Mandatory Voting: Dicsuss
Is mandatory voting, as seen in Australia, good for a democratic society or counter-intuitive to the base beliefs of democracy? Discuss.

Gunfighter06: No write in. But we are free to turn in a ballot that says nothing. Also in many of our State elections we have Optional Preferential Voting for the Upper House, so we can number candidates in order of our preference until we get to some candidates we think are Ll equally bad. Our Next Federal election is likely to use that also (currently it requires full preferential).

But standing for election in either the Upper or Lower House is not actually difficult - you do not need to even have a political party to stand. So there's no need for write in - anyone who actually wants to be elected can get themselves on the ballot.

Out of interest, when was the last time someone was actually elected via the write in box?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Write-in_candidate

Actually, write-in candidates have won election to national office on numerous occasions in the United States. It's rare, but it does happen. Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) won as write-in as recently as 2010. Rep. Dave Lobesack (D-IA) also won his party's nomination as write-in candidate in 2006. Senator Strom Thurmond (D-SC) won as a write-in candidate back in 1954.

I support the write-in option as a valuable auxiliary tool in the toolbox of democracy.

A few years back (5-10) someone got into the runoff for a San Francisco city council election as a write-in. Also, a pedophile judge in Orange County (California) was replaced by a write-in candidate during the same time frame. It's not a common occurrence, but it used to happen before write-ins were banned here in California. I'm sure it happens elsewhere as well.

To add fuel to the conversation: Are youth (16-25) more or less educated about politics than they were in the early 90's? Why?
thorfi (1023 D)

I would guess more - at least in Australia The Greens party (environmentalist, people focused) is picking up a lot of the youth via social media and direct grassroots campaigns, which were awfully hard to run in the '90s. Even our two majors are doing quite a lot via social media to get their political messages out.

There is a lot of ignorance/ don't care too - but that's been like that forever. :-)

@CommanderByron NPR recently did some stories on that and found that . . . it's about the same as it's always been. 18-30 (The age range they looked at) had less overall knowledge than older groups, but had significantly more knowledge on specific issues such as minimum wage laws, climate change, LGBT rights, etc.

Here's a statement to discuss:
Environmentalism benefits more than any other political alignment from social media.
Octavious (2802 D)
10 Apr 15 UTC
Environmentalism is a political alignment?
Puddle (413 D)
10 Apr 15 UTC
It is in the U.S.
Octavious (2802 D)
10 Apr 15 UTC
Is it aligned in any particular direction?

In the UK we have the Green Party, but they are really the Socialist Party with a gimmick rather than a party of environmentalists. Environmentalists tend to be found in all parties but without much in the way of influence.
Jeff Kuta (2066 D)

Not sure what Puddle means at all.

Left leaning political parties usually have some kind of environmentally conscious party plank. I've been a California Green for about 15 years myself. Older Greens have leftist tendencies, but younger Greens are more about microcommunities and bottom up lifestyle changes. That's a great trend which I hope continues.

"Socialist Party with a gimmick rather than a party of environmentalists" Well that is a very novel description! And not at all acurate Octavious. Whilst some of the Greens policies can be called socialist many of them cannot. As for the suggestion that they are not a party of environmentalists, I would love to hear your justification for such a claim.

Social Classes
Are social classes good? And I don't this turning to political discussion, I just want to know whether a concentration of wealth in a select few is good for society as a whole. Have we simply never seen social classes in an unabused system?

Thoughts on Modern Diplomacy II?
Hello, I'm returning to WebDipWorld after an absence of several years. I am interested to know what the community thinks of this Modern Dip II variant. Is it enjoyable? Fairly balanced? (I don't expect perfection from a variant . . . )

Thanks in advance for your thoughts!
