Social Classes
Are social classes good? And I don't this turning to political discussion, I just want to know whether a concentration of wealth in a select few is good for society as a whole. Have we simply never seen social classes in an unabused system?

Thoughts on Modern Diplomacy II?
Hello, I'm returning to WebDipWorld after an absence of several years. I am interested to know what the community thinks of this Modern Dip II variant. Is it enjoyable? Fairly balanced? (I don't expect perfection from a variant . . . )

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

Diplomacy (Game) Theory
Question about signaling in the comments.
Puddle (428 D)
07 Apr 15 UTC
So in thinking about intention signaling, if someone's arrow has gone green do see that as them signaling they're done deliberating? As in if you were negotiating potential moves or debating the moves of another player, would you see their arrow being green as then having decided their own moves, and any further equivocation by them is simply misdirection?
2ndWhiteLine (2736 D(B))

It doesn't indicate anything because orders can be changed at any time regardless of whether or not the player has readied.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

But it does indicate to me that game is really no on the players mind, nor are they worried if the game processes without them looking st their orders again.
jbalcorn (429 D)
07 Apr 15 UTC
But it's about the intention. If you signal ready, you have given up control of when the turn will end. So I'd say going green is a signal of some sort...but you have to read it right. It could be "I'm done talking" but it could also be "I am content with my strategy, so if you want something you better be ready to give something"
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))

I agree with the sentiment.

Readying-up is a pretty strong indication that said player is done negotiating.

I also agree with those that stated that it is NOT an indication as to who that player is working with. It could be that their orders are as you discussed, or it could be that they are based on someone else's negotiations with them.

Now, there are cautions to be had. If a player readies orders before I have the chance to talk to them, then I can say that we won't be allies. I've seen many players ready-up in S01 which tells me that they have a standard opening and standard ally they go with regardless of what I might have to say in the matter.

Pretty poor showing early on.

Not much time, but I disagree

I constantly ready games simply because I hate the stupid banners at the top of the page. I'm on and available so much that I can respond and change orders constantly, and make sure to check in close to deadlines too.

I agree with the posts so far and I'm in the camp of ready signifies the set of orders are unlikely to be changed. I have run into people like Valis who ready to remove the banner and it has caused me to target them as someone not open for complex planning. I'm not saying either interpretation is incorrect, but people should be aware of how the green check can be read by other players.

just so zultar doesn't come after me the same way he did with sh@dow, I currently have saved but not ready orders in two public games, so obviously you can't tell who I am by who is ready-ied or not.

Valis2501 (2850 D(G))

yes you could tell who I was but not because whether I was ready or not I hope. Probably because I (can?) do very little to hide my speech and type and thought patterns...

yes, Valis, but this has happened well before this and even in casual games.

Its an interesting discussion. I've never discriminated between green and grey, but I have used, both sending and inferering, no moves entered as a hard promise to check in at least one more time before the deadline. Of course it risks the NMR if played too fast and furious and close but it's often a risk I'm willing to take.

The Religious State
Having seen many opinions on this forum, I am wondering about the acceptability of a religious state. Should a state be able to be primarily Muslim, Jewish, or Christian (etc.)? Is this acceptable in the modern world? If so, how far can this theocracy of sorts go? May they make laws based upon the respective religion? How far reaching should these laws be?

Please discuss, and remain amicable.
