The Tarvu thread!
Hey everyone. FlemGem and four other users have encouraged me to start a thread for readings from the Tarvunty. I'm going to expand that to include a couple of Tarvunty readings per week, plus a daily post with inspiring stories from the lives of the great proffets, and other Tarvuist goodies!

We apparently have endless possibilities for planets to appear, in completely different climates and such... Does that mean endless possibilities for, for example, life, out there in the universe? So everything that is chemically and physically possible almost certainly happens somewhere right?

Hey guys, I'm not kidding
I need subs for the Masters. So far, all subs have been top 100 GR, and I'd like to keep it that way if possible (but please if you're interested don't let GR stop you from telling me). I need two more at least.

An Unexpected Hanging
Some of you may be familiar with this puzzle/paradox, but please don't google it if you're not, and don't bring in outside sources till at least post 100; just post your OWN thoughts.

This has been a much-discussed paradox. Resolve it.

@Mapu, the hunger games wishes it was 1/10 as good as Olson Scott Card's book.

Ender *way* predates Hunger Games.

The Hunger Games are in the same category as Ender's Game in the sense that they are both fictional or sci-fi series, but so is an average joe on this site compared to MM.
They both may play the same game called Diplomacy, but there are stark differences between them.

The Hunger Games is passable fictional writing. Ender's Game is one of the best sci-fi books ever written.

Spoiler Alrt about the book:

My big concern is it seems lile they are playing it such that Ender knows he is fighting. the Formics and not playing a game which destroys the whole premise.

Orson*, and some of us prefer to further appreciate the book by pretending that its author doesn't exist.
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))

@Draug: From what I am reading, the movie encapsulates the first 2 books, meaning that "twist" could be unveiled even in the first half of the film.
semck83 (229 D(B))
08 May 13 UTC
Well, that would really suck, Tom.

But Draug, Ender always knew he was preparing to fight Formics.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
08 May 13 UTC
I was too annoyed with the hunger games comparison to type correctly ghug.

@Draug, agreed, I'm hoping this is not a movie that deviates much from the book. There is no need to change the story line at all. Hopefully it's what Tom mentioned
Draugnar (0 DX)

But Ender actually states "I will win this war for you" and it is presented as if he is saying it to the Colonel. And they would be better off combining EG with the first two Bean novels. Speaker is way to disconnected from EG as he is an adult in it. Heck, combining it with Ender in Exile would be better as at least tyat follows right behind in the Enderverse chronology.

And yes, I have read all the books (well, except Shadows in Flight but will get to it on my upcoming vacation).

So I now have 5 movies to watch this year: EG, Iron Man 3, Star Trek: Into Darkness, The Hobbit part 2, and Man of Steel.
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))
08 May 13 UTC
That is a good looking list Draug. I thought Iron Man 3 was a bit underwhelming, but still probably worth the price of admission.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
08 May 13 UTC
I have very high expectations for the Man of Steel, really looking forward to that.
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))
08 May 13 UTC
They just released a pretty big preview of the Hans Zimmer score for Man of Steel today.
Agree with Draug above. Destroying the premise of Ender "just" going through training seems to make it little more than a sci-fi flick. I certainly hope they won't...

On the fun side, I also need to catch Monsters University (sequel to Monsters, Inc.)
Jon65 (112 D)

That line of "I will win this war for you!" doesn't mean he knows he's actually been fighting them for real. It could be one of those "I'm ready to go out there and kick some alien behind and will win this war for you."
Draugnar (0 DX)
08 May 13 UTC
Trailers do that all the time, make comments look like somethig they aren't. So we will see. It's just a concern that they *might* go that way and destroy the whole premise of the book (and his motivation in Speaker, Xenocide, and Children of the Mind).
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
08 May 13 UTC
Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead were actually published together as Ender's War, so I don't find it odd they'd combine the two into a movie.
Draugnar (0 DX)
08 May 13 UTC
Not originally they weren't. That was only some stupid book club edition. The novels take place decades apart in Ender's life and centuries (millenia) apart in universe time. It was stupid to combine them together. It would be like combinging the Hobbit with Fellowship of the Ring because both had the One Ring and Bilbo Baggins. If you were going to combine books, Speaker, Xenocide, and Children of the Mind would be the ones to combine (like Fellowship, Two Towers, and Return of the King).
Draugnar (0 DX)
08 May 13 UTC
Now a blending of Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow would be cool too. Considering both tell much of the same story from different points of view. The problem there would be all the lead up in Ender's Shadow is about Bean's life on Earth and has nothing at all to do with Ender.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
08 May 13 UTC
Yes, of course not originally, that would make no sense.
MKECharlie (2074 D(G))

I read an interview with Card about the movie, and he said that the plot device that isn't revealed until the end of the book is not made a secret at all in the movie.

"The first decision I made was not to pursue the Peter/Valentine subplot with the Internet, because that's just watching people type things into the computer. The second decision I made was to give that information about the surprise at the end from the start."

Found it: http://www.hatrack.com/research/interviews/1998-scott-nicholson.shtml
Well, if it's Card's script then there is yet hope.
dipplayer2004 (1310 D)
09 May 13 UTC
That seems like it would change the whole story. The impact of the shock that we and Ender feel would be lost.
Draugnar (0 DX)

I can handle us knowing but if Ender knows, it isn't a game anymore so the name no longer makes sense.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
09 May 13 UTC
I've enjoyed the book many times and enjoyed it just fine without being surprised at the end. So for us to know is not a problem. But for Ender to know would be a different story.

A cheap, reliable game
I've had a few too many games ruined by cheaters and CDs. I've created a anonymous game with a 25-point buy in that is pass-worded. If you're interested in playing, please reply and I'll PM you a password. I'd prefer it if you've completed (at least) 5 games, but I'll send the password to anyone who's not brand-new and has never "left" a game.
