Apologies for loserish posting from my account, it was not me. And this is not either.

Curse of Monkey Island - good call Skitch. But for me the one that stands out is the arcade version of Star Wars - that just blew my head off.

Total War has been my series of choice, though I have been disappointed with the rate of improvement in the last games.

Best Strategy Game on computer: Civilization II and Age of Empires II
Best First-Person Shooter: Halo and Goldeneye
Best Sports Game: Ken Griffey Jr.'s Winning Run, Madden whatever year, FIFA whatever year and NBA Jam.
Best RPG: Final Fantasy whatever, Golden Sun series
Best Adventure: The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time and Super Mario Bros 3
Best Fighting: Mortal Kombat II, Street Fighter II Turbo, Soul Calibur II (I wonder why the second is always the best)
Best Racing: Gran Turismo, Top Gear 2.

Final Fantasy whatever?!? Shocking! FFVII leads the rest by quite a margin and is the best game ever made. Civ II would be close if it wasn't for the fact that you could kill pretty much everyone in a single turn with the aid of a few diplomats smuggling nukes.

Barn3tt, I just picked up Napoleon: Total War. I've played it a few times already and I like it, but I suck at it. I can barely win battles on easy.

Got any battle tips to share?

lol and actually almost forgot some of the greatest games of all time. All from Atari: River Raid one and two, Frostbite, Frogger, Breakout and Enduro.

Also Fallout 3, GTA IV, Dues Ex (I like me some good stories and characters), and for the old school Donkey Kong Country.

Darwyn, I haven't played Napoleon- played empires a bit and Rome and Medieval II a lot.

A lot of it will come down to bring more units to bear at the critical point and maintaining a decent fighting formation. That's one of the reasons I really enjoy this game as it requires formations rather than a jumbled melee of units as often happens in rts games. Proper management of your economy so that you have adequate numbers of quality of units is also key.

Might have to pick up Napoleon....

My favorite games have been RTS games (although I don't play computer games much anymore). My favorites (in order): Rise of Nations, Age of Empires 2, and Company of Heroes.
I also used to enjoy playing Medal of Honor online, and Grand Theft Auto 3.
These days, at work on Friday afternoon (happy hour - beer o'clock), we play Wii Bowling.

Any Zelda on the N64 and Gamecube, The original Resident Evil along with Silent Hill. Perfect Dark on the N64 and Fallout 3.

Im surprised at the Final Fantasy RPG votes, they may look fancy but can they beat baldur/elder scrolls or dragon age ? I have never played a FF so im curious.
strategy- civ 4 ( just learning civ 5 now so cant say much about it yet).
RPG - dragon age(but i havent played that many to compare)
tactical- any of the total war series, maybe med II because it has the best fan made mods
FPs - well im no good at these type of games, the only thing I have enjoyed that comes even a little bit close to this genre is Fallout3 (just picked up new vegas) but that is more of an rpg really.

@ava2790. Seriously Civ II has been the greatest of them all. I'm a fan of the whole series, but the gameplay of the second one is the one that to this day I enjoy the most. Civ5 I haven't played to the extent I would wish yet, but Civ4 has actually been the worse of the 5 from my point of view. I would currently rank them 2, 3, 5, 1 and 4.

A little more love from me for Deus Ex - the scene where your female colleague (Anna something?) tries to persuade you to kill the witness/informer/important source (can't remember exactly) and then does it herself if you don't (at which point you realise you might not be working for the good guys after all) was a real turning point in computer games for me. Outstanding.

Also Thrust for the Commodore64 - a beautiful, beautiful bit of programming. Simple but infuriating! There are some clones/emulators around now - worth trying.

Has anyone played Max Payne 2? I loved that one for the sheer entertainment of the storyline, and Half Life 2 for the amazing worlds that they created.

Command & Conquer and Goldeneye are my two favorites.

Civ. the original. i skipped final exams playing that fucking game. Even freeciv, the civ knockoff for linux, is good. And free. yeah, two was a good improvement, and i liked three also. Haven't played four or five.

Holy crap, I had forgotten about Goldeneye!

I have some fond memories of playing that game with friends to the wee hours of the morning.

We used to play Goldeneye until the sun would come up.

I love the 007 series on the XBox and PC. Nightfire was probably one of the better ones with a great story line. I also love the Medal of Honor series.

But my personal favorite is World of Warcraft followed closely by Star Trek Online. There is something about an MMORPG.

Tekken 3 was my favorite fighting game.

Max Payne is great stuff, enjoyed that very much :)
