad, which keeps posting my messages half-written. :/
@Maniac - I'd agree with you there. Having one long rambling thread is quite nice, but it gets excessive
gman314 (100 D)
04 Jan 11 UTC
Another useless thread: Everyone who posts wins.
Just as a comment, have you seen how rediculous some global chats get. Those are self moderated. So, a self moderated forum wouldn't work.

Yeah, I don't know what you're talking about, gman.

This forum has been self-moderated for years now.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
04 Jan 11 UTC
Proposal two seems a little draconian.

i don't see why we should limit the pointless crap that some people choose to post in.

It's like saying that certain types of threads are a waste of time, i can imagine some people would go so far as to claim this thread was a waste of time and we should let it drop off.

I'd prefer to see a proposal on derailing threads.

With a possible responce to trolls being "Off-topic, please make your own thread about it (OT: pmyotai)"
orathaic (1009 D(B))
04 Jan 11 UTC
@Quote, edit, delete etc.

i think the design decision was to make this as simple a forum as possible.
You do not need a complex forum to organise a game of diplomacy (as compared with the developers forum, which is much more like a normal webforum)

KISS principle along with community building (by focusing all threads onto one page) has been rather succesful imho.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
04 Jan 11 UTC
once again to all.... it is not a proposal that will be forced on anyone, because, in a self-moderated forum, that is impossible.

rather it is a suggestion that i hope would gain popular support thereby reducing the prevalence of, in this case, what i see as inane and annoying threads.

so it is merely a voluntary compact to pledge to think before you post, and, remember that discretion is the better part of valor.

and also to, if you like, not post in the never-ending threads, or, at least, choose one and post only in that one. then if coordinate *which* one, these others will see their deaths.

and i am not really counting the live games thread as i realize that is totally different.

hope that clears it up.
Draugnar (0 DX)
04 Jan 11 UTC
But I like STLPTPW and LPTPW as well as Word Association. Can't I post in those three? Please?
Maniac (189 D(B))
04 Jan 11 UTC
Sorry Draugnar - I think self -regualtion works best if we buddy up and i've *won* you in the lottery. I have to self regulate you and you have to self regulate me. So no more posting in those three threads ever.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
04 Jan 11 UTC
lol yes you can draug im just asking that you not.

i am resigned to lptpw, indeed i agree that an ongoing conversation is fine.

word assoc.... has lost its value imho, and sltptpw.... well.... yeah. i won't get into it.

I'm assuming this means the impact on society, not personal favorate, best, or most realistic. I'd have to say Star Trek. The 1960s series not only spawned new series and several movies, inspired many scientist and enginers and innovators, and affected peoples veiws of the world.
