I just watched Rumble 2012, the debate between Bill O Reilly and Jon Stewart
Question to the Yankees: how is Jon Stewart *not* your President yet? That was not debating, that was art.

Unions screw over passengers and their own company
Delightful of them.

OH GOD
THE INCONVENIENCE

Seriously. This?
Where are the "unions" in the story, anyway?
largeham (149 D)
02 Oct 12 UTC
A) What the hell does this have to do with the union?

B) Yeah, the poor company, actually having to deal with workers
semck83 (229 D(B))
02 Oct 12 UTC
a) Ctrl+F is your friend.

b) The mind boggles at anybody who could think this was OK.
largeham (149 D)
02 Oct 12 UTC
No one said this was okay. All the article mentioned was that the company was fighting with a union over its contracts. A quote from a retired pilot means nothing.
redhouse1938 (429 D)
02 Oct 12 UTC
You guys should really *actually read* the article semck said. The point he mentions is literally *right there*, I can vouch for that :-)
so this is news because theyr'e in a union

i still don't get it
I mean, it seems like a few things got screwed up, and there was a pay dispute happening within twenty feet of it. And then everyone's all AOMG UNINOS
redhouse1938 (429 D)
02 Oct 12 UTC
“This is something that I think we will find out is either as a result of fatigue or inappropriate or unnoticed maintenance,” CBS News aviation safety consultant Mark Rosenker told WCBS 880.

American denied any sort of sabotage by unionized maintenance workers, but retired pilot John Tristani told CBS 2’s Jessica Schneider that this is just too much of a coincidence to be anything but.

“That’s exactly what I expect management to say. It would be detrimental to their flight scheduling if they admitted to passengers that there are possible job actions that could endanger their lives,” Tristani said.
Management always lies, therefore fuck unions?
Putin33 (111 D)
02 Oct 12 UTC
So Semck didn't fact check his pathetic union bashing thread. I guess this is a scandal because rich obnoxious people (read: 95% of airline passengers) had to wait or something. SACRE BLEU.
semck83 (229 D(B))
02 Oct 12 UTC
On the contrary, putin -- I agree with the retired pilot that the probibility of two recently-serviced aircraft both developing the same problem that virtually never occurs is indistinguishable from zero. This not being deliberate is as probable as Soviet elections not being rigged.

As for "rich obnoxious people having to wait for something," I take it you DON'T think it would be an outrage for this to happen, and don't realize that the safety of the passengers was jeopardized by it.
Putin33 (111 D)
02 Oct 12 UTC
I have a hard time listening to people talk about how 'outrages' and 'safety' when the very same people have no problem with police kicking the crap out of working class people for no reason. No, I don't give a shit about airline passengers and their inconveniences. And I find it hard to believe the airline company's management would want to cover up for their hated union. But of course you'll concoct any theory which blames unions for all the world's troubles, so management and unions conspiring together would make sense to you.
Draugnar (0 DX)
02 Oct 12 UTC
OK so everything I'm reading here is grossly misinformed on both sides.

A) The unions have nothing to do with the seat problems. It is the pilots union having the issue with
Draugnar (0 DX)
02 Oct 12 UTC
Damn phone...

Anyhow the pilots aren't going to do anything that endangers the passengers, so everyone can stop that now.

B) Loose seats aren't an inconvenience. If this seats come free during the hih stress of take off or landing or during flight in turbulence, people.coild.get seriously hurt or.killed, Putin. So it isn't a matter of passengers inconvenienced.

C) This is all the fault of the media. They put 1 and 1 together and started the sabotage conspiracy. The two issues are unrelated and you idiots are buying the crap the media is feeding you as if it were some kind of legit conspiracy.
Putin33 (111 D)
02 Oct 12 UTC
Killed from a loose seat? How? By breaking their prissy little faces on the snack tray?
Jamiet99uk (873 D)
03 Oct 12 UTC
There doesn't appear to be any proof that these seats failed due to deliberate action co-ordinated by the trades unions.

The only basis for this claim appears to be the opinion of one former pilot. I was under the impression that the pilot's job was to fly the aircraft, not maintain the seats, so why would a retired pilot be an expert witness anyway?
Draugnar (0 DX)
03 Oct 12 UTC
Putin - You are idiot and am ass. The seats are in groups of two or three. They are coming loose from the floor in the 757s. One comes loose on take off and the people in the site behind ire could.literally be crushed under the weight of the seat and the pasengers strapped into it. The seat belts are part of the seats and so the passengers strapped tobthe seat become a projectile at multiple Gsm during takeoff. Go back to your pseudo science and leave the hard science to the professional scientists who understand momentum, acceleration, mass, and force.
Jamiet99uk (873 D)
03 Oct 12 UTC
Draug, to be fair, I think Putin probably read "loose" as "wobbly" rather than "completely detached from the floor".
Jamiet99uk (873 D)
03 Oct 12 UTC
(Although actually the story in the link does say they were "dislodged" so I think your interpretation that they were totally detached from the floor is the correct one)
Draugnar (0 DX)
03 Oct 12 UTC
And even if they weren't completely detached, the stress of 4 or 5 Gs at take off could.rip them completely off the bolts and send them.flying back.wards at the same 4 Gs of acceleration the plane is producing.forward because they are no longer under the influence of the planes acceleration and there fore moving at approximately the speed they were moving when.they broke free and the plane along witht he still attached seats continues to accelerate.
Jamiet99uk (873 D)
03 Oct 12 UTC
But the important point anyway, Draug, is that you, Putin, and myself all agree that there is no evidence that the unions sabotaged the seats as semck claims.
Putin33 (111 D)
03 Oct 12 UTC
The passengers in the affected row were simply relocated to another seat. The seats weren't zipping around like plane like a projectile any more than luggage under the seats was. THere were absolutely no injuries. So stop with the histrionics.
Putin33 (111 D)
03 Oct 12 UTC
The other important point is nobody cares about spoiled airline passengers.
Jamiet99uk (873 D)
03 Oct 12 UTC
Who says they're spoiled?
Jamiet99uk (873 D)
03 Oct 12 UTC
(The POINT is that the union bashing claims were unsupported by evidence, and yet we're now arguing about an unimportant tangent...)

not the much more dramatic 4 to 5 g's that it feels like to our wussy selves...
Jamiet99uk (873 D)
03 Oct 12 UTC
But again, not actually very important to this debate. The point is whether or not the unions attempted to sabotage the planes.

What is a romantic yet not romantic gift for someone?
OK, so I have my "office wife" who I flirt with (no harm in flirting as long as it stays flirting) and I plan to bring gifts back with me from Canada tomorrow. I got all my wife's stuff, and got stuff for a couple of my male coworkers, but I need something for my flirtatious (and very cute) "office wife." Not too romantic that it goes over the line, but something mroe than a fridge/desk magnet. Any ideas?

I gather the recently deceased unreconstructed Stalinist Eric Hobsawn became a Companion of Honour in 1998, during Blair's period in office. I was wondering, even if by analogy, whether all terrorists eventually get to take tea with the Queen?
