Going for all points or playing nice
When you are about to solo, do you typically try to rack up as many points as you can in the last turn, or be nice to your allies and get just enough SCs to solo?

Please do not turn this into a gun control thread, we have other threads for that. This thread only uses gun control as an example.

Impact of pornography on children: discuss
There have been a couple big articles in the Telegraph on this lately.

X3non,

Indeed; well, I hope I have been clear in stating my belief that this has happened before -- widely in some times, some in all times. That said, I also believe it is increasing locally in time right now. (The belief that it is constant in frequency across all times and cultures seems just as silly to me as the belief that it didn't used to happen at all). I do grant that I think the suggestion that it is tied to pornography is weak; I titled the thread after the article. I also think that rape, per se, is only a part of the story. There appears to be an increase in even consenual sex at younger ages.

Although it can't be denied that, as I said in OP, this article and others like it tend to be pretty anecdotal, and it may be a storm in a teacup. The latter would seem to be suggested, for example, by this poll:

"This is also a feminist issue (surprise surprise, haters), because girls hopefully would live in a culture where they feel comfortable turning down the pressures of horny boys..."

And....girls are never horny and have no hormones raging through them? I truly pity you Thucy, and those that think like you, who believe that all boys are wicked to the core, and all girls are perfect and constantly victimized by males throughout their lives. Don't you realize that your very own attitudes (all or nothing) are as perverted and skewed as you claim everyone else to have?

NOT all girls are nice and good. Girls in school are just as horny as boys, and act out upon such behavior -- generally (if they are smart) being able to manipulate boys to do their bidding. Girls take pictures of *themselves* to pass around.

You really need to put down the feminsist rags you read and start taking a little more sensible approach to reality. there are good and bad in BOTH sexes, my friend. There are advantages and disadvantages to being either sex, or sexual persuasion, for that matter.

"Must be 18 or older, if so click accept" or "enter your birthdate" are not good deterrants
While I agree with everything you say Krellin, I think the topic at hand was sexual aggression, which in my sensible reality is still skewed for the sexes: boys being main offenders.

which ted talk? the one about watching porn? maybe, i've seen it anyway.

whether or not porn contributes to rape culture or is one of its symptoms is an open question, if you ask me. either way, the broader problem is rape culture.

"I truly pity you Thucy, and those that think like you, who believe that all boys are wicked to the core,"

I nearly choked on my coffee. What a moron.

I just came from reddit where I spent about 30 minutes reminding MRAs that they're idiots, so I don't really want to get into it. I mean.... it's krellin after all. I feel I'm not obliged to dignify your ideas with a response.

To the 2 of you who seem to have +1'd him however... I am ashamed.

Krellin apparently denies the existence of rape culture. To that end, I present to you an infographic

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/files/2013/01/rape_infographic.jpg
Though it's hard to disagree to the statement that a rape culture is a bad thing, I wonder what you really mean by that term. Are you saying we have a rape culture? Is it a subculture? Is it growing? What do you mean?
Thucydides (864 D(B))

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rape_culture#Feminist_theory

There's a primer.

But when I use it I basically mean the normalization of rape and related acts in our society (thinking of America but it's not the only place with a rape culture).

It's unfortunately the dominant culture, though there is significant pushback (feminists get credit where credit is due).

Did you hear about the rape case in Steubenville, Ohio? Perfect example of rape culture.

Fair enough. What's the difference between Went to Trial, but not Jailed and Falsely Accused? Were they all found guilty, but not given jail time? Or were they found innocent. If so, how is that different than Falsely Accused?

Did I say that non-feminists are rapists?

I think bo_sox, you may be missing the point of rape culture. The way you phrase it, being "in line" with rape culture, doesn't mean a whole lot.

A culture is a collective and usually unconscious construction. Everyone within a culture shares some responsibility for its content, even those who are vehemently ideologically opposed to the underlying currents of its primary manifestations.

Translation: we have all had a part to play in rape culture, knowingly or not, rapist or not.

Ever make a rape joke? Rape culture. Ever catcall a woman? Rape culture. Ever not call someone out for catcalling a woman? Also rape culture. Ever fail to protest at a rape joke? Also rape culture.

And so on. It's multi-layered. That's why it's a culture and not a law.

It also goes beyond what a lot of people think has to do with rape, like male gaze in movies. Or "creepshots" of reddit fame.

(Fucking reddit Jesus Christ there are so many scumbags on that website)

abge, went to trial, but not jailed means a not-guilty verdict was returned, which could mean there was merely insufficient evidence to convict.

falsely accused means not only did was the burden of proof not met, but it was proven that the accused did not commit the crime (the duke lacrosse case, if I remember correctly, was a good example of this)
Draugnar (0 DX)

Actually not jailed just means the sentence was a suspended one.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
31 Jan 13 UTC
That's what I was wondering. Just because you didn't go to jail doesn't mean you weren't found guilty.
Draugnar (0 DX)

And just because you weren't found guilty doesn't mean you were found innocent (there is no such thing as being found innocent in US Criminal Law).

@SYnapse: daughters are as great as children are :) maybe, u will have difficulties to get them to play diplomacy with you - but this might have by the time (we have rather many girls in our FtF rounds, and they're as cunning as the blokes else).

@Krellin: Just wanted to respond to your statements, but apparently this is superfluous. The foremost thing one needs to keep in mind is that forced sex, aka rape, is rarely if ever about sexual pleasure and rambling hormones, but about feelings of power. which is why castration of serial rapists will not prevent them from doing humiliating harm to women, only that they're impotent. Also, most people that start posting pics of themselves or passing them around (be it girls or boys), actually don't flirt in sensu strictu (than they would probably do so only to their loved one, and him passing them to others is not their passing them around) but rather a wish to be recognised or manipulate people into liking them or whatever. May or may not be the same root as a male rapist, but here is clearly not the horny part at work.
Octavious (2701 D)

@ X3n0n

Surely sexual pleasure must play quite a big part? I'm not sure how it works for you, but if I'm not in the mood it tends not to. Besides which there are plenty of ways of projecting power over someone which don't come with the sort of life destroying consequences that getting caught raping someone would have. I just don't buy it.

I'm not sure how my commenting on a specific comment that I quoted somehow gets translated in to my commenting on the entirety of "rape culture" - whatever the hell "rape culture" is. Frankly, I don't know what it is, other than something that radicals like to dream exists in society in a far greater frequency than reality dictates.

If you want to talk about "rape culture", boys get molested by women and don't report it. Female school teachers have sex with young boys and when it does get reported, it gets under-punished, and generally mocked in the media -- like "what's the matter with THAT kid, *I* would have done her..."

This is not to say that rape is not predominantly a male-on-female thing...but to suggest that all women in society are innocent and pure is stupid and denies reality.

To suggest that any female in school involved in sexual behavior, whether in the actual act, or whether it be passing on photographs of herself, is somehow the fault of male-dominated "rape culture" is just fucking stupid.

Somehow, this site is full of self-flagellating males who think that their own sex has no positive qualities....well, of course, usually the commenter thinks himself (and usually himself alone) is somehow enlightened and everyone else is a troglodyte.

I really think most of you need to go sue your public school systems and demand some of your tax dollars back for how badly they fucked up your view of reality.

Been passing a lot of pictures of yourself around because you want to manipulate people?

No - I think a lot of girls take pictures of themselves and send them to their boyfriends to flirt and then it gets out of hand when they break up, or the boy wants to show off to his friends and the picture goes viral. This **idioitic** notion that it is all done with some malevolent intent, that girls taking photos of themselves in their bedrooms and texting them away is really some grand scheme is the stupidest thing I've read in a long time.

@Oct - You are a normal person. A rapist is not normal. Psychologists interviews and studies of rapists (especially serial rapists) have shown it is not about sexual gratification but power and terrorization.
Octavious (2701 D)
31 Jan 13 UTC
@Draug

That doesn't get round the fact that if there isn't any sexual gratification going on the mechanics of the thing just ain't gonna work
Draugnar (0 DX)
31 Jan 13 UTC
There may be (arguably has to be on some level if it's a man and he has a non-medically induced erection) but that doesn't make it the motivation. You are confusing cause and effect. Motivation is cause, raging hard on is effect.
Draugnar (0 DX)

@Oct - Some of the sickest child rapists use man made instruments and/or fingers to penetrate and harm their victims, not their penises.

Self-flagellating male? Get over your damn self.

Lmao I love being a man. What I don't love is living in a sexist society.

Just google rape culture. I don't need to sit here and repeat reams of evidence and anecdotes about it. If you think it's not real, you need a reality check.

Then again you're krellin... your need of a reality check is nothing new to us here.
