I was wondering if anyone was having issues running JDip on Windows 7

Also, are there any other simulation programs out there to run moves through?

We gotta do something about players dropping
There is nothing more annoying than playing a 2 day deadline with 6 players who are on the ball, and then one guy who decides to drop the game. There has to be a bigger penalty for dropping out of games. I think it's really poor form to drop a game without good reason, so maybe there should be a way to just drop a game and take the penalty.

Draw/Pause/Cancel in Gunboat
I'd like some gunboat enthusiasts' opinions on this...

The rules say that the Pause feature is not a diplomatic tool. It means that you can't refuse to unpause because you're losing. What about the Draw and Cancel buttons though? They can be used as rudimentary forms of communication to signal an alliance, ie. Everyone teams up on the guy refusing to draw.

This could be taken to the extremes too: Everyone who votes cancel at the beginning of the game is on one team. There's also a team "Team Pause" and a "Team Draw". I'm not suggesting that this happens, (I think the first situation mentioned above does to an extent) but what is everyone's thoughts on it?
In the late game I think pressing Draw is definitely an allowable form of communication. It says, yes I am committed to stopping the solo. I don't think Pause or Cancel should be diplomatic tools. If people are using them as communication beyond "I need to go please pause" or "there was a CD i vote cancel" I would call it sketchy. Not necessarily cheating, but wrong to an extent.

Pause & Cancel are not diplomatic features.

Draw is part of the game and should be played as such.

I think the desperation sign Pause/Draw/Cancel all at the same time is a valid form of expressing frustration. :-)

I agree with Lando. Draw is definitely a common way of signalling dedication to building a stalemate line.

In terms of live gunboats, even if it isn't intended as a diplomatic tool, I still will look for who presses cancel after a no show or early CD. That way, if the game does not cancel, I know which players are more experienced and knowledgeable about live game etiquette.

I must admit I'd quite like to see the vote options placed at different locations - perhaps with the cancel/pause options at the bottom of the page. That might make it a little clearer that they shouldn't be treated in the same way

This is smiles, I'm sitting lentz account for a live game tonight:

Ideally I would say that none of them are diplomatic tools. But can you risk not taking that into consideration when other players might?

Draw is definitely a diplomatic tool though?

Smiles again:

I would say that ideally, it wouldn't be. If Draw is, why not use it at the beginning of the game to try and get someone on your team?
A draw is a diplomatic outcome to a game. Whereas a cancel is not and a pause is there to facilitate the game. So I don't see why the draw is not a diplomatic tool. I mean, you could press draw at the start of the game but it doesn't really say much other than "this guy is not playing to win"

I often press draw for lolz when I'm obviously losing. That's not so much a diplomatic tool as a white flag.
yeah and a just-in-case tactic. I've had people draw a game when I am about to disband my last units so it works on the very rare occasion.

I was in a live game earlier where someone CD'ed in 1901. All the rest of us hit draw except Austria. In 1903, they got reduced from 6 SC's to a poor army wandering in Warsaw, and THEN hit draw. None of us had taken it off.

Favorite Classic Territory?
Some territories are just more fun to own than others, be it for strategic value or "nyah nyah" effect on other players. I love Serbia, since it gives you an SC and can impact so many crucial Balkan provinces without being touched by the many navies swarming about the Med and Black Sea. Anyone else have sentimental favorites?

There's been a lot of talk about self-moderated forums lately.
And that's fine. I'm at peace with idea. But since we are supposed to moderate ourselves, I'd like this forum to consider a proposal or two.

The most important scifi story every told.
http://www.space.com/common/forums/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=27719 What do you think is the most important scifi story every told? I'm assuming this means the impact on society, not personal favorate, best, or most realistic. I'd have to say Star Trek. The 1960s series not only spawned new series and several movies, inspired many scientist and enginers and innovators, and affected peoples veiws of the world.
