Log on problems
On my other PC I can log in, but every time I click on a game or one of the links up top it logs me out and says Welcome, Guest. Anyone have an idea how to fix this?

League Links and Progress
Would someone be kind enough to post the links to the league games please? I am interested to see what's going on in other groups.

Have any of the games actually completed yet?

I don't think there are - it requires completion of a game.

No kissing was involved, but Mapleleaf and myself are now enjoying civilised communication. I've apologized for causing the earlier problems.

Austria is doing very well in these games.

Funnily enough in Group F, Mapleleaf and myself got the same countries (England and France) second time round. Has this happened to anyone else?

rait, bersherj and I have had the exact same countries- italy, turkey and austria in BOTH of our games!

this is a proof that country assignment is biased

actually, it proof that is random. :-p

And certainly proof that it is a pain.

In Group D 4 of the six original players are playing the same country. Basically Darwin and I switched theatres and we have a new italy. From the looks of it things are turning out quite alot different though.

I also believe that country assignment is biased.

For my first two games on Phpdip, I got Russia. Won those, so next game it gave me France. Won that, so it then gave me Germany for games 4 & 5. Won those, so then I get Austria for games 6 and 7. Won those; so then games 8,9,10 are Italy twice + Turkey.

Key thing is that I was always aiming at 50pt games - so reference the other players I was getting handicapped higher and higher as my record improved. Had I moved up to a 500 point game and been the junior player, it would have likely given me Russia/France.

It's not a bad idea, but I think that truly random allocation would be better.

It is random.
this is an open source project so anyone can have a look at the algorithm kestas uses. I don't pretend to know about such coding intricacies but i trust people like kestas, wonderlama, figles and others that do.

It is random.
For those being very picky it's not 100% random, but only to the degree that a computer cannot be random. The odds of you getting all 7 nations in 7 consecutive games are far far lower than those of getting them several times

The code below is directly from /gamemaster/adjudicator/pregame.php
If you don't trust me then you can check on the CVS yourself, but this, as well as so many people's statements, should surely convince you?

108 * Make sure everyone gets a random country. Some complain that they get the same
109 * country over and over again, but this function should completely randomize which
110 * country they get. Perhaps it could be made less random, to ensure that players
111 * get variety?
112 */
113 shuffle($countries);

Despite this, people will always manage to find patterns. =)

For the record, I apologized for my part of the nonsense as well. It is behind us. PB is a fine geezer, except for the fact that he insists upon capturing my supply centers.
alamothe (3367 D(B))
17 Oct 08 UTC
it's not patterns, i believe there are certain "blacklists". for example, i never get russia or germany. this makes it non-random for everyone
sceptic_ka (100 D)
18 Oct 08 UTC
Look guys, people suck a getting randomness, our brains have evolved to be super good at finding patterns and noticing correlations. The problem is we find patterns that aren't there: sports players and there lucky charms / the face on mars. We also only remember the positive examples and ignore the negative one, that's how "psychics" convince people they can talk to the dead/predict the future etc or why some doctors think that hospitals are fuller during the full moon.... anyway.
alamothe: either your a little bit unlucky or kestas has two versions of phpdiplomacy, one open source version where we can all see the code and this version here where he has applied a "let's screw with alamothe" patch so that you get your favorite countries less often.
Perhaps he's also changed the code so that when you win you only get 80% of the points, do you always check that you get the right amount of points? :-)
sean (3490 D(B))
18 Oct 08 UTC
alamothe...you really think kestas runs a blacklist of players who don't get certain countries?? Martian Pyramids! thats out there.
sean (3490 D(B))

.......and a kick look at your played games lists shows that you have played both Germany and Russia!

About 25 minutes into the debate McCain (in reference to townhall meetings) said, "The way Barry Goldwater and Jack Kennedy agreed to do before the intervention (touches nose & corrects himself)... the tragedy at Dallas."

To pause or not to pause... that is the question
In one of my games, a user requested to pause the game as he was not able to enter moves. I have chosen to accept, but the thought of not accepting crossed my mind (one reason being that the player is in no way bound by their pledge to start it again at a certain time).

I think, reputation is key since many players end up playing with each again.

Looking at some of the Winner takes all games, it appears that the stated restriction about >100 points to join doesn't apply. Does anyone know why? (Possibly this was in a previous post I missed)

End of Game Statements. Brief explanation?
I read of the existence of EOG statements in some other post, but - not having finished a game yet - I do not exactly know what this means (who does it? What is the typical content of it? Etc...)

Anybody would like to explain? Thanks!

3rd Presidential Debate: Best Moment ?
For me, the best moment was when McCain asked Obama how much his fine on Businesses ('Joe the Plumber') is if they didn't provide healthcare. He really hammered Obama on it. And Obama replied "zero, I provide an exception for small businesses." McCain was just floored, stunned, and looked like a dear in the headlights, a shocked/blank expression for a full minute.
