Log on problems
On my other PC I can log in, but every time I click on a game or one of the links up top it logs me out and says Welcome, Guest. Anyone have an idea how to fix this?

Would someone be kind enough to post the links to the league games please? I am interested to see what's going on in other groups.

Have any of the games actually completed yet?

What McCain said during the last debate...
About 25 minutes into the debate McCain (in reference to townhall meetings) said, "The way Barry Goldwater and Jack Kennedy agreed to do before the intervention (touches nose & corrects himself)... the tragedy at Dallas."

To pause or not to pause... that is the question
In one of my games, a user requested to pause the game as he was not able to enter moves. I have chosen to accept, but the thought of not accepting crossed my mind (one reason being that the player is in no way bound by their pledge to start it again at a certain time).

Some play once told me that the spirit of the game was to back stab people. Thoughts?
I think, reputation is key since many players end up playing with each again.

Firefox keeps crashing on this website

My home page was set to Diplomacy. Whenever I open Firefox now, it crashes. I can't change the home page without opening Firefox, so right now, I am unable to use firefox.

figlesquidge (2131 D)
17 Oct 08 UTC
Wow, and by the looks of things you've had that installation for under 3 weeks. What are those extensions you've got? And do you know which mode of gamelistings.php that is for?
Could it be a memory overload?
(Sorry for the number of posts)

That's weird, I'm running the same version as you but not getting any crashes.
It must be to do with the Plura thing I'm trialing as a lower-revenue-but-less-annoying alternative to adds; it loads a little Java applet in an iframe at the bottom of the page and works on distributed processing tasks, then sends the results back and I get a tiny fraction of a cent which may or may not add up and give me an incentive to work on some of the more mundane code which has to be done. (The calculated theoretical maximum is worthwhile, but it may not work as well in practice)

I'm just trialing it, but I'd like to run it for at least a couple of days to see if it's worth pursuing.. Do you have Java installed? Is anyone else experiencing this?
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))

Regarding changing your homepage; create a new text document, rename it asdf.html, right click it and open it with firefox, that should load you into Firefox without taking you to your home page

"adds"->"advertisements"
Treefarn (6094 D)
17 Oct 08 UTC
That doesn't work either Kestas. When you reopen it, even when trying to open asdf.html, it tries to restore the last session, which includes the Diplomacy site.... and crashes again.

Do you have the Firebug extension? I've noticed that it will frequently crash the browser on sites that use Javascript. If you do, disable it and restart your browser.

I have 3.03, no issues, but I also have effectively no add-ons
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))

That's weird, there should be an option to not restore the last session on startup

Could you delete the current page for phpdiplomacy
then use Google or whatever to go to the page and put the new site as the memory page?

As to Add-ons, I can't remove them if I can't open Firefox, can I?
Katsarephat (100 D)

Hunt down a chrome folder. All sorts of stuff goes in there... you might be able to remove add-ons that way? I can't remember, though.

Why not just remove the LAN/modem connection before starting up the browser
thewonderllama (100 D)
17 Oct 08 UTC
This is in Windows, I presume? If in Vista, launch notepad as Admin, or in XP make sure you're using an admin account, and edit the file C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts. You'll see a line that says something of the form:
127.0.0.1 localhost
Add a space and www.phpdiplomacy.net to the end of that line, save the file, and then restart Firefox. That will redirect the URL to your local machine. When Firefox loads it'll show a page not found. You should then be able to change your default home page. Once you've resolved the issue, remove that part from the hosts file.
Treefarn (6094 D)
17 Oct 08 UTC
Ah, there's an interesting idea Kestas
Treefarn (6094 D)
17 Oct 08 UTC
Wonderllama, that worked. The only Add-ons I have are All-In-One Gestures, which I've had for months now, and the .net Framework Assistant.

Could either of those be causing the issue? Doesn't seem like it.

Here's the version of Firefox I am using...
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.0.3) Gecko/2008092417 Firefox/3.0.3 (.NET CLR 3.5.30729) Creative ZENcast v2.00.07

I already listed the addons.

Me too..in a way. ever since i dl the latest patch- 3.03 (or kestas has the plura thing running- im not sure of the exact timing) my firefox has been `crashing` but in reality it hasnt. just sometimes when i close firefx normally via the top right red cross a little message pops up on my desktop apoligizes for firefox crashing and asks me to send a report to Mozilla.

This plura thing makes the site slower at loading times. I am using firefox 3.03 and I have to wait a little longer to communicate with my fellow players =)
dangermouse (5551 D)

I don't think this is an isolated problem. Beginning about 4 hours ago, Firefox started crashing every time I opened phpdiplomacy.net. I haven't made any changes to my browser settings or OS (Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 6.0; en-US; rv:1.9.0.3) Gecko/2008092417 Firefox/3.0.3)

Occasionally the site will stay open long enough for me to click 1 link, but it invariably freezes almost immediately.

Logging in through IE now and it seems to be working fine.
Treefarn (6094 D)

LOL. Thanks Dangermouse for confirming its not just me.
Chrispminis (916 D)

Hmm... I'm running 3.0.3 and it's working fine for me.
I'm also using Firefox and have had this problem recently. However, it took long enough to load all the content on the site a while ago for me to press "Stop" before Firefox stopped responding. Ever since that, it's taken the browser enough time to completely load the php site that I can click "Stop" before the browser crashes. Also, I don't think it's version sensitive, because I have version 2.0.0.17.
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
17 Oct 08 UTC
Okay I've removed it, let me know if the crashing continues
figlesquidge (2131 D)
17 Oct 08 UTC
Ah, thanks for that information Kestas.
I had noticed Java starting up and running away on the computer (particularly noticeable in CPU usage on one of them), but hadn't realized where was loading it!

Thanks Kestas, all better. If you need someone to be the guinea pig as you work with Plura to fix it, you have my email address.

End of Game Statements. Brief explanation?
I read of the existence of EOG statements in some other post, but - not having finished a game yet - I do not exactly know what this means (who does it? What is the typical content of it? Etc...)

Anybody would like to explain? Thanks!

3rd Presidential Debate: Best Moment ?
For me, the best moment was when McCain asked Obama how much his fine on Businesses ('Joe the Plumber') is if they didn't provide healthcare. He really hammered Obama on it. And Obama replied "zero, I provide an exception for small businesses." McCain was just floored, stunned, and looked like a dear in the headlights, a shocked/blank expression for a full minute.
