The Tarvu thread!
Hey everyone. FlemGem and four other users have encouraged me to start a thread for readings from the Tarvunty. I'm going to expand that to include a couple of Tarvunty readings per week, plus a daily post with inspiring stories from the lives of the great proffets, and other Tarvuist goodies!

We apparently have endless possibilities for planets to appear, in completely different climates and such... Does that mean endless possibilities for, for example, life, out there in the universe? So everything that is chemically and physically possible almost certainly happens somewhere right?

Hey guys, I'm not kidding
I need subs for the Masters. So far, all subs have been top 100 GR, and I'd like to keep it that way if possible (but please if you're interested don't let GR stop you from telling me). I need two more at least.

An Unexpected Hanging
Some of you may be familiar with this puzzle/paradox, but please don't google it if you're not, and don't bring in outside sources till at least post 100; just post your OWN thoughts.

This has been a much-discussed paradox. Resolve it.

I've done this activity with students before as well as doing it myself back in college, but I"d like to see how you all would respond. The task is as follows: you're given a list of nine people who are sick with an unspecified disease. You only have enough vaccine for a certain number of people. Your job is to "rank" these individuals in the order of which you'd give them the vaccine. #1 will survive, #9 will die, with decreasing likelihood of survival as the list goes down.

Mrs. A is a 38 year old mother of seven living in rural West Virginia. Life has been hard for Mrs. A since her husband, a coal miner, died of lung disease five years ago, and she has been forced to live on welfare and Social Security benefits to care for the children, whose ages lie between 14 and 2. Mrs. A is perpetually ill with a congenital heart disease and a large portion of her income goes to her medical care.

Mr. B graduated Summa Cum Laude from Yale University with a degree in Chemical Engineering in 2008 and currently works as a nuclear engineer at Yucca Mountain in Arizona. Mr. B was the top chemistry graduate in his class, received top marks in his courses, and was actively involved in the community. He hopes to someday develop alternative energy sources for the developing world.

Miss C is a 16 month old infant, born into a stable, suburban community to two loving parents. Her community does not have the best school system due to low property values, but her parents want nothing but the best for their daughter. Her mother is a nurse at a local hospital, and her father is a history teacher at the high school.

Mr. D is seventy-nine years old and has been retired for forty years, having made his first million at age 24 after helping to invent the compact disc. Mr. D never married and has no immediate family. If chosen to receive the cure, he pledges to donate $500 million to a local children's hospital which would otherwise have been donated to the Boston Red Sox.

Mrs. E is an apathetic 13 year old girl who, despite being exceptionally bright and intelligent, shows no interest in school. She is the daughter of two alcoholic parents, and already has shown signs of future criminal behavior. Although she is contemplating dropping out of school, she shows an active interest in politics and is a tremendous public speaker.

Mr. F was recently paroled from a supermax prison in Colorado for stealing millions of dollars from the Department of Defense using a self-written computer program. Before serving a ten year sentence, he worked as a defense consultant protecting the nations computer infrastructure from foreign attack. Mr. F has been declared rehabilitated by the state of Colorado.

Miss G is a 28 year old kindergarten teacher who lives with her partner, Karen, in Sacramento, California. She loves kids, and hopes to adopt a baby in the next few years, even if she is not allowed to legally marry her partner. Miss G wants to adopt because she was born with a genetic condition rendering her unable to have children, and she is actively involved in the local church.

Mr. H is a former US Congressman and Speaker of the House from Massachusetts, who recently retired from politics at 84 to travel the country in his RV. He was a very popular Representative and served ten consecutive terms. While in office, he supported laws to ban stem cell research, stop illegal immigration, and voted to invade both Iraq and Afghanistan.

Mr. I is a 30 year old small time drug dealer in New York City who has served several short stints in jail for possession charges. Unable to find a real job, he turned to selling drugs to support his elderly mother and autistic son. Mr. I does not use drugs, and would rather not sell them for a living, but sees no alternative due to a poor job market and a lack of tangible skills.

I would form task force to design an application process and an autonomous blue-ribbon commission to create an evaluation matrix, with an independent ad-hoc coordinating committee to facilitate inter-organizational collaboration. Naturally, you'd need an umbrella supervising board to oversee their work and make recommendations to the citizen review panel.

We would all be dead before the nominating subcommittee convened.

8 balls in a bingo machine lettered A-E plus G-I. Fuck F. Sorry, but "rehabilitated" felons are still felons and are second class citizens in my book.
I asked several of my friends this as well. The ones who didn't laugh at me for acting like a middle schooler on MySpace answered

b c d f e a I h g
d b c e f h a I g

Needless to say most didn't answer and derailed the thread quicker than you guys could.

Why the fuck would they ant the kindergarten teacher to die? Do they not like her cause she is a lesbian?
2ndWhiteLine (2611 D(B))

I always thought of F as having useful skills, felon or not. I've found that girls always choose the infant as their top choice and everyone chose the Yalie in their top three. Nobody ever puts the rich guy even in the top half, so that surprises me.
Draugnar (0 DX)

Oh, and in my answer, I didn't remove I because he is a victim of circumstance and wants out. F commited the felony willingly and willfully. I feels he has no choice.
Draugnar (0 DX)
09 May 13 UTC
I don't trust willful felons to ever have truly reformed. A drug dealer by necessity (like a theif stealing food to care for others) is different from one who just stole shit loads that wasn't his out of greed. There are plenty of skilled IT people in the world. We won't miss one more of us. Seeing as I'm one of them, I'm not viewing a whole profession in a "anyone can do it" light, but merely recognizing that we are not so rare as to be irreplacable.

I do find it funny that *Mrs.* E is only 13. Awfully young to be married nowadays.
Draugnar (0 DX)

Realistically, the first thing should be done is present it to the room of 9 people and ask if anyone wishes to be excluded from the short list in favor of someone else. There are sure to be some civic minded individuals (like the former Senator of 80 odd years) who willgive up their spot and willingly goe into a secondary consideration after the others have been chosen.

That's a good point Draug, but I would imagine that the Senator, who is selfish enough to hold a major donation hostage over the vaccine, wouldn't be the first to volunteer.
Draugnar (0 DX)
09 May 13 UTC
@SWL - It wasn't the Senator (actually, Speaker of the House) who held the donation hostage. Read again.

"Mr. H is a former US Congressman and Speaker of the House from Massachusetts, who recently retired from politics at 84 to travel the country in his RV. He was a very popular Representative and served ten consecutive terms. While in office, he supported laws to ban stem cell research, stop illegal immigration, and voted to invade both Iraq and Afghanistan"

You are thinking of the coinventor of the CD/uberbillionaire.

A cheap, reliable game
I've had a few too many games ruined by cheaters and CDs. I've created a anonymous game with a 25-point buy in that is pass-worded. If you're interested in playing, please reply and I'll PM you a password. I'd prefer it if you've completed (at least) 5 games, but I'll send the password to anyone who's not brand-new and has never "left" a game.
