Some sites have a function where you can voluntarily ban yourself for a given period. I play a MUD called discworld.imaginary.com, for example. That has a command where you can ban yourself from logging in for a specified period. It's a good way of avoiding temptation when you have exams etc.

You have 5 games going on - this should not take you more than 5 min X couple of times a day. Do your work and help at home.

@Ivo-yeah , most days it works alright. More like 10-15 mins a few times/day. But this weekend, I went visiting and the wifi at the cabin went out and I had to keep driving into town for the local coffee shop. If I had known that, I would not have been in a game with a 12-hr deadline. My family was ticked!

oh i bet. i get ribbed for it as well. definitely joining longer phase games is good, and set aside specific time to play. that way you're not constantly getting on the site. trips are the hardest, so i usually either let people know i might NMR or be less chatty, or i ask for a pause if i have to. but really, what's more important? having a nice weekend visit or taking munich? and yeah it sucks for others if you NMR, but such is life. just make sure you have your priorities - and diplomacy online probably shouldn't be one of them.

Terri - get yourself a cellular card or have cellular broadband added to your cellphone's service. Then, as long as you have power and can get a cell signal, you are good to go.

@ Draugnar-good idea, except I just spent several months complaining to my husband that he was always on his iphone-at the movies, on vacation,etc. After several months, I think I've won that battle, but now he is after me about diplomacy.

@crazyter - so don't join any new games. that will help. just play the others out. and when you have free time and you're thinking "maybe i should join a new dip game" do something else. like practice with your side arm. or call up an old friend. or have a drink. (now that's where i need an intervention...)

As others have stated... get in longer term games. I hate joining games that have a turn less than 24 hours. In fact, with football season (my very busy time of year), I may not be able to join anything less than 36 hours.

36 and 48 hour games are what you need. You can spend an entire day and not 'have' to communicate, and still have time to get in some diplomacy and moves before the turn is up. Plus that extra time can be nice if you are slowly turning someone to your side. Longer games make for better games, IMHO...

There are sites for game addiction. You may look there.

Start playing Diplomacy FtF. At the university I played the game 'Empire' which
updates during the day. After that, I decided not to play any games without a
clear end, or that does not end within a few hours. So, I also do not play role
playing games, I also do not play on this site, although I am still interested in
Diplomacy.

Buy a board game and play that with your friends. For instance Puerto Rico.
Then you start the evening, you play the game, and at the end it is over.

Im hoping the sidearm practice comes before the drinking, otherwise hospital connection to Dip wouldn't really solve your problem.

Crazy- Start cooking, ive got some decent veggie recipes that will take your time up, give you something else to do AND keep you away from the laptop but more importantly fill your belly to bursting!

Haha my parents ended up blocking phpdiplomacy.net then I switched over to webdiplomacy.net which wasn't banned and started to play again.

I'm not addicted to Diplomacy....just the internet. Which happens to house diplomacy.
From what advice I teenager can give, I'd just say this-
-Stop yourself from playing at work with punishment for each time you do it, by say, I dunno. For each week you manage not to play at work, give yourself a night out, or something you normally don't get. Do the same for home, but limiting yourself to say, 1 hour of diplomacy a day. Keep a timer. Click it every time you log on.
-Finish your games, then take a week long trip somewhere nice. Like Hawaii, or Vancouver, somewhere where you won't have internet.
-Treat it like an alcohol addiction....sign up for an inpatient treatment, and see how that goes.

When I first started here a few months back I was playing too much and not getting enough work done. I was playing 4-5 games at a time with 24 hour phases.

I toned it down after that deciding to only play in 2 or 3 games at a time and with longer phase times. Not playing any right now due to vacation I had to get past, but will be starting up again soon. I just have to watch myself and not sign up for too many games at once.

What are Envoy and Web Dip, WOrld Leaders, PErfect WOrld, and Triple A. I've heard World of Warcraft is terribly addictive. What are all these others? Probably I should never find out, but tell me anyway. Which are the most fun?

WebDip is what you are playing on (WebDiplomacy.net). Evony (not envoy) is a Sid Meier's Civ clone played against a massive number of other players and the game keeps moving evben when you aren't online. sort of a Civ/MMORPG cross. Some call it an MMORTS. Triple A is the online place for Axis & Allies (AaA). World Leaders is another Dip-like site. Perfect World I'm not familiar with.

I was so addicted to civ back in the day. I can't go back. its like reopening a relationship with an ex. Its just too painful and will end in tears.

MOO was another love as well, for those of you not in elementary school at the time.

Heck, anyone rememer VGA planets? Oh god so many hours lovingly wasted on that.

I think that with anything, it's important to remember your priorities. When you're at work, your there to work. If I wasn't off work with a bad back, I wouldn't be in any game shorter than 24 hour turns for that reason.

Basically, Wife and kids, Work, then fun stuff like Dip, Civ, WoW...

This from a guy that stopped using Facebook for a while because it was cutting into my WoW time...
