@Bb82 - I really don't think the forum is representative of the community. I'm approaching 30 games played and I don't think I've played with most players who post on the forum. And if you look at hellalt's dissertation on this website that he posted a week or so ago, this site is growing, not shrinking.

Also bb82, we are not all alike - i have played 140+ games, made 1000+ replies to threads on the forum, and I don't think i have sworn once.

Judging an entire community based on a few people is bound to give you a wrong impression of the overall population.

As for why there is no censorship, I believe there are two main reasons. First is that it would be a lot of work and no one is being paid to run this place.

Second is the belief that in diplomacy it is up to people to make their own reputations, both in each game and on the website in general, and then to live with the consequences.

The thing to remember is that when someone is an asshole towards you, that reflects on them, not you. If you take it personally and don't shrug it off, then how are you going to handle it in a game of this nature?

Kestas!! He is the creator here.. I just read some spam he posted at another site awhile ago. Does this explain all the filth in the forums here? He leads and a select few blindly follow with the cop-out of 'freedom of speech'?

He showed zero class by targeting another creator's site. Btw, that 'child' site far exceeds this 'parent' site.

Granted, his open-source code is inspirational and cherished by many. But it is free open code, available to all.

bb82: I was going to ask you what site you were coming from, but I guess you just told us. Make sure you know the history of PLAYDiplomacy before judging Kestas. Comments like the one you made now aren't going to win you many friends here.

And just a quick scroll down the Forum should make it obvious that this is a decent community, despite those few who like to insult people without much basis. Questions usually get prompt and respectful answers (despite your recent experience), political threads get extremely sophisticated, there are a couple mildly witty game threads that will never die and tournament threads show an obvious high level of dedication and planning in them.

I would also quickly note that the mods really care about their roles here and their recurrent posts in the forums make them so visible that their names are easily recognizable to any player that has glanced over the forums a few times. And I have to say Kestas alone has devoted an amazing amount of time to improving this site, especially, for instance, around last Fall when dramatic changes were rapidly being made in quick succession.

How do you know "other site" is better than this one if you didn't played even one game? Both of them are quality sites and personally I like this one better, but that doesn't mean I will go on "other" and start criticizing it .

When you describe kestas as "targeting another site", you should really mention the whole plagiarism issue that he was attacking them for.

So the real question is, troll or sockpuppet.

A 'sockpuppet', for those unfamiliar with the term, is a fake account that someone makes to pretend to be a disinterested third party who writes supportive stuff about them.

Saying that site plagiarized is like saying a son being born is plagiarizing his father. There are some resemblances, that's all.

That whole issue is still displayed at that site for anyone curious enough to read. Kestas's craziness over there parallels my issue with this forum, hence my core problem with this site.

I see no legitimate reason why a couple mods can't be found to ban IPs that are more than inappropriate. Allowing that filth along with an almost gambling atmosphere will mainly just entice the type to frequent skanky brothels.

In any case, the appropriate thing to do is just ignore him, and let him go away. Whether he is a troll or a sockpuppet, he has nothing to contribute, so there is no point in engaging in debate. Debate, after all, implies a willingness to consider contrary views, and that's simply not the goal of a troll or sockpuppet.
