Going for all points or playing nice
When you are about to solo, do you typically try to rack up as many points as you can in the last turn, or be nice to your allies and get just enough SCs to solo?

Why do you say that, Semck? I mean I don't agree with everything in it, but I wouldn't call it *complete* drivel.

I think it's directed at a certain audience, one that already accepts that chivalry is, historically, a reaction of male guilt or whatever, i.e. "We'll take all the power and money and control, but don't worry, we'll take care of you." I think she sees the behavior in class as a sort of continued training in that vein. While I don't agree that it *necessarily* is, I can see why it sets off her red flags.

Take this hypothetical: say some class of people took all your money and control away from you and those like you for all of history, but historically had also given you and yours a steady supply of all the lollipops you could ever want. Now it's a new age, and you are supposed to be able to make decisions for yourself now. You probably wouldn't be too thrilled to see somebody of the "former" control class giving your kid lollipops in school under the guidance of the teacher - under even the most benign of circumstances.

Is that a terrible example? But I think that's how she feels. Chivalry is a form of control in her opinion - or at best, a prelude to it.

Where's celticfox when you need her?

"A true show of respect is paying us equally for the same work, not 77 cents on the dollar, which is the current average. That’s the world I want my son to live in and I seriously doubt it will ever happen as long as women believe men should hold the door open for them."

Great article, I couldnt agree more, although I may not feel it is as much a priority as she does.

To all the people here who say that there is more than mere physiology which seperates us, they said the same thing about race some time ago. Remember the time when people measured the black man's cranium to prove he was different. Those days were fun.

No, they werent. 77 cents on the dollar is a sham. 15% of member of the 112th congress are women. Wake me up when that percentage is 60 before you say feminism has ge too far.
krellin (80 DX)
29 Jan 13 UTC
Why should Congress be made up of 60 % women? 60 percent of that candidates are not women!!! So before you start making asinine statements demanding some false equality, why don't you join REALITY.

Do you know why women, on average, make less money than men? Because, on average, they have less of a work history, and that work history is often times interrupted for extended periods of time while they get pregnant, have children and raise them, which is a choice they make -- AND WHICH IS NOBLE AND GOOD in purpose.

Women that have exactly the same experience as men ought to make the same amount as a man - no doubt - but these figures that fly about regarding inequality of pay are often *fatally* flawed if anyone cares to dive in to the *real* educational and work experience background of the comparisons.

My kids are in 8th and 9th grade - in their educational experience so far they collectively have had 7 teachers leave their jobs mid-way through the year to have children, disrupting their education and often times being replaced by and inferior, if not inadequate substitutes to fill out the year. So out of the 52 teachers they have had collectively, 13.5% of them (all women) quit their jobs mid-project. Remove the men from that number (none of whom have quit), and the percentage of women that quit their jobs suddenly goes up.

Now, I don't have a problem with a women quitting her job to raise a child. I think it is a wonderful choice to make -- but if you are trying to run a business, it hurts both the productivity and the bottom line when you have to suddenly lose and employee and retrain a new one. Essentially, women - collectively - are more expensive employees than men.
StackelbergFollower (1463 D(G))

krellin, those trends aren't independent.

Why do women often leave their job to raise their kids? Because, quite often, they make less than their husband, so it makes more sense for the husband to keep working.

But why do women make less than their husband? Because they leave their job to raise kids... see the problem?

I love the 77 cents on the dollar stat getting thrown around. People that mention that rarely mention how many more women go to college than men and that the number seems to be increasing, or the recent data that shows that women under 30 in urban areas make more than men of the same age bracket. Or if they do mention it those revelations always come with the attitude that it is a good thing. We also don't hear as much about women getting lighter prison sentences than men for committing the same crimes, women being almost immune to prosecution for domestic violence, the gap in boys being diagnosed ADD or ADHD versus girls, or other such issues where the patriarchy favors women. I applaud the author of the blog trying to breakdown gendered gentlemanly behavior because that sense of entitlement leads to all sorts of problems on both sides down the line.

And why is gentlemanly behavior so important to some of you yet you will rip each other to shreds over someone disagreeing with you on it? How in the blue bloody hell is that in anyway gentlemanly?

@ Krellin, it is true that maternity leave can be an issue for businesses, perhaps if our society valued the parenting contributions of fathers we would have that "problem" on both sides and businesses would be used to both parents taking leave and be able to adjust accordingly. Additionally on the argument of women are more expensive employees, men die sooner so businesses lose valuable employees that way. Maybe companies should stop hiring old dudes?

And Draugnar nice bringing the Gen X bashing into the mix with your "boomer's kids" quip. No we are not as self deprecatingly polite as Gen Y or as the Boomers. Of course the Boomers did more to trash the world politically, economically, and culturally than they ever did to try and make it better. Hell if it was not for things like the Civil Rights Movement Boomers would be nigh onto goddamn worthless. Your problem with Gen X is that we largely prefer not to kiss ass, especially to people like you that are just as rude as you claim us to be. And how in the fuck we got on generational rants from boys having to pee second at a daycare is beyond me, but then so is much of your "logic." And considering your pattern of speech/typing and your wife's mother's age I going to go with "privileged unknown race 60 something asshole." For someone in theory standing up for civility and not prejudging people you sure are an age bigot aren't you?

Of course your use of language, turns of phrase, and expectations speak to more than that. You appear to have a paternalist streak a mile or twelve wide when you expect deference to you, in part because of your age and station, and to "your women" as well. If someone does not show you that deference they are bad, uncouth, ill mannered, and thereby not a gentleman. Essentially because someone does not give you and yours proper sway and swath you take away their gentleman status, which is the first step towards emasculating someone, gendering them female, and ultimately them needing the warm paternalist protection that your false manners provide, all the while you talk trash about an entire generation of people that have been holding up the world economy while your people looted it. You can take your chivalry, your gentlemanly BS, your paternalism, and your hubris and ever so politely, graciously, and with all due deference to whomever you must show respect to in your anachronistic honor code and shove it so far up your own ass that you taste it. Because your form of manners is just another form of control that people like you try to impose on the masses.

And if the mods want to put me in a time out, feel free. Nothing I have said is worse than Draugnar trying to slip by another Boomer assault on my generation. Fuck him and all who think like him. To quote Billy Idol's band Generation X "Cause what you give it is what you get.....Your Generation don't mean a thing to me." Not only is the haughty, high minded, and morally bankrupt ignorance that comes from his mouth offensive but it is also the same shit that sets feminists off and makes men's rights activists that are not sexist look like shitheads. Because at the end of the day in his warped reality women must have doors held for them as they are incapable of it and all men below his station must show him deference. But because he is a man, an old man that expects the world to bend to his whim because of when he was born, he infantilizes everyone and turns them into good child that stays quiet at the table, bad child that dares to act outside his norms, or woman that is frail and must be coddled.
I wish I just posted tl;dr as was my first gut instinct. Alas.

female bladders are slightly smaller than men's, hence it's perfectly normal for a gentlemen to at least hesitate when going to a bathroom and giving the woman a chance to go first (without forcing her to accept said choice).

The article can thus be safely ignored, so can this thread.

"People that mention that rarely mention how many more women go to college than men...

The mere act of going to college does NOT automatically justify a higher wage. WHAT DEGREE you obtain while in college *may* justify a higher degree. How many women are opting to take "hard" sciences, such as engineering or bio-chemistry - things that actually pay well, or get advanced business degrees, versus near-worthless liberal arts degrees that don't serve the business community well.

"Why do women often leave their job to raise their kids?" BECUASE WOMEN HAVE THE BREASTS TO FEED THEM for starters...Hate to tell you this, but women are designed by nature to care for children. You morons can spend all the time inthe world making your pretty little feel-good arguments that men can stay home and do just as good a job of raising children, and to some extent you are right...but if you unstick your heads from your asses, if you have any **real** experience raising children and being around men and women raising children, you will realize that women, *generally* speaking, are better equipped physically *(breasts milk)* and emotionally to raise children. To suggest otherwise is simply to state that you have zero experience in the act of child-rearing.

Again, I will state *very clearly* that women with equal experience deserve equal pay. I *also* know men that have done the stay-at-home thing, and when THEY go back to work, they will start at the bottom of the wage scale, as they should. Just like any man changing careers will get reset -- I see it all the time in my position.

So, once again, all this bashing of men for making too much, and ohhhhh, poor women, etc blah blah blah is primarily based on biased, skewed misinformation.

How about the flip side -- any man that actually does stay home to raise children will be widely ridiculed by people for being less than a man, and when he does return to work, he will most likely be MORE penalized for his gap in work history because "men don't do that". These games play both ways.
Gunfighter06 (224 D)
